Trip Report Hey Elsa...the cold really bothers the rest of us! A Christmas Time Report

Hello and Welcome!

For those who of you didn't join in on my Pre-Trip Report (and why the heck not may I ask!!!), thanks for joining in on my Trip Report.

I'm Michelle and I am your typical Disney Nut; born and raised to bleed Disney!

1520446700993.png

It's safe to say that I am more than a bit into and obsessed with all things Disney, but I can't see anyone reading this on here thinking that's a problem. My first trip to Disney World (or as I like to refer to it as "home"), was before I was 1 years old. In 1993 my family became DVC members at Old Key West and there began the start of my obsession.

My husband Ryan, on the other hand....not so much. I love him dearly (obviously), but I cannot fathom HOW he isn't as "into Disney" as I am; some peoples children **shakes head**. I will give him credit though, he tolerates and supports my obsession. For someone who "doesn't love Disney"...he sure has been on a lot of trips AND has even helped add visiting other Disney Parks into our "other travel" plans; yes, it shames me to say that I travel to other places than just the Disney Parks...I'd like to stay married LOL.

1520447017618.png

We recently (and by recently I mean January) returned from our most recent and (in my opinion) too short of a trip to Disney World. Although it was too short, I was so incredibly blessed to have had the chance to go AND to go during Christmas and New Years. Christmas happens to be my favorite time of the year, so I am thankful Ryan was willing to give up some family time and heard to warm and sunny Florida with me. Spoiler alert....it was cold LOL. Oh well, if I have to be cold (but still warmer than home in Toronto at the time), theres no place I'd rather be!

I am (secretly) working on plans to return home, but until I can make them more concrete and to deal with my Disney blues, I thought I'd share my last trip with you fine folks!

Let's get started with some details!

Who: Myself and my loving, amazing husband Ryan!

1520447360820.png

Where: Disney's Old Key West (original DVC home) and Cabana Bay when we moved over to the dark side, more commonly known as Universal Studios.

1520447531058.png

1520447581413.png

When: Tuesday December 26, 2017 - Thursday January 4, 2018

Why: Well....I guess the RIGHT answer is because we wanted to get out of the cold and be there during my favorite time of the year. The REAL answer is because (see picture below!) I cried, whined and threw a temper tantrum last Christmas when I was at home in my Disney PJ's, in my Mickey Santa Hat, drinking mimosa's out of my Disney Champagne glass while watching the Disney Christmas Parade at home and Ryan just didn't want to deal with me so he agreed to this trip LOL. AND WHY NOT GO TO DISNEY WHEN GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY!

Without further delay....let's get this TR started!

We now had no plans, so we slowly strolled through the park taking in the nighttime festivities. AND took the opportunity to take in the details and get some photos! Remember....this trip was supposed to be a much slower pace than normal.

And of course took advantage of some photopass photographers around the park!

And just like that, our day at Hollywood Studios was over.

We made our way back to the bus stop and before we knew it we were crawling into bed to dream of the awesomeness to come tomorrow!

Today's count:
13.30 km
16,487 steps

When is your next trip booked?? We just booked the Labor Day long weekend in September; it'll be a VERY short trip, but we've got Halloween tickets!!
Leaving next Tuesday :D It cannot come soon enough! I feel like I have a billion things to do between now and then though. We are going in October too for fall break and will probably get MNSSHP tickets! I love that event <3

Day 3 - Thursday December 28, 2018 - An Early Morning and Wild Evening

We were thankful for the semi-early evening we had the day before when the alarm went off at 6 am. We had an early morning planned at EPCOT and there was no time to sleep in today!

original.gif

We got up to do the normal morning things, but today we didn't need to eat breakfast as we were heading to EPCOT this early because we had breakfast reservations at Garden Grill and wanted the chance to rope drop a few attractions before the crowds came pouring in.

We drove over to EPCOT and skipped on over to The Land for a ride on Soarin'.

IMG_3703.jpg

This was the first time we had a chance to ride the new version and we both enjoyed the update. However (and don't shoot me!), we really aren't big Soarin' fans - we'd prefer to use the tiered FP+ for Test Track!

We still had enough time before our reservation, so we drove deep into the big blue sea with Nemo an some friends.

IMG_3712.jpg

IMG_3710.jpg

It was quiet at this time in the morning, so we were able to fit in a few more things before our 8:50 am reservation.

