Has anyone ever said, "We can't afford it because we're going to Disney World"?

We all have different levels of income and we all have to make decisions on how to spend that income. If going out to dinner or buying a t-shirt is going to impact your Disney vacation then maybe you need to rethink staying at a deluxe resort as opposed to a moderate. (that isn't directed at anyone btw) Maybe, you need to take a shorter vacation or not go every year. We decided long ago that travel, and Disney in particular, was important to us. So, we structured our budget to take that into account. As others have said we all need to set our priorities.

Yep,Us also,we do Disney every two years, well since 2004,and always stay in mods even tho this year we looked at WL but to be honest,we couldn't justify paying the extra bucks for 14 nights.:)

We only go to the wolrld every three to four years so we save up for awhile to finance the trip. As a result we don't feel the pinch quite as much when it comes time to pay the final bill.

yeah... all the time. I have friends with deep pockets, whenever people throw out the idea of heading to dinner to catch up I know it means top tier restaurants, ie I'll be throwing in 150 for just myself. Ive passed on those dinners because I had an upcoming trip to the world.

My husband just told me today that we can't afford a particular toy that our son wanted "because we're going to Disney World". I know we're trying to save money, but my goodness!

Almost every day around here! We are working hard and saving to pay for this trip, and in doing so we are giving up other extra's in our life.

I don't think of it as "we can't afford it because we're going to WDW". No, it's a choice. Which would you rather have? Toy now or cool toy at WDW? Go out to eat tonight or go to an extra sit-down on vacation? Prioritizing is a very good way to put it. In the end, I can *afford* most anything I want. But, do I want that something on a whim more than extra spending money on vacation?

This!! Thats exactly what it is.. My kids wanted to go to 6 Flags ( we used to have season passes).. I told them one day of 6 flags or an extra night/day in disney with an extra sit down meal.. they learn how to prioritize fast with this logic.

I think that this is a wonderful opportunity to give your children the lifeskill of being able to budget and prioritze. Yes, I think we would all like to have it all, but then there is reality. So a give and take on purchasing items verses saving for a trip can be a real learning experience. I think it is important that children learn that money does not grow on trees and that there is a bottom to parents pocketbooks. I know for my kids growing up did they remember all the toys or do they remember family outings? I would dare say that they would both tell you that family outings stick out in their minds more than a toy, that probably they lost interest in after a few months.
Just a matter of priorities for us. Luckily, DH and I usually take turns on such things, so one of us is somewhat sane when the other is looking at something to purchase that we really don't need.

Yep... this, exactly!! When my son was younger I mean 4 or 5, the fact that we were going to Disney, helped me to show him the value of a dollar, believe it or not. The *you can get 2 video games and a new bike OR go to Disney* choice was always given to him. I totally agree, it comes down to one's priorities, at any age

All the time. My daughters having been hearing me say this for the last few months. They each have their own spending money for Disney, and if they really want something that bad before we go in August they are welcome to use their own money. Sometimes I feel bad saying no about certain things, but I look at it as they are going to Disney and when many others can not.
Exactly! You "hit the nail right on the head!".:D

um, Disney's souvenirs are expensive so it's not like it's an irrational concern. my parents have denied me certain things and told me to save my money because of our plans to go to Disney. and my Disney-insane best friend has saved her money every single plans to Disney she has. it happens ya know.
I love the name "Disney-insane".:D

Depends on how much the toy was!:)
He wanted Pokemon cards and Monsumo game stuff. I guess it'd be around 50$ or so... I guess I made a boo-boo my not letting my hubby know that I was going to buy my son these two things (I told him next payday),:( I did have it on the calendar, but sometimes you forget to look at it. Their birthday is July 27 (twins) and I told their Grandma that she could get them those toys if she wanted. (She always asks what to get them). I also said we'd go to Chuck E Cheese for their birthday, but that may have to change as well. I do feel like a very bad Mom, but I try to remind them that we are going to Disney in 85 days (:)) and that we'll get them that bow and arrow (hopefully if they have them to sell) @ Disney.

I totally see your point! This year is our 15th anniversary, and we wanted to maybe go to Hawaii, but not w/ 2 8 yr old boys! So, I told my hubby I'd like to stay @ the POLY. We usually go for 6 nights/7days and we drive. It has been a yearly trip since 2007 (except 2008), and we have stayed @ value or mods, except last year we stayed @ WL (not too expensive). I better enjoy this one because this may be our last for a while!:(

I tell my daughter she can't get stuff every day now because we are saving money for Disney in August. Then she complains that she never gets to do anything. She is six years old and she has been to Disneyworld 7 times already, this will be her 8th trip. It is the only vacation place we go to now. Her kindergarten teacher called her Disney Girl! I try to tell her how lucky she is that her parents enjoy Disney as much as we do. If we lived in Florida we'd be there weekly, but living in New Jersey it's all about timing.

agreed... for me, wdw is therapuetic... so, i try to go once a year. to do this i save, save and save. sure, there are some things that i'll have to say no to. however, i know how important wdw is to me. i've been crunching the #'s in all kinds of ways to figure out the best way to go to disney without having to spend a ton of money for the trip, so that i don't have to live the rest of the year on nothing.
