I don't necessarily think this is true. I think being familiar or being a fan of the IP will improve the experience but not liking or caring about the IP won't detract from the experience. Star Wars and Avatar are two franchises I've never really cared about but I loved the lands and rides that are associated to both franchises.

I'm not suggesting it will always detract from the experience (it definitely won't), but it absolutely can in some instances. Not that the Little Mermaid ride is very good to begin with, but if you'd never seen the movie and don't care about the characters at all, there's basically nothing there to interest you. Frozen Ever After is another good example of this. It's also true of a ride like Spaceship Earth -- some people think it's boring because they aren't interested in history.

The better a ride is, the less likely it is that it will matter, but I think it can still have an effect -- in fact, @ToTBellHop said exactly that above, that because he wasn't interested in Cars it affected his enjoyment of RSR.

Man that is great news! My family and I are heading down starting June 11th for a week. It sounds like if everything goes to plan this might be open. Once we heard "Summer Opening" for the ride we all were crossing our fingers.
We just pushed ours from early June to Aug. in hopes it’s open. DH didn’t want to risk it.

ive never seen cars and have no attachment to it but carsland is fantastic and RSR is a masterpiece of a ride

Which definitely seems to be the standard reaction to it!

Again, I'm not suggesting that not caring about an IP automatically means you'll like a ride less. It's simply a factor that could make that happen. The better the ride is, the less likely it will matter, though.

Like the IP or not, Cars Land was very well done.

I can't shake the feeling that we're going to be let down by this, for the amount of money being spent on it. It doesn't even have any rock work factoring into the price tag. There needs to be some serious AA and set pieces within the ride itself, or else unthemed big blue boxes are far more costly than any of us realized.

As long as it’s a fun, enjoyable rollercoaster with a cool Guardians story with that signature music it’s going to be hard for this to be letting me down. Obviously, throw in some cool preshow effects as well as on ride effects and this could be a great addition that EPCOT sorely needs.

Mission Breakout was done cheaply and still turned out pretty well. Interested to see what they do with a budget of this scale.

Guests should not really care how much a ride costs. Or even know. The question is, “is this a worthwhile addition that adds enjoyment to my visit?”

Yeah, the basic ingredients are too good to mess up.
Sure, some of those people who believe this IP doesn't belong in Epcot would likely hate it no matter how well it turns out.
But it's a big indoor coaster, who's coaster fun will be at least as much fun as any other indoor coaster.
On top of that will be a great queue, backward launch, effects, great music... The ride's going to be a win.

I agree to the extent that if you're enjoying a ride, it's nonsensical to think "Well, it cost $300 million, though... this only feels like $200 million worth of enjoyment. I should be getting 50% more enjoyment than I am". It definitely has an overall effect on the parks and what gets built, though.

I don’t honestly think we’d get more rides if this cost half as much, though. That money would go to a Disney+ show or something. But I understand your point that there is some unquantifiable impact on the parks. This ride costs as much as half a theme park should cost.

Maybe not with this project since it’s technically separate from Evolving EPCOT, but better cost control would have enabled the third rides in Pandora and Galaxy’s Edge to survive.

Theoretically. Or they would have just budgeted even less. Things are always cut, unfortunately. Someone always says, “do we really need that???”