We then headed over to Starbucks for Ryan to grab a coffee. Then back over to The Land to check out the greenhouses on a boat tour through Living with the Land.

After our ride, it was finally time for our visit with Mickey and the gang looking so cute in their farming gear!

We checked in a few minutes before our 8:50 am reservation and were seated almost right away. We got a table for four (we were a party of two) in the top section.

Our waitress was really sweet and attentive and before we knew it we had both food filling our bellies and friends visiting!

DSC_3285.jpg

DSC_3286.jpg

DSC_3284.jpg

Food was really good and our server was sure to come by multiple times to see if we wanted more of anything - we really didn't need more of anything seeing how the initial serving could easily have fed a family of four! Those cinnamon buns were soooo delicious - warm and gooey!

We would highly recommend breakfast at Garden Grill, it's officially made it onto our list of favourite buffet breakfast locations.

Full as all could be, we headed over to MouseGears as I had some ears to purchase! While packing for this trip, I made the mistake of leaving my classic Minnie ears on the floor and one of my cats decided that meant I had donated them to them as their new scratching post. Needless to say, they were ruined!

So over to MoseGears we went!

With new ears on my head, there was only one thing to do...stop for some photos at an infamous wall!

And of course a few more photos on our way out of the park.

And just like that, our early morning at EPCOT was complete. We made our way back to the parking lot and headed over to Animal Kingdom for the remainder of the day.

As we approached Animal Kingdom we could tell it was going to be extremely busy. The line to get into the parking lot extended far outside of the entrance gates. It took close to 40 minutes to make it into the parking lot. In fact the line was so long, my navigator found a way to catch a little shut eye to power up for the rest of the day.

We were finally able to get into the parking lot and park, but the line for the tram to the front of the park was massive so we decided it would be quicker (and healthier for us!) to walk to the front instead.

Getting into the park was just as busy as the parking lot. We knew now that we weren't going to be able to do much outside of our FastPasses here today.

We headed straight over to our first FP+ of the day, a 10:35 - 11:35 window for Expedition Everest.

First we passed by the playing monkeys!

DSC_3306.jpg

Finally made our way through the crowds to our first ride at Animal Kingdom, Expedition Everest.

I love the detail seen in all things Disney, but this area still blows me away!

After dancing with Yeti, we headed over to our next FastPass+, an 11:35 - 12:35 pm for Dinosaur. I LOVE this ride. Of course, there was time for a few photos before our time travel.

Once we made it back to the year 2017, we ran over to Finding Nemo as it was already 11:55 am and we were really trying to make the 12 noon show. Thankfully, we arrived JUST as they were closing the door and we were able to find ourselves a pair of seats on the far left side of the theatre.

DSC_3321.jpg

DSC_3328.jpg

DSC_3333.jpg

We then tried to push our luck to make the 1 pm showing of Festival of the Lion King show.

DSC_3341.jpg

We waited in the standby line for roughly 10 minutes walking closer and closer to the entrance. Sadly, they cut the line off at the couple right in front of us, so we weren't able to get into this showing - and unfortunately we weren't able to get back, so didn't get to experience this amazing show on this trip :banghead::cry:

From here we decided it was time to head towards Pandora, something totally new to us.

DSC_3344.jpg

As we approached Pandora, we were shocked to see a line up which ended almost at the Festival of the Lion King show. We asked someone in line if this was to get into Pandora and they let us know that they are actually in line for Flight of Passage. WHAT THE HECK. We by passed the line because we had a FP+ for just a little bit later, but couldn't believe how long this line was.

Once we finally made it into the land, we could not believe how incredibly beautiful, amazing and crowded the area was. We quickly tried to find our way around and asked a cast member where FOP was so we knew where abouts we'd have to head once our FP became available. That's when the CM pointed us in the right directly, but also advised where the start of the standby line was.....which had a 4 hours wait!!!!!! o_O 4 HOURS.....4 HOURS...WTH? We had never been so thankful for a FP in our lives.

We spent the next hours or so just wandering around taking in all the astounding sights. Fair warning...Pandora photo overload - I am actually quite impressed with how the majority of these photos turned out. Just goes to show you, practice really does make perfect (not that our photos are anywhere near perfect, but they were getting better each day!)

