Going to Orlando...for work

So I will be going to Orlando next April for a conference at the Rosen Shingle Creek.

For those of you who are Disney addicts/lover/obsessed/nut jobs/pixie dusters, etc., and who have gone down for work and not pleasure, how do you cope with being so close but yet so far away? LOL

Reading the thread about things that make you feel like you have arrived, that will stink...to be there and not be able to go. LOL

I'm seriously thinking about skipping some of the night functions and dinners and go hit MK on my own dime.

Its easy, you're there for something else... something that puts food on the table and a roof over your head. everything has its place and time.

As much as I would prefer a night at MK over a work-related social function...it probably wouldn't be the wisest idea to skip it. Especially if the company is paying for this dinner or any travel expenses.

Like others have said, let this excursion be for your job. Disney will still be there next time.

I used to fly to Tampa a lot for business. As long as it did not cost any extra, there was no problem with taking a few vacation days at the end and going to WDW for a few days.

I would pay for my hotel, food, etc (well, I would use DVC points, but you get the idea) on the days I was on vacation. Most of the time it saved my company money because I would fiy home on a Sunday, and that was cheaper than the mid-week business flight would have been.

Shingle Creek is a nice hotel with WONDERFUL service. Disney could learn a few lessons from the Rosen people. You'll be happy with it.

If the dinners are just socializing, I'd skip them and hit the parks. You're close to Disney, closer yet to Uni and practically on top of Sea World. Go and have some fun.

Can you tack a vacation day or two onto it?

My first trip to Orlando was for work. I'd always wanted to go to Disney, but didn't know it was in Orlando. When I found out I was being sent to WDW, I was like, "Oh, my God. I have to take time this time!!" Usually, I arrived at the airport, took a car service to the hotel, worked, took a car back to the airport and left. If I walked down streets and ate in a restaurants, that was the extent of my sightseeing, lol. I was in and out of all kinds of places and never saw any of them.

But I HAD TO SEE Disney World!

My boss and his boss were only too happy to give me a few extra days. They didn't even make me take vacation days. They picked up the hotel tab for the extra nights, got me tickets to the parks and everything.

Give it a shot! :)

I second this. Rosen Shingle Creek is one of the nicest resorts I've seen. I was lucky enough to tour the property and was amazed at how much it felt like being in the utilidors, but they are much more efficient than what you'll find backstage at MK. Great resort, great service!

I had a business trip to Tampa this year and was able to to decide when it was since it already needed to be rescheduled after the original person going had to cancel due to a family emergency. I had family going to Disney so I scheduled the trip for around when they arrived and told my boss I want to use my remaining vacation days after the work was done. Finished with the last meeting by 11am, changed into shorts and a t-shirt in the bathroom, drove directly to EPCOT (Did not collect $200), and met them outside SSE. :p

Definitely try to take some time off after your work is done. Nights will not be enough. Especially when you are paying so much for a ticket.

When this happened for me I just took extra days and went to Disney outside of work obligations. If that is possible then I say do it...your work already covered the dime getting you there so why not extend your stay?

Extra days is not an option because the family can't come...as much as I love Disney, I don't think it's fair for me to take extra time to go and they can't.
Now if it's a social dinner, and I can skip it, then it's a different story! LOL

I just got back from a two week Disney trip a few days ago and I'm back there right now on business and it's killing me. Part of my brain just hasn't come to grips that I'm not on vacation and wants to drive on over in the evenings and use my AP. The other part of me wants to keep business and Disney separate because Disney is my refuge and shelter from reality. Whenever I go there my problems melt away and it is great bonding time with my family. I don't want to muddle the two and have any sort of "work" thoughts what-so-ever in Disney. So, that's how I stay away. I want to keep the magic pure. Plus it would be like cheating on my wife.

OK, a little off topic but do you realize your avatar is the monopoly dog and you just made a monopoly reference? Is it synchronicity or are yoou a big monopoly fan?

Oh I would definitely skip out on one of the social events (as long as you're not risking getting in trouble) and I'd go enjoy an evening at MK for sure!! How fun!

Use the trip as an opportunity to knock out some small adventures you've wanted to take but have never gotten to do in pervious trips.

I was at Gaylord Palms for a conference earlier this year. The confernce didn't start til mid day on a weekday so I hopped over to MK that morning to check out FLE which I had still yet to see. I also used one free night to wander DTD and have a leisurely dinner at the Raglan Road bar.

After the conference I checked out of Gaylord and got a cheap room up by Uni and stayed through the weekend. Had never been to Uni nor IOA so this was the perfect time for me to check those areas out.

All work and no play makes sparky a very dull and distraught boy! :)

One time I had to drive down for work but I spent the day in the parks since I made it early enough. Another time I stayed across from Downtown Disney for the night and just hung out there.
