OK here are some other things

Downtown disney - major construction (dont know what) in the area near the dancing fountains (next to the Gourmet Pantry and from there to the Guest Services area. The construction walls are up and work was going on each day.

Next to the Caribean beach resort you will see a new road being put in. According to our bus driver that is a road mandated by the city for Disney to put in as a right away. Someone owns a small (relatively) amount of land and is proposing 1 of 2 projects which has Disney ape *&#$. One is a casino (in conjunction with an native american tribe which would make it legal) and the other is a luxury hotel. Neither would be disney owned but would be located a less than 1 mile each from Downtown and Typhoon lagoon. Talk about location.

There is a new Opryland Hotel (big one) going in a stones throw from the Pop Century resort at the intersection of International Drive South and I forgot the other highway, maybe 417??

Resorts

Major league mess over at the Beach Club as the build the new Villas. The lake side view is OK and not affected but any front or garden view rooms see a hulking construction site and cranes.

Facade work on the Boardwalk is now off the boardwalk and onto the front of the building. Note - NOT CROWDED this year on the boardwalk at night - no music or anything outside with Atlantic Dance Hall closed. Everything closes (except for ESPN and the stores at 10pm - the shops on the boardwalk that is).

There are no buses from Downtown to any park (that stinks!!)

Character Meals

Avoid the Gullivers at the Swan - they keep messing up the characters set to attend (they have a set schedule that they then modify when you sit down) and the menu has changed from last year and not (in my mind) for the better.

Birthday Surprises

My wife pulled a birthday surprise on me while we were down there with a group that does these things. They did a Goofy B-Day hunt for me that had customized signs in the park directing me to find "goofy" presents until finally you got the real gift whatever was chosen. It was really interesting and fun for me and the family and took about 2 hours of following clues, going on rides etc. I can get you the companies link if any one is interested.

Is this actually IN wdw? or just outside, I thought that Disney owned all of the land too!

Is this a sign that Disney need to start thinking about trying to buy some more land?

Oh well time will tell, but it must be pretty certain to go ahead, we heard something to this effect last year. Shame though.

The land borders disney and had right of way requirements or something like that which meant that Disney had to build them an access road if the project went forward and the road is going in now (you will see the construction). That end (by Downtown and the Buena Vista Hotels) is right at the border of their land and it looks like in this case the owner of the other land got lucky.

Now we will see what we get.

Maybe lucky, maybe had vision and realized what Disney could become, maybe just didn't want to sell it way back when, either because they weren't offered enough money, or didn't want to see all of the area developed. I suspect the owner at the time is gone, and someone else has decided to finally do something with the land. I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't other pockets of land in the area in similar situations.

I'm sure Disney will either bury those people (not in a killing way ;) ) or they will offer them a settlement to either buy the land or not build on it.

Actually, there are some documented facts regarding this very unusual (and unfortunate) "Bonnet Creek Resort".
- Bonnet Creek Resort is a long-dormant 482-acre piece of land bordered on three sides by Disney property. It is at the edge of the Disney property line and is just east of Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort, just south of Typhoon Lagoon and just North of Disney's Wide World of Sports complex.
- Documents filed with the Orange County planning department indicate the land was acquired as an investment in 1962, several years before Disney started buying 27,000 acres next door.
- Brooksville Development, an Orlando firm, has been hired to develop the site. According to Dan Paris, senior vice-president with Brooksville Development, the owner is finalizing approval to build 3,000 hotel rooms, 1,600 time-share units and a 250,000 square foot conference center.
- The owner is still unclear. According to Orange County property appraiser's records, the land is listed to World Union-Cayman Limited, a company whose mailing address is a bank in the Grand Cayman Islands. According to an Orlando Sentinal article last year, Circuit Court records indicate the owner's name was World Union Industrial Corp. in the 80's, a company based in Hong Kong. Dan Paris has indicated that the land is owned by an estate represented by an attorney in Houston. The attorney isn't speaking.
- The owner has secured right of way for a construction road through Disney property up to Lake Buena Vista Drive. This means that people staying at Bonnet Creek will have to Drive through Disney to access the property.

What a disaster.

FYI, the Native American Indian Tribe Casino is a completely seperate project located at least several miles from Disney property. The two projects are not related.

Good... I would hate to see a Casino on or bordering Disney Property.

The other highway is the Osceola Parkway. The hotel is enormous to put it mildly. The signs said that it was due to open in Feb 2002.

Hey, jatcatsnh. I'd like the company's link. We'll be celebrating husband's b-day while we're down there in December. And that would be a cool way to celebrate. :D
