Has a tornado ever been spotted in Disney World?

Quickly! I'm sure someone can explain better. All parks have park wide PA available. CMs have radios and are (or should be) fluent in all evac procedures.
Was wondering about this too. It's interesting. Live in the Midwest so funnel clouds are kind of a dime a dozen... As bad as it is, we generally don't go into "duck and cover" mode even if the sirens are sounding. (Note we do eventually go down if it looks bad bad). Closest a tornado had ever been to our house was 3 miles. Can still remember the green sky from all the grass the tornado had sucked up. Sorry, tangent!

Anyways... I know there really isn't ba "basement" to the Magic Kingdom considering that the utilidor level is technically the first floor... But is it actually wise to send everyone fleeing out when a funnel cloud is present? Doesn't that leave everyone exposed should the tornado actually touch down? Just interesting to think about.

We were in MK one summer , 2010 I believe in June, and the storm was horrible! A tornado warning was in the area and most folks had left the park. We were waiting it out under the shelter by the Dole Whip area. We asked a CM, and he did say that they would take everyone down underground if an actual tornado hit. I am not sure if he was serious or kidding.

We just had one come through a few miles from our house 2 nights ago. We get 2 or 3 close calls a year up here in GA it seems.

The utilidors would function the same way a basement would, since they're still below grade, but my guess is Disney isn't going to open those up to the public. I'd love to know where they'd send people during an emergency evac - I think I'm heading for Cinderella Castle if I see a funnel cloud in MK

He was serious. In the MK, areas of the utilidors are designated shelters. A lot of the main show building space in Epcot is the same ( Energys main theatres, inside Test Track, Imaginations ride space, Innoventions basements, Showcase theatres and the like) and DHS has space like GMR, towers interior, Idol etc, and DAK has ITTBAB, Dinosaur ride area, and I'd imagine other areas. All are strengthened to withstand all but a direct hit.

We saw one in 99, it was scary because we were driving from a waterpark back to the hotel, it knocked down a few trees I think, but before I knew it, it was over and they had everything cleaned up by the next day, maybe even that night! Disney is quick!

Back in May 2011 there was a tornadic supercell near EPCOT complete with strong rotation and the sky going green, Saw it and started to head for shelter (DW and I are both Skywarn members). It broke up but heard later on news that windshear caused it to break up fortunately for everyone in the EPCOT area

Nothing like being in a giant fiberglass building for a tornado!

I almost forgot, back in 1998 we had a whopping storm come thru one night. I remember getting off of Spaceship Earth and they closed the mini simulators they used to have in the origional Global Neighborhood because of the lightning storms. When we got back to the condo the wind picked up and the patio furniture was blowing around the porch and the screen door kept on opening which I thought was the funniest thing at the time. The next morning we found out that theyre was a was a tornado across Orange Lake resorts lake on Bronson. Theyre was a campground on that side and some homes that got destroyed.

Was it May 27 by chance? If so I was there and it was very, very bad. We had just checked in at CSR and avoided about 100 lightening strikes on our way to our room

Exactly! Can't you just see flying around like Dorothy in Cinderella Castle? Seriously, tho the main structure is reinforced concrete and structural steel with some areas of the facade made out of fiberglass. That bad boy's going nowhere unless it takes a direct hit.

No, but I saw one in Universal! :p

Never been in one, but boy... after standing through that Uni attraction, Twister (pretty thrilling), knowing it's still not nearly as frightening as the real deal, I am glad I live where I do and don't have to worry about them hitting down on my house.
