20 August 2000: Bald/Fire Mountain -- make way for Journey to the Center of the Earth???
It is almost approaching 2 years now since the rumors about Fire Mountain and Bald Mountain (see below 1998 news) started circulating. While these projects (at least Bald Mountain) definitely existed as possible projects at WDI, it looks like they may not be built for some time - if at all. These projects now join the list of great attractions never built...or maybe until a new CEO visits the WDI model shop. (Just like how Splash Mountain was green lighted by Eisner when he visited WDI model shop)
Now here comes the rumor....please note it is a rumor, and there are at least 2 other projects being looked at by Eisner - so just as with Fire/Bald Mountain - this may come to absolutely nothing.
The next possible phase of construction at MK is to be a huge expansion into a new land (41 acres of expansion behind Big Thunder Mountain), incorporating at least 1 major E ticket ride -- a copy of the awesome thrill ride mountain being built at Tokyo Disney Sea. This is WDI at their best - and what an amazing addition this would be to MK.
The following description of the Tokyo attraction from
http://www.tokyodisneysea.co.jp/english/index.html
"Mysterious Island brings to life the writings of Jules Verne, the father of modern science fiction. Guests can visit Captain Nemo's secret base where he will invite them to become members of his crew for two thrilling adventures. On one, they will plunge to the bottom of the sea and encounter shipwrecks and mysterious creatures. On the other, they will journey to the depths the earth where the only escape route lies through an active volcano."
"Journey to the Center of the Earth" is located within the volcano itself. Riders will travel downward through the volcano in "Enhanced Motion Vehicles" and encounter a large Animatronic creature.
Visit here for some Tokyo construction shots.

9 March 2000: The saga continues
A good source at another Disney coaster has told us that whilst the Vekoma lay down coaster has been given the go ahead, it will not be at MK. Instead the coaster will make an appearance at Animal Kingdom.
2 March 2000: Jump the gun
While we have a source indicating Fire Mountain is go, we may have jumped the gun on the ground prep behind pirates. Several sources have written in to say that the current site prep is set to re-house parade storage that must be moved to make way for Fire Mountain. Similar to all the move around that occurred for Rock n Roller Coaster at the Studios.
1 March 2000: Fire Mountain approved??
We have received several reports that site preparation is definitely underway behind pirates, although no sign of actual construction is visible yet. A new source today has told us that Fire Mountain is 100% go, and HAS got final approval.
21 February 2000: Fire Mountain preparation - thanks Jesse
"Pirates" is closing for rehab for what seems to be a few months as well as the Jungle Cruise. Rumors say they are rerouting part of the Jungle Cruise waterway as well as redoing the queue and replacing the boats in the style of the new Disneyland Jungle Cruise boats. Supposedly there have been reports of Imagineers raising balloons behind Pirates for proposed height of new attraction. It would make sense that the Jungle Cruise River as well as the queue would be affected by the new "fire mountain" attraction.
8 August 1999: Fire or Bald? Maybe both?
Well some more news has surfaced that ties up with what we have heard over the past few months. It seems that we could be looking at BOTH Fire Mountain and Bald Mountain for the Magic Kingdom.
The Fire Mountain project refers to a rollercoaster type ride, although opinion of the type varies from a Vekoma Lay Down prototype, to a Vekoma hybrid Inverted/Standard coaster. The location of Fire Mountain still points to the area around Big Thunder and Splash Mountain.
Bald Mountain is the project based around the Disney villains concept. The new expansion of land across 20k and into Fantasy Land will house this new attraction, and the brand new land to which it belongs. The new MK land, based around the villains is most likely where the whole Shadowlands rumors stem from. The Bald Mountain project is another water based/hybrid coaster attraction, making some use of the existing 20k lagoon and the new area built behind Fantasy Land.
It is clear that both of these attractions are MAJOR projects, certainly in the $100 million upwards category. So which will be built when? Well until we have some official announcement we can only guess. BUT, we know for sure that preliminary work has begun (as detailed below), and MK needs a new thrill ride soon. My guess is 2001 for Fire Mountain, and 2003 for the new villains area featuring Bald Mountain.
22 July 1999: Fire or Bald Mountain?
MK is getting ready for some BIG expansion. If all goes ahead we are looking at
41 acres of expansion behind Big Thunder Mountain joining up with the new area below
Large expansion of 20k Leagues across into the area behind Fantasy Land
As for rides in these areas. A coaster based on Bald Mountain for the 20k Lagoon, and a major new technology ride behind Big Thunder.
Neither of these projects have been confirmed or given the full go ahead. But preliminary investigation is being done by WDI, and drainage mapping, and drilling is going on in the park right now.
Also interesting that Disney just bought another 1200 acres Northeast of MK.
It seems that Fire Mountain and the Pirates/Splash location have been a red herring!
16 June 1999: Fire Mountain to go in MK
Fire Mountain is now strongly rumored to go in the Magic Kingdom right between Splash Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean. Nothing officially confirmed, but it appears that ground clearing has already begun in this area.
9 May 1999: BIG news on this rumor.
Seems that Fire Mountain is definitely a go, but it is NOT going to be in the 20 000 Leagues lagoon. There will still be a major E-ticket ride put into the lagoon area as well. This story has now been confirmed by two different sources inside Disney.
So we now have 2 questions....
Where is Fire Mountain going to be built in the Magic Kingdom?
What is going into the 20 000 lagoon?
28 March 1999: There has been very little new news on this rumored attraction, Fire Mountain. Latest rumors are that the coaster will feature 5 inversions and an underwater section, including a launch out the top of a volcano.
5 December, 1998: At the Magic Kingdom, replacing 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea -- which closed three years ago is a major priority. "It's a very valuable piece of property," says Paul Osterhout, senior show producer and design director for the Magic Kingdom. But nothing will materialize immediately, Osterhout adds. That's because Disney plans a "major attraction" on that portion of the Magic Kingdom, and such attractions typically take five years to complete from design through buildout. Both Osterhout and Greg Emmer, vice president of the Magic Kingdom, are close mouthed about widespread speculation that a roller coaster dubbed Fire Mountain would be built on the location, only that there are lots of ideas floating around for new changes at the Magic Kingdom.
October, 1998
Following 20 000 leagues closing a couple of years ago, the lagoon has been sitting empty begging for a new attraction. Well it seems that finally the Imagineers have found a replacement, and it is great news for us thrill riders!!
Rumors strongly suggest that a new inverted coaster 'Fire Mountain', is heading into the lagoon. A huge volcano will be added, and the indoor ride promises inverted elements, strong theming, and an on board soundtrack!
It was rumored that Fuji Film may be the sponsor of the ride, but with WDWs close connections with Kodak, this seems very unlikely.
