Have you ever dreamed of being a CM? Here's how to fake it.

Certainly, everyone here who isn't already a CM must have fantasized about becoming a Disney cast member at least once. In fact, my Disney Team has the tradition of discussing this matter every time we visit the parks. The conversation is always predictable, but it's repeated every trip all the same. Tragically, not everyone can work at Walt Disney World. Some of us are reluctant to part with family and friends to move to Orlando; others have conflicting career pathways. As for myself, I have a beard. This prevents me from crossing the (unjust!) clean-shaven barrier of Disney employment. My sister is equally frustrated. Not because she has a beard, but because she is still young and trapped miles away from Orlando.

Fortunately, we have found a remedy for our dilemma. We have become fake cast members.

See, here's what we do. On the day when we visit MGM Studios, we always try to coordinate what we're wearing such that we match, and we're dressed somewhat outlandishly (on one occasion, we brought berets with us, heh). Whenever we're on Sunset Boulevard in MGM Studios, we wait around for a while until we hear the song, "Stompin' at the Savoy*." Then, we instantly spring into action, dancing around the Boulevard, stunning onlookers with our talent and beautiful choreography! ... Actually, it's all improvised, and we have absolutely no dancing talent. I'm especially clumsy. But we eventually attract an audience nevertheless! Sometimes, a group will join my family and friends who were already watching the 'show'. And once it's over, we sometimes manage to get an applause from the audience (again, with assistance from our people who are standing among them).

I feel a little guilty for actually convincing these people that they're watching an 'official' Disney show -- it's so horrible and ridiculous, it might cause them to lose faith in Disney. My mom overheard the following conversation ...

Kid: "Come on, let's watch the show!"
Parent: "Uhh, no. We don't have time for that."

One time, there was a bystander whom we absolutely couldn't fool: an actual Disney cast member. Dressed as a 30s fan girl, she approached us and said, "Ohhh, it's Fwed Astaiih and Ginger Ro-gers! I'm your biggest faan! Is this for a mo-vie?" She was quite a character, and it was nice to see some official recognition for our 'work'. :p

* You may wonder, "Why 'Stompin' at the Savoy'?" Our performance is inspired by a Steve Martin act on Saturday Night Live.

Well, I've never done anything quite like that, but every trip I try to find the Dapper Dans on Main Street. I sing in a barbershop quartet and after they finish their show, if you tell them you are a barbershopper, they'll sing a song or two with you, let you wear one of their straw hats, and get some applause. It's a hoot!

Ah yes while I am a CM for real i loved finding a new guy at the comedy warehouse and getting them to pick me as a volunteer for the show. If anyone from the CW hears a suggestion for a yodelling song you know i'm in the audience. If anyone wants to really get into the act go to the adventurers club at Pleasure Island, goofiest bunch of guys I know:cool: By the way Calamar feel free to stop over by the Backlot Tour if your their before April sure could help out that poor CM telling guests the ride aint open;)

That is a brilliant idea, my friend. I just discovered this afternoon that I will in fact be travelling to Florida a week from today for a Disney trip. I'm not sure whether we'll have time to go to MGM, unfortunately, but my sister and I will definitely try to perform if we do. Hrm, or maybe we could find a way to join a parade at one of the other parks ... :hammer:

That's awesome, good job. Yes, I think I'll try that next time.
(Note -- I can't sing.)

shhh... don't give Disney ideas. They might start using guests as negative salaried labor (ie, you pay to work)....

I sure wish I would have taken a picture of this kid I saw during the cast preview of PhilharMagic, he had to be around 15 or 16, he was dressed like management with a fake walkie talkie with hands free, beeper, and a cast lanyard. He had on a pink pastel long sleeve shirt and black pants, and black wing tips, the only thing he was missing was a name tag.

Heh, hilarious story. I hope he did all that during the colder seasons, though, since one probably wouldn't enjoy the Florida heat in black pants and a long-sleeve shirt. Yeah, I know -- the costumed cast members have it even worse.

I've always wanted to visit Disney dressed in a black suit and tie. Heh, wouldn't that look out of place among all the other guests dressed in typical tourist attire? It would be great fun to ride 'Splash Mountain' with a stiff, serious expression throughout the whole ride -- a challenge, I know -- and then to view the resulting photo.

Since I'll be in WDW a week from today, I suppose it's a fine opportunity to execute this plan, right? Well, although the weather is suitable, I'll only be in the parks for one day, and I wouldn't want to be 'formal' the whole trip ... :p

Calamar, absolutely downright hillarious!! This is something I would do in the middle of WDW. We'll have to keep in contact and meet up sometime in WDW to scare...er...entertain a few guests. :animwink:

We're heading down to WDW on February 7th and will be in the parks the 8th through the 18th. (We'll be in Magic Kingdom the 8th, 12th, and 17th.) I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for you! I'd definitely put a few dollars in your mickey ears to see a performance like that. Spontaneous Disney magic!
