Has anyone seen Cat in the Hat?

I had intentions of checking out this movie this weekend, but I have heard only dreadful things about it from friends (including it being one of the worst movies they have ever seen and definetely not for very young children). I wanted to get a wider opinion on this, so I was wondering if anyone here saw it and, if so, what did you think of it? Is it a better idea to save my money?

I haven't heard anything about it. I'd also appreciate knowing how it is. I'd hate to take the kids to see it if it's not good for children.

There are links to a ton of reviews here, and hardly a kind word among them:

For those of you planning on taking the kiddies, apparently there is a good bit of potty humor, as well as some bawdy jokes alluding to castration, erections, and prostitution. (A lot of it will likely go over their heads, but it's there, nonetheless.)

From what I've heard, there is almost nothing relating the movie to Dr. Seuss.

I don't plan on seeing it, unless someone wants to give me a few hundred bucks for the waste of my time.

Yeah, I don't get the compulsion to take such charming (albeit brief) source material and "fix it" with badly-placed fart and ______ jokes. I understand they have to pad to make Seuss run over an hour, but why slaughter the spirit of the original to do so? I had high hopes for this movie, but....ah well.

With this film, I will not bother
I will save my seven dollars

I will read a book while tucked in bed
And ask what went through Audrey's head

Yes I saw that in the MTV Behind the scenes showing of a clip. Funny I thought... Pathetic none the less.

I plan to see it. Actually I was quite amused with what I saw with previews and stuff. But I tend to like potty humor and suggestive jokes.

While I`m not saying it`s NOT bad, I don`t know I haven`t seen it, But I can tell you that When Star Wars first came out, many critics gave it a thumbs down saying it was stupid and silly! Well Star wars is a CLASSIC and has millions of fans all over the world.

I'm not opposed to that type of humor in general (although I think it's not easy to do it well as opposed to just doing it to take up celluloid, but that's another issue).

When you put Dr. Seuss' name on a project, though, that implies some adherance to the man's philosophy. Ted Geisel never tried to insert forced contemporary references into his works and he didn't make naughty allusions. He wrote for children, but in a way that adults could love equally. When Hollywood abandons this format but still puts the man's name on the project, that's wrong, in my opinion. If they want to make jokes about the various bodily parts and functions we've all come to know and love, then more power to 'em. But don't try to connect it to the work of a man who never did anything of the sort.

Well, she may not have been able to refuse the project in general, but she did have some creative say, from what I've read. I recall reading that drafts of the scripts were sent to her and she insisted on the removal of certain jokes. Based on what was left, one can only imagine what she got pulled out.
