20000 Leagues Ride really was NOT THAT GOOD!!! what is everybody so uptight about!??!
i listen to people cry & Mourn the loss of rides like they are their children!! This one especially! The ride did nothing for me, granted when i was a five year old it was cool, but the reality is that is was too costly (Operationally) of a ride that didn't cater to the new Disney audience. What 10 year old today knows the 20k story? But ask a 10 year old who Ariel is im sure they will know. This ride (for all the right reasons) is gone forever! No extensive theming in the queue area, no handicap acessability, too much $$$$ to maintain & it was just plain boring & not worthy of a 1-2 hour wait with no part of the wait being under A/C!!! Good riddence!! I hope the next horrible ride to go is the indy speedway! This can go away & I wouldn't shed 1/2 of a tear!! I hate waiting in line for this & my 4 y.o always wants to ride it!!
I just hope they replace 20k with something worthy of its valuable & Prime Fantasyland neighborhood Property Value!!

I remeber the good stuff that is gone too! I liked Mr. Toad but Think Pooh Is better suited for today's audience. World of motion was good too but Test Track Is Way Better!! Anyone Not happy with what replaced Horizons has got to be insane!!!! I thought The Tiki Room was good, But Now The New Story will Maintain my 4 y.o. attention & Create new memories for her. This is more important than my own memories anyday!!!

This was from another posting that I made on another thread!

I think it is worthy of its own thread,

Lets talk about what i wrote not as greedy nostalgia hounds. But, as people with kids. Kids who need & deserve Disney memories even more than we do. Like I said this is why tired old rides need to change. Not for money but because i want my daughter to have the same feeling about WDW as i do & without rides that cater to her it WILL NOT HAPPEN!! Think about the world when you grew up. Then think about the world that our children are growing up in & you will see what i mean! Disney has always been a safe escape for me even in my memories! Children today need this more than ever!

No more Babbling.... Fo now!!!:sohappy: :sohappy:

One question, why so angry? I will say the strings on the fish were a little hokey, but it was like a piece of Magic Kingdom history. It's like Pirates, Small world, just things that reminded me of my childhood. The one in Tokyo Disney Sea is supposed to be cool, that's what I want.

People are mostly upset at the 20K closure because of the plans to fill the area and make it a MEET AND GREET and GIFT SHOP.

Is this prime and worthy in your book considering there's one right there in Toontown? And elsewhere in the Magic Kingdom??

As for the New Tiki Room, you're forgetting that the new attraction is still failing because of loss of traditional standards.

And kids today? Disney isn't about kids.

It's about family. That's what Walt wanted. A place to grow attached to - remember the lyrics? "It's been a part of me, a part of you?"

Nostalgia hounds? Perhaps you're not as attracted to Disney because of your past as much as you are interested in the Disney of the future, but where does this play in in the recent cutbacks? And the replacement of attractions with shops and meet and greets?

Plus, I think a six year old would have 20x more fun in the CLOSED Image Works than in the new Mission Space Post Show, Test Track post show, and What If? Labs combined.

It's not that we don't want things to change - - change can be VERY beneficial! But when you lose the traditions? No, that's going to far. And maybe our concern for this is, in the end, beneficial for the "Disney children." And I think we're all children, anyway. Isn't that what Uncle Walt told us?? :king:

I think some rides come and go. This one went. Many are upset, personally, I don't care either way if it's still there or filled in.

If it was still there, I'd ride it, only if the line wait wasn't longer than 20 minutes.

DIsney can use the space to put something better than a meet and greet in... hopefully they will!

Just my 2 cents!

Dude... what was the point for this thread? You think this is worthy of it's own thread... and it's not. I hope feel a lot better now that you got that unbearable pressure about nostalgia hounds off your chest. I'm with Grizz on this one. It's not about losing the ride, it's about losing the heart that once made Disney so amazing.

Just Curious, What other ride has been replaced with a meet & Greet.

Timekeeper has, technically. . . and Golden Horseshoe now is a big flop. Successful among a lot of kids, but there needs to be more balance as there need be in Tiki Room.

However, there have been INCREASED meet and greets elsewhere. Why ruin a perfectly nice area with MORE? Not to mention shops.

And, anyway, there's a lot of space wasted. Mission Space doesn't use half the area Horizons used . . . and the GM Postshow is a waste, along with the What If? Labs. This is all in comparison to the basically intact Image Works upstairs.

"Nemo" is a great example of how to help attractions. Without being obnoxious or taking away from an attraction or educational value, new characters have been added to freshen.

"Splash Mountain," "Timekeeper," and "Buzz Lightyear" are also great examples of rehabs and the promise of new additions & continuation of Disney traditions in RAISING the bar. (Except I still miss Dreamflight. :p )

Agreed. M:S can be replacable with new technology and a new film.

Something with such detail and effort put into it for the HEART and meaning - - that's Horizons, and you see this attraction being brought up on these forums nearly every day.

Goes to show ya.

Disney should feel free to make new attractions - - but just ones that are better and actually raise the bar with new songs and animatronics and show quality.

For example, speakers and pipes can be seen all along the 2003 Mission Space queue roof. . . but where can you find this in the entire 1989 Wonders of Life pavilion?

Angry member? I'm an angry member? And my blood ain't boiling. You don't make a valid point. All you are doing is (obviouisly, with your 'fun for me' comment) trying to get members mad. You are wasting your time, because the mature members who would get 'angry' aren't going to bother responding, let alone reading. So keep thinking that you causing this big stir if it makes you feel important, because this thread is really just vindictive malice that no one will pay a great deal of interest to.

I have no problem with updating rides so that they can draw to a more modern audience.

