I guess using the word 'Because' would not be good enough?

I love The Beatles music for the style it represented. For the way that, after all these years, it is still as fresh and vibrant as the day it was recorded. They pioneered the idea of a Concept Album and created a lot of the studio magic still used today. They were musically sound and lyrically excellent. Best Band EVER.

As for the movie, I'm not sure on the exact release date, The Great Escape was back in that time frame.

Your Welcome. Now as far as the 'Older Generation', I was born in 1969 so I'm only 35. I have been a Beatles Fan since I was 5. Good luck on your project.

Heres what I have ...

This is just a few beginning statements taken from the Guinness Rockopedia, which was published in 1998...I hope it helps!
"The rise of The Beatles in 1963 was the most spectacular event in popular music since the birth of Rock "N" Roll a decade before. Within a year they achieved two feats previously deemed impossible; surpassing the fame and success of Rock's premiere idol, Elvis Presley, and thrusting British Pop to worldwide attention. In the seven years between their first chart-toppers and their split in 1970, The Beatles changed the course of Pop and Rock, leaving a body of work rarely rivalled for quality, originality and as subsequent generations discovered- durability. Their influence on 60's culture was incalculable and passing decades have seen their legacy undiminished, continuing to inspire musicians of every genre."
This book also lists the following...
Read: The Complete Beatles Chronicle: By Mark Lewisohn
London Beatles Fan Club
4 Oaklands, Constance Road,
Whitton, Twickenham, Middlesex
TW2 7JQ, UK
OR
goto WWW.lbfc.demon.co.uk/

I have read several books on the Beatles, and in my humble opinion, I just love their music. They were new and different for their time, and the songs are easy to sing along to and relate to, and besides, they were quite the young hotties back in the day!

Ok, perhaps we old people think that you should do your own homework.

Off the soapbox now.

As you know, the Beatles were heavily influenced by Black American artists.
Radio in this time period was heavily segregated. White kids in Jackson, Mississippi were not about to get caught dead listening to Chuck Berry, but they could listen to the Beatles. (This phenomenon is also, unfortunately, why Pat Boone recorded "Tutti Frutti")

Look into the reasons for the British Invasion.
Was there a cultural "kinship" with Britain?
Some sort of escape from the civil rights problems in the US?

Look at the products of the era:

mini skirts
go-go boots
Vidal Sassoon
Mary Quant
James Bond
love beads
long hair on men
the end of the beehive for women
bra-burning
the draft and the use of student deferments
recreational drug use
the Pill and its implications

Watch every episode of The Avengers, and "In Like Flint"

<edit> More brain dump :

Like any phenomenon, the Beatles were belssed with the 3 R's
Right product
Right time
Right packaging

After the spirit of sacrifice of WWII, (just TRY telling people today that they have to ration sugar and save bacon grease!!) and the prosperity and conformity of the 1950's, America was ready to shake things up. WWII is often called "the right war, or the good war" because people saw the point of it. After the quagmire of Korea, Americans weren't so sure about our role as policeman of the world. Along comes Vietnam, just as un-winnable as Korea, and public opinion shifts dramatically from opinion in 1942.

Look at the popular music the Beatles replaced--Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, big bands.

Also remember that the youth were children of WWII veterans who grew up in a prosperity unknown to their parents. Many of those college protesters were first generation college students. They had the time and means to contemplate where they wanted to go in life, a luxury their parents didn't have. Many chose total rebellion. And playing Beatles music was a surefire way to tick off your parents.

Is it me, or are you being a little impatient! You posted only three and half hours ago. The people in my time zone have been out all evening. Elsewhere they are probably returning from work and maybe getting ready for a Friday night out themselves.

As far as the Beatles sound I’d suggest you hit Google to see if you can find some details about the technical composition of their songs. I’m no musician, but I’m lead to believe that they were the first to do certain things. If you can mention some of those in your report it would certainly help.

As for movies – there are too many to count between 1940 and 1969. Do you have to watch “a movie” or is there more to it than that? Must it be iconic, historic or maybe a mould breaker like the Beatles were?

Sean Conery Bond Films.
Any number of Disney Animated features or something like 20 000 Leagues Under the Sea.
A whole host of war movies – How about Battle of Britain? Set in the 40’s, filmed in the 60’s. That has a nice symmetry to it for your report. Plus it’s not a bad film.
2001 a Space Odyssey
