I was able to purchase new Christmas lights yesterday. Last year, I had noted that I would need to replace some that were getting old, and I had to use my back-up sets when some died. So I needed new back-up lights.

Nothing worse than having a section of lights fail the day before Christmas, with no time to buy more.

commercialism and tradition. however, its not as safe as it was back in the day, which is why many communities have alternate trick or treating arrangements. also sad thing: after Halloween stuff, they put out christmas stuff. they kind of "skip over" thanksgiving. my parents told me that back in the day, christmas stuff would not touch store shelves, decorations, etc. until the day after thanksgiving.
