Last week I was at the VMCP on Thursday night when I look up and see a celebrity(Mick Foley, for those who ever watched wrestling) signing autographs for a few kids in the line in front of him. He couldn't have been more polite and nice to the family. Unfortunately once we got to the front of the line the CM was having a bad day. I was within 5-10 feet of the whole situation as we were right behind him in line, so what I heard is exactly what happened.
As we approached the CM at load who was asking for guests in the party, the CM asked if there was a party of 3. The family had 4 and Mick had himself and his 3 kids, so he sent his 3 kids forward so he could ride with the kids of the family and be in their photo. After his kids were on the way the CM then told the family of 4 to sit in their rows and told Mick he needed to stand off to the side since he was by himself. At this point he mentioned to the CM that the family wanted to ride with him(still hadn't played the "I'm a celebrity card"). After the CM again stated he needed to stand aside, he finally said, "They are fans of mine, I was a professional wrestler, and they'd like me to ride with them to be in a photo". At this point the CM pointed right to the Exit door and said "If you don't want to ride there is the exit". Mick again said, "They wanted me to ride with them(points to the family and they all nod yes)" again the CM wanted nothing to do with it, still motioning toward the door... At this point I could tell the CM was more about having control than making the day magical for someone else, and I even stepped in and pointed out he just wanted to ride with the kids.. the CM had none of it and away the family went.
Fortunately for the family, Mick is a stand up guy and when we pulled into the unload area he asked the family to stay around and asked our family to stay around as well(to clarify what was being said to Mick after he wanted to ride with the family). He asked to speak with a manager and explained the situation to the manager and when the manager asked what he could do to help, Mick said, let us ride again so the kid can get a photo riding the ride with me as he wanted.
I know often we hear about CM's going above and beyond, but sometimes they have a let down, and I was just happy to see someone like Mick go out of his way to help make the day for a family when some of the Disney Magic wasn't quite working as it should have.
I think the CM may have forgotten the old quote "It's not the magic that makes it work, it's the work that makes the magic."
I happen to have someone in my family who is even more well known than Mick, so seeing him go out of his way to fix someone elses shortcomings definitely were not unnoticed. Just thought some people may want to hear this story about a guy who goes to Magic Kingdom quite often with his kids, since to me it showed many times the guests make the magic for others..
