Horizons....

Future World is kind of a poor name for it. Other than Horizons, and a few scenes in Spaceship Earth and WoM, it was never really about the future. Its a great thematic idea, and I think the atmosphere tries to reflect it, I just don't think the ideology of the rides every followed through on it. Epcot as a whole is more a celebration of Earth, humanity, and ingenuity. If you look at it that way, I think all the pavilions really tie in nicely.

If you think that's a can of worms, let's bring up TOMORROWLAND! :ROFLOL:

It was more about "where we've been, where we are, and where we are going" than it was about the "future".

Where We Are Going World just doesn't have a ring to it. :p

When it opened, it was very much about where we are going. Slowly it has evolved into...... something undefinable. Hence why Experimental Protocol Community of Tomorrow was just changed to the random made up word: Epcot.

Future World made sense in light of the original set of pavilions/attractions. Every pavilion featured a lengthy "History of ..." component and then typically ended with a "Here's where the future of this topic is going ..." presentation. The History portions were lavish and meant to stand the test of time (as typically, history doesn't change). The Future portions were meant to be updated repeatedly and often. The problem is that management never understood this basic concept and made no effort to ever update the Future portions. And when it came to spending money, they wasted it on the removing the "expensive" Historical portions (World of Motion, JII) - that were never designed to be changed easily.

I cannot say it any clearer than this ... the biggest FUBAR in the history of WDW/TDO/WDI is how they have mangled Future World since the opening of Horizons. Just an epic dismantling of everything that made it's opening day presentation wonderful.

I'll never forget this part of the Horizons script. We got stuck on it for almost 2 hours, and heard this over and over again. I think I was brainwashed:

"The DNA chain - life's molecular blueprint. Decoding its secrets is leading us to dramatically improved health.

The sun. Today we're learning ways to harness its limitless energy.

Colonies in space. Habitats where people live and work. This is no distant dream, we're at the threshold now.

A computerized view of earth - landsat photography providing vital data on agriculture, resources, and ecological concerns.

The cityscape. A living tribute to our richest resource - people.

Here's a new kind of cityscape - the microprocessor. An entire computer on a tiny silicon chip.

Crystals. Inspired by nature, now engineered by man for an ever growing role in micro-electronics.

The world of liquid space. Oceans of minerals and food ready to fuel tomorrow's needs."

Say, we're just in time for the matinee!

Just goes to show that it needed to be updated.

New stuff in 1983, not so much in 1999 when the ride closed. :ROFLOL:

It was a great ride and I will always miss it. They took the ride for granted. They could have done so many things with a futuristic themed attraction. At the same time extended space travel is also the future. I miss the ride greatly and dont like the way the planned Mission Space. What I miss the most is the looks and of the old building and the landscapes around it.

Thanks for this. This script is a great reminder of what EPCOT used to be about...teaching, and learning about where we were, are and are going, as others have alluded to. The EPCOT attractions should be returned to this kind of interesting, thought-provoking learning environment and less about Government Motors sponsored Test Track with a showroom of cars at the end.

im not saying this to troll or anything:

but i think MS is a HUUUUUUGGGGE improvement from Horizons. Future World is supposed to be about the FUTURE! its supposed to have the most technically advanced rides.

i just think the "traditionalists", as i call them, are holding WDW back. if we keep holding on to these...dare i say...boring rides like Horizon, we wont ever come close to being compared to other Disney Parks. compare any of our original dark rides to the new ones in TDL or HKDL. They blow us out of the park! (no pun intended)

i dont mean to hate on Horizons, im just saying that MS was an improvement. you cant say things like "we need more E-tickets to kill Potter" and then hope they dont change anything

I don't think it's so much that Disney "traditionalists" don't wish to see their precious childhood attractions removed as much as they want to see the replacements actually be a tremendous improvement over their predecessors.

For quite a few people (myself including) Mission:Space simply was not much of an improvement. I think it was an idea that looked great on paper, and if WDI had been able to build the entire pavillion as they had initially designed it it may be been better...but the attraction itself for those of us that do not enjoy it is simply boring!

I'm all about bringing in new advancements to the parks! I hope daily a press release will surface noting the "next big thing" coming to WDW...but I want to see these advancements accompanied by the Disney Magic that has existed in past generations of attractions. Massion:Space lacks that magic.

To me M:S can be summed up as the following:

Get in a phone booth with three other people

Get spun around at violent speeds

Watch video game in front of you

Vomit if neccesary.
Sort of like what happens to actual astronauts when they train to go into space....Which is what I thought the attraction was all about.

Well yes...but I'm in the camp that MAYBE thar experience doesn't exactly translate very well into a themepark attraction.

Listen, I know there are people that enjoy it. I'm not one of them. I love thrill rides but I never found M:S thrilling...just claustrophobic and uncomfortable. And I'm not a a big guy (5'6" 160lbs).

To each his own...I just think WDI could've done better. Personally.

You can say that about almost anything but I think that WDI did a pretty good job with M:S. They wanted to create a realistic simulation for launch training and they did that very well. They also made it flexible enough to be able to be modified on the fly for a less thrilling experience. The exit queue could really use some sprucing up but aside from that I think it is a great attraction.

Like I said, to each his own. For me it just doesn't feel like "Disney". I know that's a term we all like to throw around. This is just one of those instances for me.

Absolutely. We each are entitled to like and dislike an attraction for whatever reason we chose. What will usually gets under my skin is the short slightness of some (not you) who will state that an attraction sucks and should be ripped out and replaced simply because they do not like it. The Speedway in TL and Idol at the studios is a great example of attractions that get this treatment.

I never got a chance to experience horizons(we have been to WDW 5 times since 2004) ,but through these posts/threads I can see that there is quite the fan base.

There are some things that are gone/changed that I miss also. BUt, the fact of the matter is that Horizons os GONE. And more than likely staying that way, I can appreciate all the clamor to bring it back, but will it make a difference? I say no.
Horizons is (probably) gone forever.

I'm not being hard to handle ,but can anyone here name 1 time where Disney brought back an attraction because we all complained about it being gone??

Seriously.

The one example that most will point to is Figment was put back into JII after the first refurb.

Well the only thing that comes to mind is Captain EO. Although I doubt it was brought back due to fan complaints...rather for a quick money grab.
