Has anyone had any stellar experiences with cast members lately?

My favourite CM interactions are those who reeally know about where they are working and are as enthused about wdw as you are and are able to share tips/facts etc! I have often walked into one of the resort stores to pick something up and still been stood there 20 minutes later talking!

The wife and I had gotten off the DCL's Magic in March and went to MK for a little while. The wife went on Mine Train and it started to rain so the babies (22 months at the time) and I took shelter under Friar"s Nook. Well, the girls were getting ancy because they were stuck and I picked them up and they were looking inside the serving area. One of the CMs gets an ice cream cone and asked us through the window if she could have it. She then asked if my other daughter can have one as well. I'm not one to turn down anything for free at WDW, so we said yes and thanks so much. It was totally unsolicited and a kind act. Well, the ride was down because of the storm and I could not use my FP. I went to the kiosks to inquire if they could somehow take away the one I had, and sort of give my wife a freebie to use so all of us could at least get on something (small world) as a family. The CM didnt have to, but she did. She converted mine and gave the wife an extra. I was very thankful and sent a letter to Disney GS to tell them their CMs made a little magic for us.
And to the poster who mentioned DCL, I always enjoy my interactions with the crew. I wish I could have those with every CM on land.

Yes they can and that's what Disney is losing in trying to replace CM's like this with cheap immigrant labor on H2B visa's (service workers) and CP kids.

It's CM's like the one you describe who are immersed in the world and the lady who made my day who actually make the magic at WDW.

After reading your comments, I also have some concern about the loyal, long-term, CMs--hoping that some don't eventually get replaced by a lower salary range, labor pool. I've read (in other threads) about some staff cuts. I hope that WDW will weigh out the value of experience and important contributions, from their core group of CMs, before any more cost-cutting measures are considered. WDW's appeal is not just the parks and attractions, but also, the positive guest experience made possible by many of the CMs.

Just a side note here: my sense is that some (not all) of the newer CMs, from both the H2B group and CPs, may produce some dedicated workers, once they learn all aspects of their new job. WDW needs to select candidates who are enthusiastic and really care about the parks, regardless of which specific labor pool they come from.

One of the real problems with both H2B and CP is both are short term programs so the CM who is at Disney will both be there for under a year which drives the current all workers are interchangeable cogs in the disney machine strategy, Never realizing that it's long term enthusiastic CM's who really create the magical moments for the guests.

My sister and her family returned last week from a week-long visit to WDW, and had some wonderful experiences with cast members:

1 - A friendly CM at Hollywood & Vine (character breakfast) unexpectedly gifted the family with a set of use-anytime paper Fastpasses, in honor of my 5-year-old nephew's first visit (he had shared that fact as they chatted).

2 - Midway through their stay, a CM at Art of Animation gave the family a free upgrade from the Little Mermaid standard rooms to a Cars Family Suite, for no reason other than that my BIL and nephew visited the front desk and asked politely.

3 - My nephew's sole desire at WDW was to "fight Darth Vader" at HS. They got there first thing and signed him right up, but when the time came for him to fight the Dark Side, he was ushered to a lower stage to fight the Seventh Sister ("Who?" "Exactly."). He was so visibly distraught that a CM approached the family after the show, and when they learned that he'd spent months dreaming of fighting Darth Vader, they signed him up to do so at another show, two days later, when they planned to visit HS again. Sure enough, when they showed up for that show, my nephew's name was already on the list -- with a notation that he be placed in the Darth Vader group!

All of these CMs went way above-and-beyond the call of duty, for no reason other than to make my sister's family's visit more amazing and make a little boy's dream come true. The family has been raving about how great these CMs -- and all of the CMs they encountered -- were, ever since they got back. I know there are bad apples out there and that overall, customer service appears to have diminished, but at least in this case, they were spectacular.

She's one of the Sith Inquisitors from Star Wars: Rebels. Voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar, her big shtick is her use of miniature recon drones, like the ones used in the Battle of Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back. She was killed by Darth Maul in the Season Two finale. :bookworm:

Recently, no because I have not been in about a year. However, we always run into extremely helpful and friendly CMs. We have never run into a bad one, just less engaging than the extraordinary ones.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
Mr. John in Tomorrowland. I've never been anywhere where I've actively sought out the same worker/CM. John is the standard by which ALL theme park employees should strive to be at. I know you guys know who I'm talking about!

I used to work with that guy. He has the great quality of not taking himself too seriously, but taking the job seriously. The prefect combination.