We also decided to stop for some of the Pandora offerings. First up was a Night Blossom for me and a green beer for Ryan. We also decided to split one order of the cheeseburger pods that we had heard so much about.

DSC_3372.jpg

DSC_3373.jpg

Ryan enjoyed the green beer, but the clear winner was the Night Blossom. IT.WAS.SO.FREAKING.GOOD!!! We liked the cheeseburger pods, but thought they needed more filling than the order we got had - we felt there was a lot more "pod" and a lot less "cheeseburger". While we ate, I also took another dose of Dramamine - if I haven't said it before, I suffer with sever motion sickness, to the point that I get car sick if I'm not the driver, but Dramamine is a magic pill for me!

It was finally time for our 1:40 - 2:40 pm FP+ for Flight of Passage. We felt very VIP walking past the 4 hour line up - can I just remind you HOW ridiculous a 4 hours line up is!!!!!!

We REALLY enjoyed FOP. SUCH a good ride...worth 4 hours in line, probably not, but most definitely worth a ride. Get your FP's people! My glasses flew off half was through the ride, but thankfully I was able to grab them mid-air. Do they offer children sized glasses - I know I have a smaller than average head, but kids must have smaller heads so this must be a problem for them IF they don't offer them. If they do, please let me know and I will be sure to get some next trip! The ride also made me feel a bit queasy, which I wasn't too surprised with. But it also made Ryan feel a little sick, which never happens on rides

When we got off of the ride, we noticed that the standby line had increased to a 4.50 hour line! SAY WHAT. We walked over to Navi River Journey, but it has a 2.50 hour line up and we just weren't willing to wait in that kind of line. We checked the Disney Experience App and everything had really long lines - at this time It's Tough to be a Bug had a 65 minute wait. So we decided to grab whatever FP+ were available, which ended up being for It's Tough to be a Bug in just over an hours time.

When we were there, there were no kids sizes. I think Lennon just went without and Ella held hers on with one hand.

Oh man, I feel like without the glasses you'd miss a lot of the experience. Probably not to much of a concern at Lennon's age (I'm so proud that she experienced this ride as I know she sometimes scares herself out of rides). Hopefully they will take the feedback and make child size glasses...everyone should be able to experience the full experience. Next time i'll just be prepared to hold them instead of worrying if they don't have them still.

Appreciating your Pandora picture overload :inlove:

haha thanks! Glad it wasn't too much...theres just SO much to take photos of and so many I wanted to share.

We had some time to kill before our next FP+, but the standby lines for everything were massive. We ended up taking a few photopass photos in Pandora before leaving the area.

At some point during our exploration we stopped in at Starbucks for Ryan to get a coffee - this is one of the nicest Starbucks locations on property if you ask me. We also sat in on our FP for It's Tough to be a Bug. I always enjoy the reactions of those who are first time experiencers!

IMG_3722.jpg

By now it was nearly 4:30 pm and we had a 5:00 pm dinner reservation at Tiffins, a now location for us. Since lines were still ridiculously long and there were no FP+'s available, we knew we wouldn't be able to get onto anything before our reservation so we slowly made our way over to Tiffins in hopes we could check in early and possibly be seated early.

We were quite excited for our dinner as we had read so many great reviews on these boards, including visits from @Doc Disney ! Sadly, we didn't have the same experience .

Admittedly we checked in for our 5:00 pm dining reservation early, around 4:30 pm. The hostess who helped us did warn us that it was going to be a busy night so it was not likely we would be able to be seated early. We didn't have a problem with this as we were the ones who were early. She led us to a seating area inside and asked us to wait there until our names were called.

By now the weather had changed quite drastically and we needed to change into pants.

Then it was 5:00....then 5:10....then 5:20.....then at 5:27 I was about to go up to the check in desk to ask about our reservation which was for 27 minutes ago, but as I was walking up they called my name. Honestly, I think they forgot about us LOL :banghead: because tons of people were being led in in front of our eyes.

My first impressions were that this place was beautifully designed - the check in area had this beautiful carved map on the wall, a ton of details everywhere. We were led to our table in one of the rooms towards the back of the restaurant, I think it was the Trek Gallery - we were sat at a table for two beside a booth that had this beautiful coloured flag piece of art. As we entered, we were really disappointed to see that the restaurant was basically empty, so were weren't sure why we couldn't have been sat early OR why we were seated nearly 30 minutes past our reservation time . Oh well, we were here now.

