Has Disney lost their knack for the details?

I think they are still the best in the business. Unfortunately Walt has been dead for 50 years and there is more and more of a corporate mentality as time goes by, which is never a good thing. What they need to always remember to do is separate themselves from every other park. Nobody is there because they want a park like Six Flags. They want the Disney touch and to me that has always been attention to detail more than anything else.

I don't think Disney has lost any ground on the details. There does seem to be maintenance miscues than in years past, but with how crowded the parks are now compared to prior years...it's probably pretty hard to keep up...not to mention the cuts they've had recently.
cuts, wow a place with record attendance and premium prices needing to make cuts. What would happen if their numbers dropped. I would hate to think about it.

Blink, blink. Breathe, breathe. Day in, day out.
Nah they're still on point with details. They nailed the Fantasyland expansion. The 3rd track station added for Toy Story Mania is much more details than the other. Heck, even Frozen's additions at Epcot were added with excruciating details.

The only things that kind of died were the star wars and frozen last minute pop ups at Hollywood Studios honestly. Anything that was rushed.

I would beg to differ on the under the sea ride? Poor in some aspects.

...This is actually true. Disney is losing their touch of detail on ATTRACTIONS... But. Not the actual scenery itself. I guess the same could be said for the Frozen additions at Epcot. The queue line, sommerhaus, ect. look amazing but the ride is... Meh. On detail.

I'm curious, other then the ceiling, which I have heard a lot about and agree with, what does everyone think was lacking in the line of detail for the Mermaid ride.

The lame plastic fish at the start of the ride, the ceiling, the lighting, the floor you ride across, the lack of immersive feel since you are supposed to be under the sea. No pizazz to the ride at all. Aside from that it's great.
Oh just to mention I noticed about 3 inches of a stud showing because the stone facade did not reach the floor. I actually HAD to ask to see a supervisor and point it out, they knew about it and eventually it got fixed. If Walt weren't already dead that would have killed him.

The only good AA's in the Mermaid attraction is Scuttle and Ursula.

I agree the main room has so much potential for details that they ignored. When a ride takes that long to open I expect to be wowed.

No. People have lost their knack for looking at details.
Here may be one reason for that.

When I go to a place like Halloween Horror Nights at Universal I pay a hefty price for the experience. Knowing that the lines for the houses are extremely long, I try to make sure I get my money's worth by skipping the scare zones, shows and rides in order to seem like I am getting the most out of that expensive ticket. It's possible with all of the price hikes in the past few years that a large bulk of Disney guests have the same way of thinking.

I just checked some travel sites and an average decent hotel room outside of Disney for a single night, mid week next week, is anywhere from $40 to $100. The same size room with no extras at Disney's Art of Animation for that same night is $289 per night. So with people paying almost 200% more for something, they are going to want to make sure they enjoy it. When a park entry costs $115, some guests just might want to quickly hop from place to place making sure they get the most rides when the parks always seem crowded.

Maybe we have to break this down into two categories, one being the theming and the other the small upkeep details are around the parks. Let's say things like painted concrete walk areas that use to be sharp and kept now allowed to fade. Chipped paint on ride areas etc. ride components left in disrepair, example little mermaid.

Exactly, imagineering and maintenance are two different groups with two different budgets. Disney sill builds some amazing things, but then they all go to crap. I was on 7DMT this summer and could not believe the wear that the queue is already showing. I believe it is a combination of inferior materials used in construction, lack of upkeep, and people who insist on touching every single thing they see. That last reason is eveidently clear in the queue to TSMM - people destroy that queue.

And the floor mosaic in "Be Our Guest".

From what I've heard, guests have been prying up pieces of the mosaic as personal souvenirs.

That's insane. Wear and tear from touching things that you should not be touching is one thing (It's still a behavior than needs to be curtailed) but to pry up part of the floor to take home with you?

You can't fight people wanting to touch things so you have engineer for it. There is a museum in Philadelphia that welcomes touching things its called The Please Touch Meuseum. So it can be designed to be touched without destroying the place. I don't think folks are being let in with hammers and pry bars?
