Rumor Higher Speed Rail from MCO to Disney World

That's what the Brightline man said (actually 5 yrs for start of service.)

They'd already said construction on the Tampa extension wouldn't start until after Orlando service commenced. Some of us hoped the Disney segment might be expedited, but apparently not.
This whole thing is a joke. Some folks thought Disney stopping DME had something to do with the Brightline but with timelines like this, obviously not.

I will reiterate, folks do not need to worry; there will be the equivalent to what we had with DME, it’s just that Disney doesn’t want to pay for it anymore. The cost will be shifted back to the guest like it was before DME.

Thanks Disney for acting “in response to guest demands” 😡

How do kids that attend these schools know not to enter the highway?
Unfortunately, they may not. SunRail and Brightline have had to deal with a lot of negative press because things don’t end well for people walking on or stopping on the tracks. It seems there is somehow a sizable contingent of Floridians who think walking and stopping on train tracks is a perfectly safe activity.

Magical express was never out of the goodness of their hearts. It’s creation and it’s continued operation we’re always for Disney’s financial benefit. Now the dynamics in the market have shifted and it’s no longer financially beneficial for them. It was always about Disney’s money.

Latest presentation to CFX Board has new detailed maps of proposed alignments.
  • It would leave the SunRail ROW just south of Meadow Woods station, and cut west to the Turnpike, then join SR-417 at the Turnpike interchange.
  • This map shows the line just north of the 417. Whether that's the actual location, or shown that way just for legibility, I don't know.
  • Approach to Disney has not been nailed down. It's shown as anywhere between World Center Dr. on the north, and about halfway down to Osceola Pkwy. on the south.
  • The map seems to show the DS terminus as somewhere west of BVD; i.e., the line not crossing BVD.
  • Anticipated construction start: Q2 2023
  • Anticipated revenue service first segment (including SunRail to Airport): Q3-Q4 2026
The slides are part of a large agenda packet. I pulled them out and saved them to Google Drive, which I think everyone should be able to access here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1O64qOTv2n3MeaeWV47sWKEaU359eeqfb/view?usp=sharing

If that doesn't work, the full file is here, with the slides starting at page 1145: https://www.cfxway.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2021-03-11-Agenda-with-attachmentsv1-2.pdf

Florida has gotten a bad rap but people do actually walk near or on train tracks and some meet a fatal end. One will know when one sees makeshift crosses by the side of the tracks.

Ha, agreed, it was always about Disney’s money! Maybe Mears wanted more of Disney’s money, maybe part of the DME deal with Disney was Disney had to pay for fuel. We all know fuel prices are going to skyrocket going forward.

I absolutely know Disney does nothing out of the goodness of their heart. Folks will continue to get to WDW anyway they can..

It's shocking how bad it is in Florida. The local passenger trains hit at least one person a month at least it seems. Some from walking on the tracks (for whatever reason), trying to beat the train (for whatever reason), or going around gates (for. whatever. reason).

It's obvious where my feelings lie on that.

Been looking forward to an official update. Thanks!
Agreed. Interesting how it's in the same area as the TDO building. TDO is square in the middle of it.

It wasn’t so much that the cost of DME was increasing but more that the benefit for them was eroding.

Here's the video record of the CFX board meeting with the Brightline presentation:
The Brightline presentation starts at 6:00.

The Brightline VP stated quite strongly that they are intercity rail, not local rail, that they will have hourly service, and that they are not suited for local transit. He said that one proposal cannot meet all the transportation needs of the community. Sounds like Brightline is not interested in shuttling people between MCO & WDW.

The route along SR-417 is the "preferred alignment," but the alternate alignment along SR-528 has not been completely ruled out, and is still being pushed by one of the CFX Board members. Brightline's estimate is that the 528 alignment would be double the cost of the 417 alignment, a difference of more than $1 billion. He said they would require a source of outside (government) funding to make it viable.

The segment to Disney is in the 15-30% design phase, and will be built next (if all approvals are obtained), with service expected in the latter half of 2026, as stated earlier. The rest of the route to Tampa is still in the early design stage, and will not be in service until at least 2028 or 2029.

This is kind of what I expected all along.

They'll happily take people's money who want to use the train for that, but the service won't really be geared for it and they're not going to go out of their way to make it easier for people to do so.

Nope. They ARE interested in a stop at Disney between orlando and Tampa. It was their idea to repitch this plan.

They are not interested in becoming local transit for orlando with stops at Disney / OCCC / and possibly Univeral.
