Hostess going out of business. For now, no more Twinkies, Wonder Bread, Merita Butter Bread...

...Hopefully
I see this as similar to K-Mart bankruptcy a few years back. K-Mart re-organized by dumping non-profitable locations and kept the ones that did decent business. An investor (or investment group) will buy the pieces that make sense to move forward....

Kmart did not go into chapter 7 - this is shutdown liquidation. Kmart was just chapter 11 restructuring

Someone can buy the brand and restart it tho.. Which is the most likely outcome...

That's what I meant by "similar".....

An investor (or investment group) will buy the pieces that make sense to move forward....

Similar in that pieces would survive. We agree the bankruptcy is/was clearly different.

The Unions shot themselves in the foot again.

Thank God I live in a Right to Work state.

This^ I am surprised there isnt more talk about why this situation has come to be. In my not so humble pinion unions have helped create the situation this economy is in. In my neck of the woods the unions have essentially killed big manufactureing plants and the jobs that went with it. There was a time in history where unions were needed but that time has passed.

In the case of the Hostess situation the company could no longer operate in this economy with the obligations it needed to meet. They needed the unions to make concessions. Union said "no way"......well guess what, 18,500 people are now without jobs. Smart move idiots!

The cakes you so love will be back in no time, there is money to be made. Hostess will license another company to make them. So now the the powers to be can just liqudate the company, write off thier losses and sit back and collect royalties. Wont have to worry about ungrateful unions and pensions and Obama healthcare etc. Oh how I wish I lived in a "right to work" state.

I would like to take this thread one step further.....tread on thin ice as far as the rules are concerned on these blue pages ( mods feel free to delete if deemed nesscesary). with the impending change in our healthcare system and the new Obamacare laws, our economy dosnt look to get better.....in fact IMO will deteiorate. Unemployment will rise dramatically. I wonder what this will mean to WDW and Disney and how they will proceed with any new exspansion? l really dont see any additions in near future. I know what the rumors are, but with anything like this it is always in flux. They always are looking at projections and these laws certianally affect Disney's bottom line. With that many employees these new healthcare laws will effect thier bottom line tremendously. This is money they can not recieve any return on. With employee cost going up and what I think will be a continued decline in attendence it dosnt bode well for the parks in the near future......just sayin'

Yeah the brands must continue. All the imitators of Hostess just blow. At least for now no more low fat Twinkies to take up valuable shelf space.
The Little Debbie cupcakes are a freaking amazingly good treat. SO much better than the Hostess version was.

It maybe just regional but here we have Tastycakes......Anybody in the Mid Atlantic will know of these little morsals of heaven. Although like most they have changed over the years. I think they all removed the saturated fats in most foods.....what makes them so darn good....LOL.

I have to say that Hostess Cup Cakes were not my favorite. They always seemed stale. But I loved the Big Wheels, a/k/a Ding Dongs. And while I do like Little Debbie cakes (which seem lighter and airier than Hostess), the chocolate icing in Hostess always seemed more "real" tasting than Little Debbie's version. It was like Coca-Cola and store-brand to me, on the chocolate frosting. Hostess was the definitive statement, and everyone else was an also-ran.

tastycake = superior taste to Hostess... but Hostess certainly had some niche products that were just great. I generally don't like most of the Little Debbie knockoffs compared to other variants of the same treat. I think it's their icing... dunno

Who shot Twinkie the Kid? The Union.

Ehhh, not really. The strike might have been the final straw, but Hostess had much bigger problems than what they were paying their workforce. The union could have reduced wages to minimum wage with no benefits and it might have bought Hostess another year or two.

Hostess is all about how you buy them. Cupcakes need to be bought in the 2-packs, not by the box. And always go for the ones on the back of the shelf, as those are the freshest. Twinkies doesn't matter either way since those are good for like 5,000 years. The Donettes are better by the package and bag. By the box, they tend to be a bit stale. Ding Dongs tend to be better by the box, as the 2 packs always tend to fall apart.

Why the hell do I know this?

We do not have Tastykakes or TastyCakes in my area but they "look" promising. Over the years were the portion on snack sizes reduced or did I just get bigger?