Almost 3 years ago, if this qualifies as lately, we took our elderly (85 & 90) moms to WDW to celebrate their birthdays. At the Flame Tree, 2 very sweet young lady CMs noticed their tags and, after chatting with us for a while, brought our moms cupcakes with candles! I have no idea where they got them, but our moms were thrilled. I filled out a compliment form at guest relations on the way out. Overall, we find the CMs at WDW to be very friendly.

Well, this story may be kind of long but I will try and tell the whole story in as few of words as possible. There are really two parts to this story.

First part of the story: When my family and I used to live in Massachusetts and my son was only 3 years old (he is 21 now), we met a manager at a Disney Store in a mall who we became pretty good friends with for the next decade. Eventually, we moved down to Orlando which we had been planning to do for quite some time, leaving our friend behind. No more than a month later, he moved down to Orlando too and after managing a Disney Store in the area he landed a position at Epcot. For the next few years, he moved up the ranks fairly quickly to a position that utilized his Accountant training. It had something to do with daily revenue for the F&W Festival.

Second part of the story: Since we moved to Orlando, my family and I have always been AP holders. Since we visit the Parks often, some CMs take notice of that and we often take time to chat with them as long as we're not holding other guests from getting help. Often times we would all order Citrus Swirls from the Sunshine Tree Terrace, and one particular CM working there from California on the CP was particularly friendly. We would always take the time to swing by to at least say "hi" even if we didn't plan on getting a Citrus Swirl. There was never a time when she wasn't happy. After a few months, she told us that she was being transferred to Epcot to work serving beer at the F&W Festival. We told her that she may run into a good friend of ours (from the first part of the story) and that she would probably really like working with him. When we told her his name, she said she had already met him. Not long after that, we never saw her again. We don't go to Epcot very often because…well, need I say more. Twenty years ago we LOVED it…not so much anymore.

Now to put the two parts together: We always had a hard time getting together with our friend from MA, but about a year had gone by and we received a card from him with a California address. He had moved out there without telling us! He wanted to tell us in person but we just never could find the time where we were both available. A few weeks after that, we received a very nice, hand written letter from the CM from California. She had discovered that our friend had moved to California, her home state, and she got our names and address from him. We had never told her our names so it was an absolute total surprise! For a CM that we had only spoken to about a dozen times to take the time to find out our names, address and then write a hand written letter meant more to us then you could ever imagine! And her main reason writing us was because she simply didn't get the chance to say "Goodbye."

We have met many wonderful CMs over the years and hope to meet many, many more. This is what really makes our visits to the Parks special.

Nice story. :) I have to admit I was expecting the two CMs to have gotten married. LOL (the hopeless romantic in me, I guess!)

My best friend and I had a reservation at Kona in the Polynesian one night for dinner. We were staying at port Orleans French quarter and as soon as it was time to go, it started pouring. It was either sit in our hotel room, or brave it out to the bus, then to the monorail, in the downpour. We go out to the MK bus and we are the only two crazy souls to board. The bus driver, Ron, asks if we really intend to go to magic kingdom in this weather. We explained our dilemma and he decides to call his supervisor to see if he can drop us off right at the Polynesian. We ended up getting straight to the door service. It was such a nice gesture that I will forever remember. It's always the little things that matter most.

During our last trip, we had dinner at Trails End. We immediately recognized we had the same server as our last 2 visits to the restaurant. He's always provided us great service! What absolutely shocked us was that He remembered us! He knew what state we were from and where we had sat at our last visit to the restaurant. He even recalled some of our conversation from a visit 2 times ago which was a year prior! He brought us out a special dessert and got permission to sit down with us during his break. We took photos and learned about his history with Disney and others in his family that also work at WDW. I emailed Guest Relations when we returned home and requested he be recognized in some way for the amazing service he consistently provides. I did receive a response and hope they follow through.

I can't say this was necessarily a stellar experience for myself but these four Cast Members were certainly keeping these several guests happy and safe! The mother was on the other side of the railing while they tried to wonder off into traffic around the hub and these caring Cast Members stayed by their side until they were reunited with Mom.

No, when I went to WDW a few months ago, all of the cast members looked miserable. This includes college-age CMs, as well as older CMs. The only ones that didn't look like this were a group a trainees who were "earning their ears." It was their first day in the park, and they were conducting their initial park orientation.

I have always enjoyed the cast members though it has been a few years since I have visited.

