We are planning a grand gathering in October. Our First. What do we need to know - what do we need to ask for? I heard about a MK fireworks/pirate thing and an illuminations dinner/vip seating. What else is there? And what is worth the price? Any tips you can offer?
Thanks to all.

Here's the Disney link to Grand Gatherings, including the perks and a how-to:

We found the the Magical Gathering downloadable planner indispensable (Tinkerbell is really cute too -- you can make her fly, laugh, clap, etc.) Once you book, they will give you access to the download and everyone in your party can download it, plan on it, and everyone has access to the reservations, must-dos, etc. You can chat and e-mail; it really was a lifesaver.

We have done 3 Grand Gathering trips with 12-16 people each. Our next GG is in August with close to 40. This is the first GG that we are going to try one of the extra GG experiences. Tony's Breakfast is now only one dining credit. The safari and the illuminations are a really personal choice on value..at $60 per adult it can be very pricey! Good luck, have fun and remember, you won't all need to stay together 24/7, break up in smaller groups to do those "must do's" on your own lists. This gives everyone a break and some needed space.

Couldn't have said it better ... and check out the "regular" tours to do on your own too! So far, we have people in our GG splitting off and doing tours that interest them: Divequest, Seas Aqua, Behind the Seeds, Undiscovered Future World, and Family Magic Tour. Same goes for dining ... we have maybe three GG dining ADRs, and the rest is what interests us either individually or as a family.

We are in the early stages of planning our GG for August 2008. We know August works best for everyone. We also know that we want at least 8 days and our plan is to travel mid week when the flights are less crowded. We have discussed the Safari Experience and think we'll end up reserving it.

We are 1st waiting for everyone to figure out their bidgets and 2nd we'll pick a resort that suits everyones needs, 3rd we need the 08 rates to be released. We do not want a value and about 1/2 of us really want AKL, but we expect that will be out of someone's price range and we'll need to go with a moderate, but we'll wait and see. I am very interested to hear reports on how everyone who's done or planning a GG picked the resort to stay.

We too, are beginning to plan our grand gathering. We generally stay at Shades of Green which does not participate in grand gatherings.

I'm trying to remember from when I first looked into this a couple of years ago...

Do you get your own agent assigned to you? Don't they make your dining arrangements for you? If you're booking online, how do you let them know it's a grand gathering, do you have to go link all your rooms together later?

Coltow, my pick would be AKL or WL but unfortunately some of our families have 3 kids. The only rooms they can fit in without spending a fortune are Port Orleans Riverside. So I think our choice is made for us!

We will have 2 families of 4 (3 toddlers, 1 teen + parents), 1 family of 3 (toddler), 2 grandparents 3 aunts and 1 uncle. We'll need 5 or 6 rooms, but none will have more than 4 so we really can stay anywhere. Once we pick a price range we can then attempt to find a resort, but I'm guessing this will take some time.

When we made our intial reservation, one person become the "gathering leader" and made intial reservations for the group. The group then had about a week to make their deposits to their individual resort reservations.

Everyone in the group is given the same Grand Gathering ID Number, and then separate resort or package reservation numbers.

Also, instead of calling the regular Disney line, you are given a Disney Grand Gathering telephone number that is separate from the regular reservations line, and you can book the Grand Gathering exclusive dining and excursions through there, as well as making any modifications/payments to your resort reservation.

You make your regular dining arrangements through the regular dining phone line, but also give them your Grand Gathering ID Number. Same with regular tours, you use the regular tour phone line.

We picked our resort based on everyone's budget. We had originally booked into a Value, but after some discussion and consideration, upgraded to moderate, as we found out that one party in our GG would not stay on Disney property (they are timeshare holders and wanted to use their points to stay off property rather than paying out for accomodations). It didn't matter, as we still had enough of us staying on property to qualify for our Grand Gathering. We based our moderate resort on proximity, recreation, and theming. A few of us had stayed at some of the other moderates, too, so personal preference came into play. We also researched through the WDW guides and internet sites and came up with PO Riverside, (which is the highest rated/reviewed moderate on property by both AllEars and Birnbaum's).

Hope this helps.

Thanks H2O Baby! I don't know why I thought we got our own agent who booked dining for us. I wonder if they tried that at first?? I'm sure it's going to be a pain in the neck getting priority seating for 25!

Okay, I know why I thought that!! Because they did! I followed the link and here's a quote:

"Priority Dining & Dinner Shows
Our Grand Gatherings Travel Planners can help arrange your dining needs. From an intimate dinner for two to your entire party enjoying one of our dinner shows - there are dining options for all your tastes. "

Now obviously this is an old link because look what was below that:

"2005 Walt Disney World Merchandise
Do something special for you and your party before you arrive. Order the latest 2005 Walt Disney World Merchandise and we will have it waiting for you when you check in to your Walt Disney World Resort. "

So maybe they don't help with normal dining anymore but they used to!!

Really? That's awesome!!
This was our favorite of the GG activities.
We also did the pirates fireworks cruise, which was alright. It was fun for the young kids, but the boats were really dirty and buggy.
Absolutely recommend Tony's Breakfast!! :sohappy: :sohappy:

Disneyfalcon,
I have to say I recommend going through PAM! At Kingdom Konsultants! She is amazing! We are a Grand Gathering of nearly 40! Yes 40 (girl scout trip) and going in August. And she got us everything we wanted...Cinderellas Royal Table, Le Cellier, Tony's, Sci-Fi, Crystal Palace etc. Not at bizzaro times either, really close to times we wanted! She knows her stuff and does an amazing job!
