Hong Kong Disneyland - Phase II Discussion and New Contruction Photos

Hi Everyone.

This thread is to discuss news, rumors, etc. regarding the near-term expansion of the HKDL.

I'm hoping someone can help me find a siteplan I recently saw on this forum (or somewhere on the Web). It was the official HKDL park layout (the one that shows the whole property), but then someone had used Photoshop to add in their own Phase II attractions (such as the PotC Flume, Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain, etc.). It was a pretty cool illustration.

The other Phase II item I'm looking for is an article that quoted Robert Iger as saying something like: "We have extensive Phase II attractions waiting in the wings, but we're going to see how the park does before we give them the green light."

Right now the park is looking small, but it is also looking beautifully crafted. I'm especially excited about Tomorrowland, which looks to be a more complete version of the Magic Kingdom's sci-fi spaceport theme - which I think is the best version of TL.

Also here is a site in Japanese that features great photos of HKDL construction taken from a boat just offshore: http://www.gun149.com/~dmagic/hkdl/

Remember that DLP also had phase 2 attractions (and an entire park) waiting in the wings and they never saw the light of day! Geyser Mountain, Jungle Jeep, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Discovery Mountain, Disney-MGM Europe...

The lack of phase 1 attractions is worrying; if the bad press continues this can only put a dampener on visitor numbers, stalling any phase 2 plans.

I think Phase II is going to be very cool for Hong Kong. The park is amazing and full of detail as it is from the concept art, and these gardens are supposed to be SPECTACULAR! BTW, what is Hong Kong's fireworks show going to be?

Rumored Phase II Attractions-

PotC (with Splash flume)
Jungle themed Haunted Mansion
IASW
more FL dark rides
and more, but none i can think of right now

Has anyone heard any rumors about Toontown or Frontierland?

Translation, anyone? What is more likely to prompt green lights - success or failure or something in between?

You can look at it two ways. If it's a success you want to give those willing guests a reason to return. If it's a failure then you need to build more attractions to give them more value for their money.

Or - if it's a success there's no need to panic and build new attractions. If it's a failure, why throw good money after bad?

I hope the former is true.

Translation: If the park is wildly successful in its first 6-9 months then Phase II will be put on fast forward. If the park does not meet attendance expectations in Year 1, then Phase II will be stalled as the Accountanteers try to stem the bleeding.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Look at MGM and Disneyland Paris as two examples. MGM opened as a small, half-day park with one ride (excluding the tour) and yet it enjoyed massive and sustained popularity from the outset. The Company scrambled to add rides, shows, and parking spaces – and all this without a pre-planned Phase II. HKDL has already prepared its Phase II plan (and they allotted a lot of clear land between the Railroad and the Berm) that could be put into action before the park even opens (look at Autopia, Storybook Theater, Tarzan Rocks all already underway).

I believe this park will be a resounding success from the outset. The park has too few rides, yes, but what it does have looks good and the themeing of the lands and the hotels looks superb. More importantly, China is primed and ready to embrace a Disney themepark. Just as Japan’s economic explosion and fascination with American pop culture made Tokyo Disneyland the hit of the 1980s, China’s burgeoning economy means that an enormous new middle class (200 million) will be able to afford a trip to Disneyland and may even see it as a status symbol.

If this park is a huge success, the Imagineers will have a nice few decades ahead of them as Disney expands HKDL and sets its eyes on Shanghai and India.

I wonder. Are all the castmembers at Hong Kong Disney going to be paid the same? If not, I am going to sue China because they claim they are a communist government and it would mean they are lieing.

Wow, the only major change I see is that the docks are fully constructed from that japanese website. You can see theatre in the wild constructed too. It looks like allot of the attractions in HKDL are now being constructed or nearly completed for phase 1, I suspect Disney HK has not given the full list of attractions yet, we won't know the full list until the Sept 12 date rolls nearby. There's still that plot of land for Phase 2 which hasn't seen the light of day been built just lots of empty land. I'm quite sure Disney will build a berm to hide onlookers from ferry boats to see what's been constructed for Phase 2.

Jim Hill has recently added Peter Pan to the list. Claiming that a foundation is already set for it.

That would be clever forward thinking. I beleive this was also the case for the ToT at the Walt Disney Studios - Paris. Certainly the rest rooms in the area are themed to how the ToT will be.

I just hope that HKDL's Phase 2 get's built faster than WDSP's ToT!
