I'm so jealous of all of you. I wish I could go to grad night this year--since I am a senior--but alas, I live 550 miles away. That's too bad, really. It sounds like it's so much fun, and I love getting dressed up, so the dress code wouldn't bother me at all.

Who in their right mind would consider a night out wearing long pants and dress shirts in 90 degree Florida weather a good time? And Disney wonders why their grad nights are failing miserably as they lose more and more schools to Universal. Isn't it a little strange to be all dressed up to ride Snow White? I'm pretty sure most kids would rather just have some fun at the parks than visit a formal fashion show.

The way it was always explained to us in high school in florida, well at least in my high school and my friend's schools, is that the purpose of the semi-formal wear is partly psychological. The idea is that if you are dressed up, you are more than likely going to be better behaved. How true that is ...i don't know. Ask a psychologist.

I know my brothers who went to school in 83 and 84 were also given the same excuse. But in this day and age it also discourages kids from wearing their "colors" or any other kind of gang or group affiliations. The kids in my school were pretty well behaved, but I do remember noticing that a lot of people behaved even better and there was minimal supervision.

Separate related subject: URBAN LEGEND - one of the weirdest urban legends about grad nite that you find in every high school is that someone will tell you that a graduating class a few years prior threw mickey mouse into the cinderalla castle moat. everyone you meet in florida will say that someone in their school did that a few years earlier. It is the most bizarre rumor with no grain of truth. LOL

Ok the cloth issue at Grad nite is this....you don't need to wear pants....I believe you can wear nice shorts (guys) and you def can wear capri's if you are a girl because that is what I wore. Make sure you wear good shoes and if you are wearing nice sandals make sure they're comfy....mine killed last year. And trust me when you have been going all day and then you go to MK at 11-3am it hurts....Just be warned lol

Just to let those you who are going this year know, my school held a special meeting today to discuss Grad Nite and make sure we knew the dress code. OrlPassholder's is correct... ABSOLUTELY NO SHORTS FOR GUYS... They also made sure the girls knew no flip flops, strapless tops, or miniskirts. The only shorts that are allowed are those 'granny type' shorts down to the knees (for the girls, of course). In my opinion, and the administration, better to play it safe than sorry. If the school deems it ok, but Disney doesn't, you're left at the gate until your parents pick you up. There also searching us before we get on the busses. Once on you can't get off.

I understand why they're being so strict. Many of the geniuses in my class would spike drinks, etc. and thus is why they're being so strict. Despite the restrictions and prohibitions we will still have a great time!

PS: My stepdad is psychology major. He agreed that by having formal dress there is less behavioral issues.

The dress code isn't what makes Disney lose popularity to Grad Bash. It's the park in general. No one complains (at least in my school and others) about the dress code. Some kids just think Disney is for little kids. People exaggerate a lot when they say "90° WEATHER IN FLORIDA AND LONG PANTS OH GOD!!!". It is not THAT hot. I think it's a good idea about having us dress that way. Someone brought up a good point about them having to check our clothes for offensive material. That would take forever. Not to mention we will ,for the most part, all look the same. If we were free to wear whatever we want then it'd be a mess. There would probably be a lot of fights especially with the "thug" kids wearing their gang related clothing. Perhaps some harrassment if girls were to wear short skirts or revealing tops? The dress code is not really that strict anyways. A polo style shirt and some pants is fine, I think. Sure it's not your everyday WDW attire but whatever :)

Hey, Dox-I was there in '89 also.

Girls had to wear either dresses or skirts to the knee. I went to an all girl school and we were told to dress as you would when attending church services. The clothes were no big problem, but shoes were another story. By all means, do not wear good shoes or new shoes. Your feet do hurt and by the end of the night, you won't care to walk anywhere.

I agree with everyone about the clothes affecting behavior. People do behave differently.

This reminds me of my 4th grade students in one way. When they were allowed to wear anything to school, big bucks were spent on clothes but the kids didn't really "take care" of them during the day. When they began wearing uniforms, their behavior changed. They never do anything to mess up their "precious" uniforms. The funny thing is that they can be purchased at Wal Mart for probably $15 per set.

To all going this year, have an awesome time and don't worry about the clothes. You only get this chance once! I had an awesome time....

And getting dressed up will somehow dissuade kids from spiking drinks and other assorted attrocities? And to think in the 80's wearing a tie was cool.

Well, whatever makes their guests happy and brings them back...

One day though, I want to go to the MK in full 3 piece Dress Suit, just to see what the reactions are (with wdwswashbuckler because I know he'd be up for that too )

I don't think I would ever willing go anywhere in a 3 piece suit that I wasn't being paid for or forced to wear.

Dude, that's not what I said. By threatening kids of expultion and not being able to walk at graduation, I'm sure the administrations of MANY schools will be more than able to dissuade kids from spiking drinks and other assorted attrocities.

And yes, after reflecting upon it I do think that a dress code will stop some kids from doing stupid stuff. To go under the influence or try to sneak in any illegal substance or alcohol a student would be breaking the law, and will then be under the jurisdiction of the Orange County sherriffs. Sounds to me like a situation most kids won't want... :o

Honestly when I was there for Grad Nite....it wasn't that hot at night and I was there in May. I don't think you will be that miserable...and hey you're at Disney better than where I am!

I just remembered something because someone mentioned wearing nice clothes while on Splash mountain. I was wearing a silk blouse and nice black pants and I ended up riding in the front on Splash Mt. with my friend. I didn't get soaked at all. Only my hair was affected, if at all. Just thought I'd share :)

 Well, I'm 32 and if you're going to pretend then I want to as well. Although I admit your chances of getting in would be greater. However, maybe we could pose as chaperones.

Man it does sound like they are slacking off the dress code..even from a few years back...If memory serves, I remember working in the emporium and we were told to make sure the guys had their ties on and their shirts tucked in. Lots of weird little rules like that that we were supposed to enforce...I was to nice to do it though! :D

As for the 3 piece suit..i used to wear one on Main Street (even though the jackets were optional..i thought it looked sweet so I'd wear it on occasion)...yikes when its hot and you have that 3 piece suit on its 5 time worse! Never again.

I'm pretty stoked about going. Good thing Philharmagic is open. I didn't think they'd open it for Grad Nite for some reason...