Now if any of you have read any of my previous PTRs or TRs, you know I am not an "adventurous" eater at all - I've described my tastes similar to those of a 5 year old LOL (chicken fingers, pizza, mashed potatoes....etc.), so I knew in advance that this restaurant was not going to be my favourite, but I really wanted to give it a try AND Ryan is the complete opposite eater. He will try anything once and trying new and "exotic" foods is part of the deal in selling Disney trips to him LOL ;)

For drinks, Ryan decided to go with the Exploration Beer Flight ($10) - First Magnitude Wakulla Hefeweizen, Kungaloosh Spiced Excursion Alex and Old Elephant Foot IPA. These were all new to him. I decided to go with a glass of wine. Here was the first "odd encounter" with our server - you'll see this is a reoccurring theme throughout our service. I wasn't familiar with any of the wines listed, so I asked him if he could suggest a red for me. He gave me a very grumpy and almost dismissive "I don't drink red" response. I asked if there was anything that seemed to be an extremely popular choice and again a rude response of "I don't know, everyone is different". Finally I was able to get a recommendation from him, which was for the Cabernet Concha y Toro from Chile ($13). It was only okay.

I also asked for two glasses of water at the time we ordered our drinks.

IMG_3725.jpg

We also decided to get the Bread Service ($10) as an appetizer - Tadka, Smoked Baba Ghanoush, Blatjang. We really enjoyed the one from Sanaa on our last visit. This was only okay in both Ryan and my books...the one from Sanaa BLOW THIS ONE OUT OF THE WATER.

IMG_3730.jpg

After the bread service was dropped off, we placed our orders for our meals.

While we ate we heard an odd conversation between our server and the couple sat next to us. The woman next to me had a similar "wine suggestion" experience to what I had, but the strangest part was when she placed her food order. She ordered something that came with sweet potato grits as the side. She asked to substitute that with pretty much anything as she explained she didn't like sweet potato or grits. The server bluntly told her "No, that's what it comes with". The woman looked shocked at his response and again explained that she wouldn't like it, but the server insisted "they are good, you will like it". The woman accepted this answer, let out a huge sigh and eye roll as the waiter walked away.

giphy.gif

Never in my life had I heard such a rude response to a guest request when at Disney. I have also never heard of a server refusing to let a guest make substitutions to their meal. I myself had a fully customized meal at California Grill after working directly with our server to ensure I had a meal that I would enjoy. I was SHOCKED.

As mentioned before, I am not adventurous when it comes to food so nothing really appealed to me. I cannot count this as a negative towards Tiffins as I knew this going in AND I am really glad that Disney offers a wide variety of foods and tastes to its guests. I decided to go with the Apple Walnut Salad off the appetizer menu ($12), I mean how could you go wrong with this! Ryan decided to go with the Duo of Venison ($41) - Ethiopian coffee-infused venison, boerewors, soubise, chakalaka, tamarind, leek ash. At this point I again asked for two glasses of water as we hadn't received them yet.

Soon after, our food was dropped off by someone other than our server. Again, no water so we asked this server.

IMG_3732.jpg

Here's my salad. It was small (which I was expecting as it was an appetizer and was only $12), but I was really disappointed that there were only 2 cubes of apple in my APPLE walnut salad. In addition, I found the dressing to be rather flavourless.

IMG_3731.jpg

Here's Ryans Venison....ummm, where the rest of it LOL. I do understand that more Signature restaurants do "present" their food, but this looked strange to us...why is only 1/4 of the plate filled with food. We thought this was a HUGE rip off considering the $41 price tag for the meal. In addition, Ryan said it was cold when it arrived. We tried to flag down any server to let them know it arrived cold, but couldn't get anyones attention. He ended up eating it because Ryan is NOT a complainer at all.

Oh....and we were STILL waiting on water.

While we ate, our server NEVER came back to check in on us. Not long after we received our meal, we were done, we were upset with the service and experience and we waited for our server to come back. And waited. And waited. And waited.

FINALLY our server came back, but never asked how our meals were. Instead he just went straight to asking if we wanted dessert. We didn't.

I asked him if we could please have the water we had asked for now 4 times and the bill. The server didn't even flinch at the mention of water again.

