Books are the only pieces of merchandise that I buy when I go to Disneyland. I’d love to see a bookstore at DTD.

I like bookstores, but I've gotten so used to getting huge discounts on them from Amazon, etc that it's really hard for me to pay full price for them in a store.

Having grown up spending every weekend visiting bookstores (and then working in one for many years), I think their near-extinction is very sad. There is nothing quite like wandering through a bookstore and discovering something new and fascinating purely by chance. That said, I completely understand what happened; non-discounted books were simply getting ridiculously expensive. Who wants to pay thirty or forty bucks for a novel?

The independent bookstore I worked at was killed by Costco and Borders (Amazon was looming). We literally could not even buy a new bestseller *wholesale* for the slashed price Costco was charging for the same title at its stores, and Borders lured away even our best customers with its huge inventory, cafe and ability to match our special-order services.

And then, shortly after our store went belly-up, Amazon killed Borders.

Bookstores were magical places. God bless the few that are hanging in there.

I did some digging, for those keeping score at home...

Earl of Sandwich started most of their employees off at $11.75 per hour, just above California minimum wage. Earl of Sandwich is owned by the restaurant division of Earl Corporation, named after owner Robert Earl. Mr. Earl also owns and operates a few hundred other restaurants around the world; Planet Hollywood, Buca di Beppo, Bubba Gump Shrimp, Hard Rock Cafe, in addition to owning a professional soccer team in England, other real estate investments, etc.

Robert Earl currently has a net worth of $240 Million.
Bob Iger currently has a net worth of $100 Million.

>>The president of the 32-restaurant Earl of Sandwich chain was in Anaheim Monday overseeing the opening day. Jim Stanley said it was a “groundswell of support” from loyal customers and Disneyland cast members that the Anaheim branch reopened.

Stanley said that the company had been talking to Disney about possibly opening up a pop-up restaurant on the site and perhaps later open in the new hotel when they got a call asking if they’d be interested in reopening their former store in the same location. Luckily, he said, the only fixtures that had been removed were the picnic tables on the patio, with everything else still intact.

“We hadn’t taken the signage down, even though Disney wanted us to,” Stanley said.

The Anaheim store was historically the second-highest-grossing in the chain, after the flagship store at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World, he said. The location served an average 1,500-2,000 people per day, up to 3,000 on the busiest days. He estimated some 65 percent of the Anaheim location’s new staff members were actually returnees from the previous run.

Edvin Merida of Garden Grove was among the employees who chose to return after the summer hiatus. He works mornings.

“As soon as they called me, I wanted to come back,” Merida said. “It’s like family here. I saw one (customer) I knew this morning, and he said, “Thank you for coming back.”

The June closure was particularly bad timing for Disney hotel guests looking to save money, because the Tangaroa Terrace restaurant at the Disneyland Hotel and the White Water Snacks at Disney’s Grand Californian are currently both closed for remodeling.

It remains unclear how long the Earl will reign in Anaheim, although talks have been underway about moving the Anaheim store to an as-yet-undisclosed location. Some fans hope that it will eventually reside in the new hotel, assuming it is ever built. The restaurant, which opened in 2012, is part of a 32-location chain that’s a subsidiary of the Planet Hollywood company.

Will the hotel ever be built?

Stanley said he didn’t know.

“We’d just like to say thank you to all our loyal customers who talked to Disney about us,” Stanley said. “It’s gratifying.”<<

So when do we start flaming Earl of Sandwich for not paying their employees a living wage?

BS, Iger’s worth is A LOT higher than that. He gets paid that every 18-30 months, depending on stock performance. His fortune was approaching a billion in 2015-2016.

A believe that they use a shared pool system for the tips collected at the register. That means a preset formula for all non-management employees based on hours worked. That can easily make their wages significantly better. Why do you think 2/3'rds returned to the job, even after Disney helped find them other jobs, not necessarily in tipped positions.

Edited to add - The EoS is non-union. So many of these EoS employees got Disney CM jobs, so a job with some nice perks, but also union dues. These CM's returned to a job with less wages and less perks, but nice shared tips.

And UNITE HERE claims their union members, the majority in tipped positions are not making a living wage, and want the citizens of Anaheim to give the $18 per hour, PLUS tips and perks.... something is very wrong with this equation.

I was sad that we couldn't get our EoS fix in our late Aug trip. I am happy to see them come back. I was just thinking 20 years ago we went to Universal and ate at the Marvel World Experience. It would seam logical that Disney would open one up in Downtown Disney once Marvel Land is in full swing.
