I've always heard that it was because WDW was too busy to shut HM down for long enough to install and remove the overlay. How long does that actually take? MK is pretty slow in September and late January, so I can't imagine that it's actually that big of a concern

The main reason MK doesn't do the overlay is because TDO doesn't want to spend the money.

You'll get a lot of argument about it, especially from folks who really want it to come to WDW, but the issue is: the reasons it exists at Disneyland don't really have the same impact as they do at WDW.

Disneyland relies a lot on "locals" - not just those who live in the immediate area and have an AP, but folks within a 1/2 a day drive. The overlay gives an incentive to come more frequently/appeals to those folks who don't have to plan a week-long vacation to go to the park. An overlay would have far less impact on attendance, if any measurably at all, at WDW where most folks fly in for a vacation.

It's also logistics - closing it up for weeks on either end to install and uninstall - the MK cannot really handle that as casually because it has so fewer attractions than Disneyland - and many more of the "once in a lifetime" guests - when you couple the impact that it would have along with the above no real reason for them to do it, it just doesn't make sense in any way (except to online fans that really really want it LOL).

Basically, it's far more economical and less work for Disney to instead celebrate the holidays by charging $75 a head to shoot some fake snow over Main Street, keep the park open a few hours later, and throw a cup of hot coca at you. Since folks gladly do that, why would they go to all the bother.

I do appreciate that Del Toro's having a lot of effort put into the writing seeing as a bad script was a contributor to how last time sucked. If we're lucky they might say something at D23 next year.

I actually hope the movie is just as bad as the last one. I don't want to see another classic ride get a POTC like movie tie in.

I heard that the props and set peices for Tokyo's installation were originally intended for MK's version, but TDO passed on it. Not sure how much of that is true, but let's be honest, would anyone be surprised? :banghead:

If that's true, I don't even know what to say. I've been on the Tokyo Haunted Mansion Holiday three times, and it's really fantastic. The WDW ride track and sets they cloned for Tokyo work beautifully with the Holiday show.

A reminder for Haunted Mansion fans - This weekend was the 45th anniversary of Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. It opened August 9th, 1969, after the house itself had been built in 1963 and rumors ran rampant through 1960's Southern California that Walt had made it too scary and they had to redo it entirely. That wasn't true, it was actually the 1964 World's Fair that got in the way, but it made for a great urban legend. It was no big surprise after it had finally opened and made all the newspapers, Disneyland set it's all-time high record attendance day a week later on August 16th, 1969 when 82,516 visitors packed though the Disneyland turnstiles.

Disneyland is selling 45th Anniversary t-shirts and souvenirs starting this weekend in New Orleans Square, alongside the new Haunted Mansion merchandise that debuted earlier this summer.

It's about a 15 to 18 day refurb going into the Holiday overlay, from around Labor Day weekend until the second weekend in September. Then about 10 to 12 days refurb coming out of the Holiday overlay, from usually the Tuesday after New Year's until the second weekend in January.

This year the Haunted Mansion Holiday refurbishment dates look like this at Disneyland:

Monday, August 25th until Thursday, September 11th (18 days)
Tuesday, January 7th until Friday, January 17th (10 days)

At Tokyo Disneyland, their Haunted Mansion will be closed to install the Holiday overlay roughly the same time as Anaheim's:

Saturday, August 23rd until Monday, September 7th (16 days)

The toughest part about doing these Holiday overlays at Magic Kingdom Park, either the Haunted Mansion or It's A Small World, is the fact that there are a lot fewer rides at Magic Kingdom compared to Disneyland, especially big E Tickets, and the Magic Kingdom has an overall smaller ride capacity than Disneyland has.

Disneyland can withstand the hit by having a few rides closed, but Magic Kingdom Park can't.

If a holiday overlay were to come to Magic Kingdom, I would think Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy would be reasonable. At Disneyland, Space Mountain is only closed for a couple days on each side of the Halloween themed Ghost Galaxy overlay. It's primarily an overlay done with HD projections and new audio, with only a few real props or set pieces or signage needing to be installed. Ghost Galaxy should be an easy overlay TDO should be looking at, I would think.

Would love to see Ghost Galaxy come to Magic Kingdom.