Then we waited....and waited.

By now I was getting really upset as we were trying to make the 7:15 showing of Rivers of Light - this would be the only chance we could see it and it was on our MUST DO list as it would be a fist! Remember, we were sat at 5:27 pm, so this had been a VERY long meal and in our opinion a TERRIBLE experience.

giphy.gif

Finally our server came back with our bill....and our waters.

giphy.gif

We paid our bill quickly and literally RAN over to Rivers of Light. We made it with 2 minutes to spare.

As we waited, we talked about our Tiffins experience. Overall, we were extremely disappointed in every aspect - the food wasn't great, the prices weren't great, the service was absolutely terrible and we were made to wait for extended periods of time unnecessarily. We did overhear the couple sat beside us mentioned above also comment on how terrible the server was and that their food had arrived "warm to cold". I am sure that our experience was largely hindered by our awful server, but we don't have any plans to return anytime soon. We DO want to give the lounge a chance, so hopefully we will have a much better experience there and it will motivate us to head back and give it another try. At this point and based on how much the meal cost us, we would 100% have been happier to have eaten at Restaurantosaurus or Flame Tree BBQ.

We made a mental note to make a complaint when we returned back to our hotel as this server had ruined not only our experience, but at the very least the experience of the couple beside us. Honestly, we forgot to do this though LOL. We did send an email complaint when we returned home, but never received any confirmation or response. Hopefully someone heard us and has done something to better train this server (or got rid of him).

The show was...only okay. It was just a lot of the same and I don't really see a need to see it again. Sorry @prfctlyximprct , I just don't share the same love of this show as you do...don't hate me LOL. I'm not sure what we were really expecting, but we left feeling a bit disappointed.

We did like it, but don't see a need to see it again. We may also have been in a bad mood because of our dining experience.

Trying to get out of the show was a disaster. They were forcing everyone to take the same path through Dino-rama, which didn't make much sense to us.

After the show we headed back to the front of the park to watch the Tree of Life Awakens, which was pretty cool. To me this is more entertaining and interesting than ROL. We also had some nighttime photos taken.

PhotoPass_Visiting_AK_407540475635.jpg

Then we headed out, but not before taking a photo of the beautiful Christmas tree. We also had a photopass photo taken, but it never appeared in our account.

We walked back to the car and drove home. We had showers and a few drinks on our patio before calling it a night.

And there you have it...another day in the happiest place on earth done.

Here's my salad. It was small (which I was expecting as it was an appetizer and was only $12), but I was really disappointed that there were only 2 cubes of apple in my APPLE walnut salad. In addition, I found the dressing to be rather flavourless.

Finally our server came back with our bill....and our waters.

The whole experience at Tiffins sounds awful. I have experienced less than attentive service before at WDW but this is crazy especially at that pricepoint. Honestly I think I would have complained to a manager right then and there and I am by no means a complainer.

Wow....sounds like Tiffins has taken a nosedive.

This was my Apple Walnut salad in May 2017. It was fantastic and I still think about it.

It was definitely a much larger portion than what you had....with more apples....and a light but flavorful dressing.

Sad the salad I remember seems to be no more.....

Sorry your Tiffins experience was awful. The plating was laughable and your waiter sounds like an horrible person. I'm glad you complained about him!

Ugh, I REALLY should have complained to the manager right there on the spot. It it by far the worst dining experience I've EVER received and I am SO disappointed that it was on Disney property. Looking back now I really do wish I spoke with a manager right then, but by the time it was beyond bad we were in a rush to make ROL. I still can't believe how bad it actually was, but we do have a wonderful meal (one of my favorites to date) coming up later in the trip, so I guess you win some, you lose some.

WOW...that looks 100 times better than what I was served. It was actually an APPLE WALNUT salad and not just salad with a cube or two of apple in it LOL. I do remember reading MANY great dining experiences on these boards through TR's like yours which got me really excited to try this place. I guess this is the equivalent of my Cookes of Dublin chicken vs. your experience LOL.

It was awful. Literally the WORST dining experience that I think I've ever had (certainly the worst on Disney property). The funny thing was I was raving about the place to Ryan based on others TRs LOL. We still laugh that 1/2 of Ryan's dinner must have made it onto someone elses plate with a better waiter "hooking him up" :p
