What is "The Volume"?
Next-generation green screen.

Basically, you pre-render your background imagery and then the actors perform on physical sets surrounded by screens showing those backgrounds. It's better than performing on green screens and then adding the backgrounds later because the lighting looks much more natural.

Ah, that explains why everything from Marvel looks terrible, and the Star Wars shows actually look decent... terrible plots nonwithstanding.

Oookay. I mean, it sounds cool and all, but they are still performing in front of screens. Does it help the overall quality of the finished product?

Yes, tremendously. Like... WAAAAAAY better.

If there's a light source on the screen that's illuminating a scene, that comes off much more naturally in the finished product than lighting the scene artificially and then trying to insert the light source into the background after the fact.

Thank you for the info. Are there any examples I could see? I am curious about this tech.

Nevermind. I saw this on YT.

No. I’m pretty sure it’s primarily used in the US.
Okay, I am suddenly fixated and obsessed with this tech. Is this the sort of tech used in rides such as Pirates of the Caribbean Shanghai? I'm more fascinated about the use of this in rides and the potential.

But as far as movies go, imagine the potential for VR experiences in theaters!

If you Google Stagecraft/The Volume you’ll get a list of TV/Film productions in which its been used. I don’t think it’s been used for rides, yet.

Yeah, they've yet to use high resolution and LED screens for rides. We'll get there. It will take time, but hopefully they will get there.

The 1995 Dark Forces video game is getting a remaster.

This was a solid game back in the day and I would say is part of the Star Wars renaissance that began with Heir to the Empire.

Problem with Dark Forces remaster is the story goes against Rogue One and Dark Trooper concept from Mandalorian. It is completely legends now. However it would be fun to rerun those maps again.
