Help... Luggage question.

I am leaving this Saturday for WDW flying Southwest... Their carry on luggage max is 10x16x24.... My daughter's luggage measures that but when I fill it to the brim it sticks out... Does this matter????

Thanks for your help!

Remember she's allowed a "personal item" just like an adult, like a backpack, crossover bag, etc. Get creative, small shopping bag? Or can someone else put some of those items in their suitcase? I have yet to see anyone actually measure a suitcase, but there's always a first. I'm assuming you already have 2 checked suitcases per person, those are free on Southwest.

Yes we do already each have 2 checked suitcases per person... And it's $75 per piece after that... We will definitely have to get creative. I don't think she gets any personal items bc I didn't buy a seat for her.... Great suggestions... Thanks...

You an actually "carry" her "personal item". My son has autism and even though he's over 18, I tend to carry his items because he isn't as careful with avoiding softly hitting someone with them as I wish he was.

The last time I flew Southwest, they put the carryons in a device at the gate to measure them. If they didn't fit, they had to be tagged and checked there.

Can you send some things in a package directly to your resort? If she is a lap baby does SW allow her to have a carry on as well and you have a carry on and personal item? I'd check first because it would be a lot cheaper to send that package esp. if you send two or three small flat rate priority boxes USPS (UPS is probably even cheaper) directly to the resort. I have only flown once with a lap baby, but between the baby and the diaper bag and my purse it was all I wanted to handle. Good luck and have fun!!!!

Also, many of the airlines have changed the dimensions of the carry on bag. It is now 22 x 14 x 9 and some airlines will not let you check it at the gate if it's larger. You must return to the luggage check in and if you miss your flight, "Oh Well".
Wouldn't hurt to check their website or call them.

Some places are really cracking down. I was on a flight where every carry on and personal item had to be placed in the measuring tool, even if it was clearly small enough. How long are you going that you've filled 2 suitcases per person? Admittedly, I've never traveled with a 6 year old, but I've been able to pack for 7 days for 2 people in 1 suitcase that wasn't even max size before!

If you have 2 packed suitcases per person already, there have got to be a lot of non-essentials going along, and there must be something you can take out of your daughter's suitcase in order to keep it from bulging beyond the maximum dimensions -- or, as others have suggested, put the extra stuff into a "personal item" for someone in your party.

(*Note: If your daughter is traveling as a "lap infant" without a separate seat/ticket, you may want to check with Southwest about whether she is "entitled" to 2 bags and a personal item, as I'm not sure whether the baggage allowance is calculated per passenger or per ticketed passenger. I Googled around and can't find a clear answer. If, however, you purchased a seat for her, then that's another 2 bags and personal item you have at your disposal if you need them and can carry them.)

The size does matter -- sometimes they check and sometimes they don't, but if they do, you could be in for a hefty fee for an oversized bag.

LOL - that was my knee-jerk reaction, too! We pack all the clothing, toiletries, entertainment items, breakfast and snack foods, and other accoutrements that the 4 of us need for a week using 1 21" carryon per person, with only DH and I even bothering to take a personal item! To each his own, however -- and I do remember that when my kids were infants (the OP said her daughter is 6 months old), it seemed like we always traveled with an ungodly amount of "special equipment" and "just in case" items. There might be one suitcase just devoted to diapers and wipes! (Which reminds me -- OP, if that's the case, consider having such items shipped to your resort from Amazon or diapers.com, both of which offer free shipping over a certain amount. Given the estimated dates, you can time the placement of your order so that it's likely to arrive a day or two before you do. Disney resorts are great about accepting such deliveries -- just be sure it's directed to your resort and has both your name and your expected arrival date on the label. You can track its delivery and call to double-check after it arrives. No sense in having to lug those things around, yourself!)

Exactly. Bring along disposable bibs and skip the two or three outfits per day for the baby. Hand wash outfits for the baby and hang to dry so that could cut your packing. I was guessing that at least one suitcase was diapers, wipes, formula. I'd ship all that rather than pack....although if you pack it and take it with you that should leave you with an empty suitcase for any merchandise you buy on the trip.
