Great Movie Ride or Old-school movie ride?

The problem with the Great Movie Ride...is that all of the animatronics are still plasticky. You can TELL they aren't real. (notable exceptions being the Tin Man and the Alien. For obvious reasons)
Heck, we've got Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush in Pirates of the Caribbean now, and they are so realistic that one could almost swear that they are live actors amidst the more cartoonish Marc Davis pirates.

Also, the 3D "hologram" of Johnny Depp that now appears at the Jack Sparrow attraction...imagine just how awesome the GMR could be if they plussed it like that.

EDIT -- As for the final reel...what if they were to surround the theater with a Circlevision set up and have the cars on a rotating carousel akin to Universe of Energy?
AND....Digital Surround Sound!

Replace a few scenes. Star Wars, Forrest Gump, Toy Story (first CGI film) and Godfather need to be in there

I think there may be a problem with getting approval for the likenesses of the actors. I remember reading that Disney had to get permission to represent them in the ride and this was back in '89. The look of those animatronics is obviously still accurate to the original specs. I think if they were to actually update them to be more realistic, they might need to go to the hassle of getting approval again. If that was the case, do you think they'd want to do that or simply demolish everything and replace the detailed sets and animatronics with screens?

Personally, I love the ride. It's one of the only Hollywood Studios rides that my grandmother can go on (and she loves the ride for the nostalgia). Most of the movies like Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, Raiders, and Alien are still considered to be some of the greatest movies of all time. I really don't want Disney to remove the classics for Avatar and Cars. In my opinion, GMR might as well be the Spaceship Earth of Hollywood Studios (essentially the ride that best represents the park's main theme). However if they did close it, I would assume they would want to put in a new ride rather than updating an old one. Renovations are like the plague for TDO.

Yes, I remember a Jim Hill article on the subject. Lee Marvin was originally supposed to be on a horse next to the saloon as from Cat Ballou. His family put the brakes on it when they realized that Disney wanted to use his comical drunken sharpshooter character Kid Shelleen, drunkenly snoozing against the wall. (despite the fact that it was this role that landed Marvin the Oscar)

So desperate for a quick replacement, Disney went to Clint Eastwood, and the rest is history.

But...would WDW necessarily need to re-negotiate contracts with the actors/agents/families who are already represented, just for a skin job?

I love The Great Movie Ride. I like the fact that this ride has different, non-Disney, films in it. While some scenes could be deleted, it's still a nice ride in my opinion. It just needs some upgrading. The one thing I do not want changed would be in the film clip collection at the end of the ride. During that one of the songs they play is "The Entertainer." I don't know why, but I love that song and it feels like classic Disney to me, mainly because of that ride. Every time I hear that song I think of the GMR. It's nostalgia, I know.

Does anyone know if they still run the western scene? I was there a few weeks ago and asked the CM if they were currently running it and he said "Sorry, we don't run that scene anymore". I didn't have a chance to clarify if he meant just that day or that the scene was permanently retired.
They only run the bandit scene if they are using both cars. Only the first car gets to see that scene. We always ask to wait and get in the first car because we were so tired of being in the back car and only seeing the gangster scene. This is one ride where it's better if it's crowded.

Because Forrest Gump is one of the most overrated pieces of bull excrement ever released in theaters, second only to Avatar.

If you want Tom Hanks in there, make it a GOOD Tom Hanks movie. Saving Private Ryan. or something.

And if you want Robert Zemeckis....I think we all know what the only real answer is.

They already have the props in storage from when the Acme warehouse was at the end of the Backstage Tour, and I think the Dipmobile and steamroller could be salvaged from the Boneyard and fixed back up to snuff.

Get DHS back to its roots!

Cast Away is another Tom Hanks movie that I enjoyed. Along with one of my all-time favorite movies, Apollo 13.
