The hand print ceremonies still happen, however Disney is not allowed to actually place them in the GMR courtyard. It's kind of a long story, but a few years back the real Chinese Theater was taken over by a different company which wanted the handprint ceremony to be exclusive to the real theater. This also ties in to why the Hat is placed where it is.

i don't think it was ever done there. thats just a replica of the theater thats in california.
All of the handprints in the GMR courtyard are real and were done exclusively for Disney. Several even have Hidden Mickey's in them that were put in by the celebrities while they were signing their tablet.

They are real, I've seen pictures somewhere of them being done at MGM. I love seeing them when I go, especially Jim Henson's and Kermits! Through lots of reading, I've come to understand why the Theater is covered by the hat and why they can't do any more hand/foot prints....but no matter how legit the explanation, I still find it sad and disappointing because they had such a cool thing going on with the theater at MGM.

Don't know if it's true or not but I heard that some celebrities were invited to stay several days and participated in handprint ceremonies over the course of there stay so that there several sets of the handprints but only one placed out in front of GMR.

The one I saw wasnt done in the ground where it was to be placed either, it was done on a wooden box form up on a table right where the big hat is now.

Can anyone tell me where I can find info on why the hat needs to be there? I hear people say this, but never knew why.
Thanks

There is a bunch of info on the hat inside this thread, you have to weed through the wand stuff, but the hat's in there a bunch.

Here is a quote from that thread from Lee who is very reputable:

The hat was indeed built to hide the theatre. No doubt.

The reason is that they wanted every park to have a visible icon like the Castle, SSE, and Tree. Unfortunately, most people thought of the theatre as the icon for the Studios. That's a problem since Disney doesn't own the design of the theatre. It was built by permission of the real theatre's owners, and they never licensed the use of it as a marketing icon for the park.
Originally, Disney wanted the Earful Tower to be the icon...but due to it's position backstage where it isn't very easily seen or photographed by guests...it didn't work out as well as they had hoped.
So...they needed a new icon in a visible spot....and they got one.

Simple as that. The hat ain't moving.

There also handprints tiles in the entrance to Theatre of the Stars where they hold BatB. James Doohan is up there which is one of the most memorable to me.