1) We took the SEGWAY tour at FortWilderness Campground. We arrived early and signed in and was talking with the CM there. There was a man and wife sitting quietly and we were chatting with the CM and the guests. They had the new model Segways and the CM asked if I wanted to see a new feature. As I have an older Segway at home I said sure. He did something to it and stepped back. Then he said "ok, try to move it". When I lifted the handle it began to beep and when I tried to pull it away from the wall, It would power up and fight me, trying to go toward the wall. I reversed my motion and it would go the opposite way. For such a light device, It put up a heck of a fight. The Guests were sitting and laughing pretty hard as was the cast member. He had activated the security system on the Segway which at the time was a new feature.. Pretty neat.

2) We had breakfast at the restaurant in Fortwilderness next door to the building where the Whoop Dee Doo show is. It was quite busy and the CM's are moving about. This one CM, a mid aged gentleman was waiting on the table behind us and he seemed quite jovial and enjoyed talking and telling jokes as he served. I couldn't help but hear HIS rendition of a joke he was telling a family with their young son. It was a version of "how do you catch an elephant"... Do you know the real version?
I heard him give the CLEAN punch line and I kind of laughed. as he turned I leaned toward him, he asked if he could help me, and I told him I overheard his "catch an elephant" joke and that I seem to remember a slightly different punch line. He gave a big smile and said, " This is Disney World, and we tell happy jokes." He then ran off to continues his duties.

3) We had a breakfast reservation onboard the EMPRESS LILLY, this is when she REALLY WAS THE EMPRESS LILLY.
We were seated and an Asian woman and her daughter were seated at the table next to us. We chatted breifly and the daughter mentioned that MOM flew in from Japan.
We were having breakfast and wouldn't you know it, the Chractors show up. They come to our table and we get a hello then they headed for the table next to us with the Asian MOM and daughter. They were excited and the daughter asked if we would take a picture of them with the charactors, I think it was Mickey. I was glad to see mom had a DIsney Moment with her daughter.

4) Scheduled Dinner in Liberty Square in the Liberty Tree Tavern. They still had charactor visits then. Dinner started and at some point CHIP shows up, or was it DALE? Well I figured I would reverse the game so I said " I have seen that Face, I know it well, IT's DARK WING DUCK". Boy he crossed his arms and started that foot hitting the floor. lol. cute. Then he proceeds to tell us HE was the cook for our meal, then he trots off to the next table. I figure that was it for the charactors when here comes MINNIE. She was amusing and when I told her CHIP cooked our dinner, she jumped back and shook her head NO. and pointed to herself saying SHE cooked our dinner...She waves good by and had to trot off...
Its fun when they immerse you in fanasy isn't it???

5) We had a late show and was using the DISNEY Transport Buses. We had to connect at Wilderness Lodge and it was really late. We ended up having to wait with another couple and after awhile we decided to call the desk. They said the buses were going back to the garage but to stay put and we would get a ride back to the camp ground.
.. So a Disney van shows up and we all get inside and tell where we all need to go.

The other couple was dropped off first and we headed to Fort Wilderness. They took the back roads and we ended up by the boat dock at Fort Wilderness. We decided to get off there and walk it as we were about half a mile down the road. I don't remember why we come up with that idea but it was late and a nice night.

Just as we began to start walking, A DISNEY Transport Bus shows up, coming from the direction we needed to go. The bus stopped and I recognized the driver right off. He drives the route and we had chatted in the past. He asked if we needed a ride and we told him we were going to loop 18. He told us to get inside. Now, if you have never seen one of these big ole buses do a 3 point turn around, this is what he did. I watched as he took off and dropped us at the loop and with a big smile he says to enjoy our stay at Disney and we thanked him repeatedly... lolol

6) Not so much a big deal but....
We were in the Magic Kingdom for a few hours already and it was a hot day. These days if you wanted to have lunch at the Castle you had to go to the castle and make reservations INSIDE the waiting area. I don't recall why we went there maybe we needed to confirm reservations. So we did what we needed to do and I was kind of hot from the heat of the day so I just sort of moved around toward the exit when here comes a charactor in a green lizard sort of costume. He is heading into the castle and toward the waiting room and I just automatically said "Hey how are ya'. I wasn't thinking when I said it, it was hot and I was just moving and responding to my surroundings. I DID A COMPLETE STOP when the Cast member in the costume said " HOW ARE YA DOING? " plainly and with a happy voice as he kept trotting past and into the waiting room.....
I stood there for a moment thinking, hmmm I don't think I was supposed to get a response and then I chuckled as I continued into fantasy land.