I have a problem when such updates destroy the feel of a ride. Horizons was an attraction that beautifully portrayed the future in a manner that was powerful, thought provoking, and could be enjoyed by the entire family.

While I enjoy M:S, it is only half of the ride that Horizons was. To me, M:S feels incomplete. A three minute thrill can never compare with something that is stock full of detail and heart.

I didnt realize there was a new thread started, so all just paste what I wrote on the older thread:

You're right it was advanced and yes, you could see the wires. But thats not what I enjoyed so much about it. The whole ride itself was unique. Sure Pooh is great, but in all its glory its just Snow white with new badging (Although TDL's Pooh is in the right direction!). Yes Submarine Voyage is basically the same ride, but the theming for 20K was perfect. SV probably should have closed down a long time ago, way before 20K did.

I dont know of any other theme park out there that has a submarine ride. Perhaps why I was so fond of it was because my favorite (& first) disney movie I remember watching was 20K, so when I first stepped onboard, it was like I was there. And thats what a great ride does. Rides like Dumbo, astro orbiter, and aladdin are a dime a dozen. And yes it was expensive to maintain but I'm sure if they really sunk some money into it, long run costs would have been reduced. But now thats it gone, I just hope they do something unique with it instead of copying a pre-existing attraction.

I'll definitely agree with you about the speedway. That definitely needs to go. If they got rid of it, that would free up some great property for an attraction. I wont miss it. Although the go-carts are incredibly fast when you switch the governor off, as my roomie showed me one time.

Also worth noting is that it still is very popular. I dont think there wasnt a day that went by when I was working( Cust. @ FL) when a guest would come up to me and ask what happened to the submarine ride. Often they would tell me how much they enjoyed it as a kid even if parts of it were cheesey but they wanted to show it to their kids because it was so unique.

Okay. Let me try to clarify my point.

Take two films: BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and ATLANTIS.

One was from 1991, the other from 2001, ten years later.

Most Disney fans are saying that, "the new films aren't that good anymore." Some fans from Atlantis might say, "but this is for the NEW Disney generation. . ." etc.

Let's look more into it.

Compare Horizons to Beauty and the Beast:

1. Covered a broad range of interests.
2. Had traditional Disney song and score.
3. Heart warming despite the various settings.

It caters to many an audience, is what I'm saying. Kids who like action-packed space shuttles see a giant one lift off. Parents who value the family settings take interest in the family story of Horizons. Everyone else gets emersed in the heart-warming attraction based on detail.

Beauty and the Beast also featured song, heart, and so many different things that catered to different guests. It had action, romance, comedy (like Horizons). It was Disney.

Compare Atlantis to Mission Space.

1. Focused down on action.
2. No song/score for the audience to carry with them.
3. Cold in setting
4. Focusing on specific interests

This is a bad formula. It now has a lesser potential audience, there is no "heart" throughout the pavilion, it's cold, no song. In these respects, it's not "Disney." Atlantis, too, was a cold setting based on action - no heart, no song, etc.

Mission Space is CERTAINLY a booster, but long-term? Disney will end up having to REPLACE thrill after thrill just to base itself on a new formula.

If Disney could incorporate the original "Beauty and the Beast" - or Lion King or Little Mermaid - Horizons - BALANCE into its new attractions, then there wouldn't be so much a problem.

In fact, you could compare Splash Mountain. A balance of traditional characters, songs, and thrill. It's perfect.

And I think if new attractions could follow this old model, the basis while retaining novelty - why, that would be just great.

Not that it was an attraction per say, but the Main Street Flower Market had been destroyed and obliterated to make room for an extension of a store that includes merchandise that can be purchased anywhere and everywhere else in Walt Disney World.

Many people had many fond and nostaligic memories there. It was a photo MUST

**edit sorry for the double post--i dont know what to do--this is the one i dont want to keep, jsut skip to my next one--sorry guys, my mistake

Newbies , sounds like a couple of you might fit in better at a Universal Studios website. just kiddin...everyone's welcome! Most people on this sight will disagree with you. I feel what sets Disney apart from the rest of its competition can be summed up in one word.CHARM. US & IoE lack charm. My favorite attraction at any Disney theme park isn't on the map, its ATMOSPHERE. I love to just stroll around and enjoy the feeling, the smells and sights...to me that IS Disney.

Why not just explain to your 4 year old that WDW is really for 30 year old guys, not kids.

In fact, why don't you make a list of attractions that YOU think are good, this way we all know what to go on. :hammer:

Well, I for one REALLY miss 20,000 leagues under the sea. I can remember loving it as a young kid and being completely immersed, as it were, in the illusion of going underwater and travelling around the ocean floor. The last time I rode it I was 12, and though I was certainly able to see a wire or two and even caught a glimpse of the surface of the water during scenes that were supposedly "30 fathoms" beneath, I still thought the attraction was a blast and well worth the long, boring wait. My family is only minorly disney-obsessed, but I had seen the movie 20,000 leagues on TV several times, and the Verne book was on my summer reading list in middle school.
If nothing else, the mere fact that this dark ride is set underwater makes it worthwile, both to kids and adults. From an engineering standpoint it's especially fascinating, if only because there's nothing else like the two Disney sub rides at any other theme park in the world.
I still think that if the ride were to be re-opened it would continue to be very popular in the park, if only for its uniqueness. Besides, you could easy do a number of things to spruse it up a bit. Adding additional fans or misters in the queue would make the line more bearable, and the visible guidwires for the fish could be replaced with invisible lexan rods to improve the illusion.

BTW, I'm still quite interested in learning more about this ride. Are there any photos on the web of the animatronics being installed/repaired or some sort of diagram of the ride's path? I would KILL for a chance to walk the catwalks above this attraction or scuba dive through it with a flashlight... man, now THAT would make one hell of a haunted house.
