Has anyone ever said, "We can't afford it because we're going to Disney World"?

My husband just told me today that we can't afford a particular toy that our son wanted "because we're going to Disney World". I know we're trying to save money, but my goodness!

Yep, I've had that happen before. When I know the family and I are saving to make a trip to Disney I usually neglect my online buying abilities.

I don't think of it as "we can't afford it because we're going to WDW". No, it's a choice. Which would you rather have? Toy now or cool toy at WDW? Go out to eat tonight or go to an extra sit-down on vacation? Prioritizing is a very good way to put it. In the end, I can *afford* most anything I want. But, do I want that something on a whim more than extra spending money on vacation?

All the time. My daughters having been hearing me say this for the last few months. They each have their own spending money for Disney, and if they really want something that bad before we go in August they are welcome to use their own money. Sometimes I feel bad saying no about certain things, but I look at it as they are going to Disney and when many others can not.

Not for WDW specifically, but we had an entire year of belt-tightening several years ago in order to save up for Disney Cruise Line's first Mediterranean itinerary (at the time, we never figured they would ever do another one). I remember my parents had talked about helping me buy my first car, but once the cruise option came up, they sat me down and told me I would have to decide. I went with the cruise. :D

I have said it, but can handle it pretty well for everything minus the girls. All I can say is that surprise trips make this even more difficult. Last summer's surprise trip was easier...the girls knew we were going someplace fun and it was a BIG thing. So, even though they didn't know what, they knew it was great and were OK with my frugal approach. This time they just think we're driving to S. Florida to see grandma and grandpa for Thanksgiving and meet their new cousin. In light of this, they both have been asking for all kinds of things and neither can know that the constant "no" is b/c I am surprising them w/another magical trip to WDW. Thankfully, begging to return to WDW is one of the things that comes up...and with that...I can say "we will at some point, I just don't know when."

Beyond this, I'm trying to make my purchases be things for the trip. i.e. DD5's bday presents will be trip related, but not obvious things...Halloween costumes will double as costumes for BBB...and my new vehicle (initially planned on getting after the trip) will just save us in rental car costs or air travel.

I don't necessarily say we can't do something because we are going to Disney, but rather point out all of the cost saving measures we take that allows us extra cash to go to Disney - such as packing a lunch for work, taking out DVDs from the library instead of buying, using coupons to stock up when there are sales, and so on. The little things add up and I want my kids to understand and appreciate that.

All the time. I'm not independently wealthy. And as far as I know I do not have any insanely rich relatives who want to leave their fortune to me. So until that happens gotta cut out some things to do other things we want more.

My Xbox 360 got the ring of death right before it was time to leave. I decided to withhold shelling out the $140 to fix it until after the trip and a few paychecks later. That $140 would have had to come from my Epcot money. Though the Skyrim withdrawal is getting to me now I'm home and haven't had time to get to Gamestop.

um, Disney's souvenirs are expensive so it's not like it's an irrational concern. my parents have denied me certain things and told me to save my money because of our plans to go to Disney. and my Disney-insane best friend has saved her money every single plans to Disney she has. it happens ya know.