7) We were waiting to get into the WHOOP DEE DOO REVIEW at Fort Wilderness. This has become an EVERY VISIT EVENT. lol.
So as we are waiting in line outside, a woman and her two teen kids are behind us and they are giggling and carrying on. I said hi and we chatted a bit and the kids told me that MOM is a super HUGE fan of one of the Cast members, the woman with the silver hair and real high voice. I knew exactly who they were talking about because I like this charactors act also.
... As the lines were growing for the show, one of the CM's stepped out and I heard this MOM say in an excited voice " THERE SHE IS ". I look up and it was THAT CM that she was talking about. The CM stepped out, looked around and then went back inside.
... You have no idea where this is going.

So time goes by and they open the doors, we all file up to the door, they confirm our reservations and we are walked to lower level tables. AS I am looking around I see this MOM and her teens were seated right behind us.
... so the show begins and we are having a great time and they get to the part where the CMs come down and say howdy to the Guests. I seem to recall we were eating so I didn't pay a lot of attention to what was going on. It had been a few minutes and I knew that the meet and greet was just about over when I felt a tap on my shoulder. It was THAT CM from the show, the one this lady really enjoys. The CM was really nice and started talking and I stopped her. I told her that as excited I was to meet her for the first time, " I couldn't believe I was saying this.......", I leaned over to her, I told her to look over her shoulder toward the table behind us. She did, as she did this I explained that this lady is a HUGE fan of her charactor and she really would love to have you go over and say hello. The CM looked at me, gave me a huge smile and said, well lets see what we can do for her. She thanked me, And off she went.
.. OH MAN, MOM and the kids were all smiles, the CM got in pictures with MOM and the kids and they talked about it for the rest of the show.
.. I don't get to help make the magic very often and this was my chance to help spread the Pixie Dust, AND I USED DOUBLE HELPINGS, LOLOLOLOLOL.

8) We were staying at the Fort Wilderness Campgrounds. The next day we had a Disney Tour of the Magic Of our Steam Trains.. You have to get up early for this one since the TOUR is BEFORE the trains are put into service for transporting Guests to their favorite lands in the Park. HOWEVER, the bus service is not running yet. We drove over to the CONTEMPORARY and parked and went up to the MONORAIL landing. The monorail was sitting there and I thought we would have no problem to be on time for the Tour. The Cast member come up and told us the Monorails were not running yet. We explained that we had to be at the Magic Kingdom by a certain time for the TOUR. We were told to wait a minute and the cast members were talking. We were escorted to the front of the Monorail to ride with the Pilot ( Still available at this time ) and after a short wait, I am guessing all the monorails on the track at the resorts had to leap frog to the next resorts to let us pass, we took off headed for the Magic Kingdom. When we arrived at the Magic Kingdom, the Pilot gave us one of those Monorail Pilot Cards, she gave us a huge smile and said to have a great day here at Disney World. Off we went and made it to the tour.

I can vouch that your experience at the parks is entirely enlightened when you have a good experience with a Castmember. I like the idea of having ThankYou cards to give the CM's as well. I don't think they get enough credit, well the good ones. And I do enjoy their interaction with us.

I had a CM at the christmas shop in Disney springs notice my husband and I had on our honeymoon pins (this was Sept 2013). He was sitting at a little corner desk and saw us browsing. He asked us if we needed help with anything and we said we were just looking around and were hoping to find an ornament to put on our Xmas tree since it would be our first Xmas married. He told us to give him about 10 minutes and come find him again. We went around and browsed some more and had no idea what he was gonna do. When we returned he had two more of those "happily ever after" pins and he was decorating them with our names, wedding date, and a Mickey outline. It was something so simple, but it was nice of him. We still have those pins 3 years later. We added string to it so we could hang it to our tree. :)

Last week we were seated and waiting for Fantasmic to start when a guest behind us tripped with a full cup of beer and dumped it on the back of my young son's shirt. I went to the top of the seating area to ask a CM the fastest way to the closest gift shop and why I needed to quickly buy my little guy a fresh shirt.

She sent me to another CM nearby who walked both my son and I through a back way to the ToT gift shop and told him to pick a shirt for free. They were incredibly kind and provided a wonderful example of the power of kindness for my 8 year old son. It made a huge impression on him.

He changed his shirt in the closest restroom and the CM walked us back up the hill. We were back in our seats 5 minutes before the performance began. This was just one of the great CM interactions we had during our recent trip.
