An insider was quoted saying that Chapek didn't expect the ScarJo situation to, "blow up in his face." And that Iger has a better and broader background that knows how to work with talent. In any case, it's wild that Disney wouldn't respond to ScarJo's reps when they wanted to renegotiate her contract. You can't just point and cry, "We're in a pandemic!" The film was already delayed - the thought to change distribution should have been discussed. Now a domino effect is happening.
This happening to an actress that was the only woman lead in the group of the Avengers, and the character having a history in fighting for equal representation in the MCU (so much so that she doesn't get her solo film until
after having her character killed off,) looks pretty bad.
This is an older
article and is from before the lawsuit, but I find it to be helpful in contextualizing a lot of what's going on within the company.
This. The timing was
so suspect. Iger claims that he had no idea COVID was going to be so bad, but considering his connections, the behaviors from major corporate heads shortly before things began shutting down, and the swath of information that was already in the news, I've always felt like Chapek was thrown under the bus. IMHO, Iger only came back because people started calling him out on it - not to help the company, but to protect his reputation (and then benefit from it by "swooping in" and rescuing the sinking ship.)
