Heated Pools

Anyone have any experience with the pools in January/February?

Heading to Yacht Club this week and plan to spend as much time at Stormalong Bay as possible. Many of the days coming up are mid 80s but next week they can dip down into the high 50s and low 60s right now.

I was wondering if people find the pools comfortable at these temps. I understand the pools are heated but didn’t want to assume that was enough to keep us warm if we decide to do a late night swim one of these days.

We spent some time in the pool at French Quarter yesterday when it was about 67 out. The water was warmer than the air so it was nice while you were in the water but leaving the pool was not great. My kid didn't seem to notice but my wife and I had to run to the towels. There were still people swimming in the evening when it had fallen into the high 50s!

As others have posted, the air will be chilly enough that when you come up from beneath the water it will be uncomfortable. My head, shoulders and torso got chilled standing in the pool. When you get out you need multiple towels to dry off as well as you can. Reminds me somewhat of the polar dips we do for charitable organizations... get in and get out fast. I much prefer the hot tub soak which can be tolerated a lot better.

My kid was totally fine getting in during 50 some degree temps. It stunk to get out. No way you'd get me in at those temps though. Super uncomfortable to me.
At Daytona this weekend and the Hotel had a very nice, large outdoor heated pool. Ambient temps were at the mid 40's range but when that offshore wind blew, well, I did not care how heated the pool was being outside in it was a no go.

Back in the day, Disney pools were heated to a balmy temperature and they would have a fog over them on cool winter mornings. Either I’m getting older or they have dialed down the thermostat over the years as it’s a no go under the high 70’s.😀

It gets chilly at times, but at least with Yacht you have the buildings close by. I stayed at Pop and had to walk a long distance from the 80's/90's pool. I was freezing my off the whole way.

It depends on the hotel because I was told they are supposed to be heated all year round and no they weren't. I'd even read somewhere, can't remember where, it's been a few years now but that they were supposed to be always heated. From my experiences, stayed at Pop Century in Sep. 2012 and Aug. 2013. Hot temperatures during the day so the main pool and one of the other pools felt good and cool but at night when temps went down to the 70's, these same pools was still cold as earlier in the day and did not feel good at all. Never could enjoy the pools at night because of that. Went to Beach Club in May 2014 and May 2018. Stormalong Bay had the same problem. Both trips. Made me mad. I'll just say that all of this basically told me that the heating was a lie and that they kept them a good cold temperature no matter what. Made me wonder why these hotels never invested in having indoor pools as well. I've read of other Disney World fans that have wondered this also. Doesn't make any sense. Now then so I stayed at Grand Floridian, also in May 2018. Guess what? The main pool there was heated. And it felt glorious. Partially because during that trip, there was a lot of rain from a major storm system that deluged Florida which meant many cloudy days and temps only as high as in the 70's so Stormalong Bay on this same trip (it was a long split trip between BC and GF) was horrible unless it was sunny and hot but at GF, it was wonderful. So yes, it depends on the hotel and some of these places aren't heating their pools up from what they claim. I can also attest that if they are heated, you can see some steam rising as, well, what I witnessed at the GF pool but also heated pools in general and I stayed at BC again in January 2015. Very cool temperatures and one of the small pools and Stormalong Bay both, I could tell were not heated in the slightest. No steam at any time that I observed and also from my room, which the small pool I could see, a girl yelled loudly, "It's so cold! Oh my God!" and I went out to my balcony to observe and she was getting out, very frustrated. Didn't even bother swimming at any of them at that point. Also we all need to be wondering why they won't invest in building indoor pools at these hotels? A lot of fancy hotels do have both at their resorts and you'd think the "smart people" who work for Disney and the hotel corp. would have realized this a long time ago since DW is open all year round and Florida does still have cold nights and the occasional cold, hard freeze in the wintertime...as for me and my hubby, we are in the DVC and our ownership is at GF and Poly and we are in the process of selling as we have quit going to DW. Pains me to say it but this place has really gone downhill in everything and it's not worth the money anymore. Hopefully we will be able to sell our timeshares soon. What was once our happy place is sadly no more.

The pools are 100% heated, maybe just not to everyone’s preferred temperature.

There is no Winter in Florida. It's confined to a series of cold fronts. You can come down and find mid-70's in January. Or as easily find mid-50's. FWIW I was in Orlando last about 2 weeks ago - mid 50's. There were people in pools. Not a lot. But some. So it all depends on your tolerance level.

You're not leaving over the water temp, right? Name hotels in Orlando that have indoor pools? There really aren't many and none at the major park resorts. Is it like swimming at an outdoor pool at Vail that's heated like a hot tub...no, but it is warmer. Swam many times at AKL in winter months and been fine and seen the steam

I recall something similar happening at a hotel near WDW that had a lobby type pool - except the fumes reached guest rooms, also.

It can also be a danger to lifeguards.

Since the outdoor temperatures are tolerable for most of the year, it may not be worth the risk involved in having an indoor pool. My HS had an indoor pool, but it was in a separate building so did not impact the classrooms, etc.
