MINDBOGGLING.....

...this government Agency needs to be gutted from the top to the bottom...what a waste of time and money....overpaid, worthless paper shufflers...it's a national embarrassment!

...one of those smart bombs needs to be dropped down the chimney of the INS with a note saying that this is for aiding and abetting the enemy.

Tear it all down from top to bottom, everything excluding the Constitution and start over. The FBI, INS....these guys have to scury through way too much red tape. They should be able to hunt down who they need to and get their on the next boat outta here!

I heard about this last night but not with all the details. After reading the article, it sounds like a simple matter of the paperwork traveling through the office and getting there late. It could have come out of some sort of backlogged automated system. Mighty embarrassing for our country just the same but not the terrible example of how unsafe things are. The blurb that I got on it failed to mention that the visas had been approved months prior to 9/11.

Dont get me started on INS...2 reasons::

1.) As I wasnt born in this country, I had to deal with them PERSONALLY when I was much younger...and even in the 80s I would complain about how they ran things...

2.) I live in south florida..where INS is HORRIBLE. A joke? it is PAST the point of being a joke. They are letting ANYONE into this country, even if they got here illegally...that to me is WRONG.

Now..I am going to say this and in NO way do I intend it to sound racist..buuut...

When I came to this country, I made SURE I learned the English Language...not only for my own good..but out of RESPECT for the country in which I was moving to. I can not tell you how many times down here in South Florida I come across people who dont speak a WORD of english..and are PROUD of it. Thanks to the help of some of my bi-langual buddies, I have heard about how the "non english" speakers pride themselves on their ignorance of learning the native language of the country, and half of them also boast on how they got here "on non legal terms"....

I feel that in order to get your US citizenship..you NEED to speak english...I feel that I made the effort, because I was PROUD to be here. I dont think its right that people who were born in this country, who only speak english, should have to adapt because someone who came here on a raft decides that they shoudlnt have to learn the language of the place they ran to...

Sorry..just ranting..and as I said..i mean no offence to anyone..so sorry in advance if that ruffled anyones feathers...

I suppose you would be speaking of the Cuban defectors and I totally agree with you. I have several friends that are Cuban and they are wonderful people. To classify them all in a group would be like doing the same with caucasians or any other race which is wrong because we are all individuals. I also don't think it's wrong to be proud of your heritage or where you are from but when you leave where you are from because you can't stand the quality of life there and another country lets you in, I don't think it's right to give that country the big F-U and act like your too good to be respectful of their language, beliefs or legal system. I don't want to get all controversial here but when the whole Illian thing was going on there were a lot of people from Cuba or of Cuban decent that were in an uproar about the way our country was handling everything... I don't know. I agree with freedom of speech but I don't understand how a person can walk down a street waving the flag of a country that they abandoned and yell nasty things about the country that gave they asylum... Closer to the original subject, not learning English because you are older or because you are so far behind in general education that you don't have the most eloquent use of your first language is one thing, but refusing to out of some sort of principal? That I don't go along with.

I am friends with many cubans, and all the ones I know are great people..who also share my opion on the matter. They got her legally and did things the right way, learned english, and got jobs..pay taxes..etc...they are proud of where they are from..but they are also proud of being American..and they proove it. It bothers them when they see a few of their fellow cubans who have NO respect for where they are living.

The Elian issue..oy...unless you were from south florida..I dont really think you saw/heard all the real facts. First off..the area he was in is a pretty low class area..and is notorious for its high population of "illegals" (some deny that..but thats what I have heard). The majority of the people who were "fighting" for Elian were in fact NOT legal US citizens, and thus why they had to stir up media and lowball with demonstrations...instead of trying to go thru the courts. A lot of what was said were LIES (obviously the immigration office didnt come by and destory EVERY ROOM in the house), and it really saddened us here in south florida to see how many of these people..living in our state..are so against america.

But thats a whooooooooooole other topic..Im glad to see that im not alone in this tho..I was afraid my view on the issue would be seen as me being very hatefull..and I agree with you Mr.P..elderly who cant learn because of their inabilities are excusable..but I was referring to people my age or younger who just plain REFUSE out of their convienience...

Now, I totally agree with you, and admire you for having the guts to tell it like it is. I admire your feelings about the need to learn the language etc. And it's not just the Cubans. We have so many Vietnamese who came here in the '70's and still don't know the language. They came here as children and should have learned it. Folks who came here in their 20's and 30's should know it by now too. And what kills me more than anything are the people I run into who dis our country, who don't follow our customs, and make it no secret that they can't wait to go back to their country; after we finish educating them..............:(
