Graduation Gift Help

I graduate from high school in May! People are starting to ask me what I want as Graduation presents. I have no idea, so I'm asking ya'll for ideas. I'm going to college at LSU in the fall and staying in a dorm.

Oh gosh...trying to think what useful presents I got (or wish I got)...

Clothes bag and hamper
Towels
If you're going to be working out, perhaps an mp3 player
Desk Chair
Briefcase or Laptop case
Sheets
Gift cards to a bookstore affiliated with your campus bookstore (REALLY useful if this applies)
Clothes

Stuff along these lines. I know it sounds kinda boring, but they really come in handy for dorm life (I'm just finishing up my freshman year). If I think of anything else I'll post it.

Thanks. I am looking for useful things, so your input is greatly appreciated. Especially since you are just going through your first year.

Things you're going to want are things like:

vaccuum
money (for laundry)
gift cards (restaurants, stores)
a computer (laptop or desktop)
silverware
pots/pans/plates, etc
cooking utinsels
laundry soaps
clothes
bedding
towels
soap/shampoo, other bathing goods

Basically think of the things you use everyday, and then think of which of those you won't have once you move away...ask for those.

In the laundry department, rolls of quarters work quite well. In fact, when I run low on laundry money, my mom just ships me a few more rolls.

Shower shoes are also a must.
Also, if your school allows it, a hot pot can come in handy for basic cooking (Ramen, etc.) Also be sure to check if you school provides microwaves or allows them in the room. A refridgerator is also nice.

Good points Hank.....a microwave is something you really might want to get for your bedroom so you can warm some things up late at night.

Also, I've heard horror stories about roommates and fridges, so I would recommend you take our own and keep just your stuff in it. I have a small one here at home in my bedroom and I love having it here.

True about the fridge--it depends on the roommate. I got lucky with a great roommate and we share a fridge (we're both 100% non-alcoholic). I do have a few fridge horror stories, but they're mainly about things I found growing in there after long periods of neglect. :lookaroun :hurl:

As a current college student, I will have to say the best thing you could ask for are gift certificates to your bookstore or perhaps to Amazon. BIG BIG BIG Help. Those books are expensive, and I buy used anytime I can!!!

Also, I'd have to say gift certs to Target or Wal Mart or a store like that, since you will be dorming. You can use the gift certs to buy the stuff you need (bed sheets, etc).

i would also recommend a water purifier... along witha fridge... if i didn't have either of those things i don't think i could have made it though my dorm days (lets just say... dc food was disgusting). sometimes you can rent fridges and microwaves on move in day... it's prestty cheap too. hot pots are great (thank goodness for ramen... the dorm staple). but the best thing to get for right now are gift cards to target or whatever stores are near campus... i would also ask for resturants around campus too.

Yes, gift certificates are the best you can get to places that sell stuff for your dorm needs, I highly recommend it. When I went on the College Program thats what my relatives gave me for chirstmas gifts were gift cards to Target and Wal-Mart.

You could also throw money in there as well and start saving for books. The best thing I did when I got done with my semester is first see if the college would buy back any of my books, if they didnt buy any back, which one year they didnt buy back all 7 of them, I went to www.ecampus.com and they bought back all my books. You can buy books from there as well.

I have to agree that a hotpot (and a goody basket of your favorite soups, canned foods... and a can opener) is a great idea. I gave one to my niece this past year and she loves it. A microwave or toaster oven is always useful, if they are allowed. A mini fridge is a must. A plate, bowl, mug & utensils to go along with them too.

Don't be afraid to ask for gift cards or money. Some people don't like to give them because it makes it seem like they didn't take the time to shop, but you will need things for your dorm and books so what you really need is money.

I always ask if anyone needs/wants/collects anything before I get a gift that way I know it will be used and not thrown in a closet to be forgotten.

Good luck!

Graduation is all about $$. I couldn't believe the random people who were sending me money... it was amazing!

Some of the big things I got for graduation were a microwave, stereo, and a tv/vcr combo. All very much came in handy!

Do you know who your roomate is yet? A good thing to do would be to get in contact with your roomate and find out what they have and what you have and what you need... like since I was bringing the microwave, my roomate brought the fridge, etc. That way you know what you need!

Take the cash

Be careful with appliances, if you live in a dorm they might not let you have certain things. I remember we couldn't have hot plates or coffee pots. It's probably stricter at my school now since the dorm fire.

We also got almost got written up for having the band amp hooked up to our stereo.

But that was a volume problem. :lookaroun

After spending three days at LSU this week, I noticed that many students are walking around listening to their Mp3 player. I'm adding Mp3 player to my list. Any suggestions?
