Sooo- last night my DH went to the doctor with excruciating pain. Come to find out he might have a hernia. Nothing to require surgery (yet) but still inconvenient. We leave on Sunday... Anybody else go to the parks with an injury like this? :(

As long as the doctors say you can do stuff, I think you should!!

It has been my experience that doctors have NO problem telling you you shouldn't do X or Y or Z, if they think that it will be any problem at all. Or saying, "You can do it, but stop if it hurts,"...which is a lot like saying, "Don't do it," but you can still try, which is better than not being able to try.

Don't drive. Don't climb stairs. Don't lift things. Do lift things. No long walks. Go for walks. No swimming. Eat this, don't eat that, take this, go here, get sun without sunscreen but try not to get burned (my personal favorite), etc.

They have NO PROBLEM giving orders!!

If they say you can go, ride or have no physical limitations...go, ride, do what you feel like!

And if you pay a price by having a little pain, it's worth it.

:D

I would rent a scooter to get around. Take breaks and just enjoy the magic if you can. I hope he's not in too much pain. I hope a "Disney Pill" will help.;)

I had a hernia last year, and ended up having surgery about 3 months before our trip to WDW. Although, my hernia did not have any pain associated with it at all. It may have been a different type from your DH's, but I can tell you it may be uncomfortable being on his feet walking for long distances. Just follow your doctor's advice, as there can be serious complications if left untreated.

I am terrified that he will make matters worse by walking around. I would think that riding rides will only make it progress further. He is in clear pain, but calls it only "discomfort". :(.

One Little Spark...
It sounds like he should take it easy. This may be a perfect situation for a motorized scooter rental. I don't think most of the rides will be an issue for him, unless they put stress on that region (like, teacups or RNR).

Also, and this is all in good fun...I couldn't help myself but add this...

This was so funny! My DH and I really got a laugh out of it!! I agree with the scooter rental but I doubt that he will go for that...going to tough it out I guess! :(

Sorry about your DH's hernia. Has he done any fair amount of walking to get ready for the trip and how does he feel? A scooter may be the way to go if he is having trouble walking even a normal amount. Good luck, be careful and have a great vacation.

Thanks. He is normally in really good health so the walking wouldn't have been a problem before now. I have to work more on getting him to rent a scooter. It will be interesting with our 2 1/2 year old in a stroller and the DH in a scooter. :)

Did the doctors say he could walk and ride rides? Because if they didn't, he should ask them. And if they did, it won't make anything worse.

They will absolutely tell you when there are things you shouldn't do. They really, REALLY will.

Don't make it harder than it needs to be! Do what they tell you. It's the best you can do. And let them do the worrying for you. Worry won't help anything at all. :)

Thanks! They did say he could go.. Just take it easy and pay attention to if he needs to take a break. I guess I am just a natural worrier :) we will still have a blast walking at a snail's pace :)

Back in my mid-20's (around '94), I too had a hernia...wasn't really an issue for me unless I was splitting firewood, or picking up things I had no reason to be. Didn't even know I had one till I went on a stand-up coaster at Kings' Dominion in VA.! After living with it just fine for about 5 years, I finally had it repaired. Dr. told me it was one of the worst he'd seen. As long as DH takes it easy with the luggage, and takes a break of it gets bad, he should be fine. Don't be a hero and he has to use his head (which you of course already is no easy feat for us guys!). Enjoy your vacation!

You must have a high pain threshold!

I also had a hernia around my belly button... I was in pain till it got operated on... But if he's good... Then go and enjoy disney!! Just make sure he doesn't lift anything heavy and actually make it a worse situation! Especially while down there! :)

Hope he can at least enjoy some of the things he was looking forward to doing and wont have to alter your plans too much so that it isnt fun. I would be the same way, telling my wife I'm O.K. to go and hide my discomfort as best I could. I wouldnt think you would have any heavy lifting to do , but the jostling around on some rides might cause discomfort. Have him try a few of the easier rides and see how he makes out.
