Some general signs would be lack of eye contact, not responding to his name. Does he line things up in rows or is fascinated with things that spin. Does he flap his hands when he's upset or engage in self-injurious behavior? These are only some symptoms, and as with neurotypical children, represent only a certain portion of the spectrum. There is uniqueness with each child.
As to the cause, that is difficult to answer. My personal opinion is that it is a genetic predisposition with an environmental trigger. It's not a disease that can be caught. Look at family history, look at medical problems with immune issues, look at his diet and see if he focuses on only certain foods. Check whether he has sensory issues, i.e. do certain sounds make him upset or transversely does he not seem to react to his environment.
I wish I could give you a checklist to tell you. But what your sister needs to do is have him evaluated - test his speech, his motor skills, and above all, research, research, research. Autism is politically driven in our current culture, with different groups arguing over how to best treat these children, or what causes these behaviors....encourage her to keep an open mind about all of it, because each child is unique. What works in treatment for one child will not necessarily help the next.
And please know I'll always be around to answer any questions, Rick. To the best of my ability.

I have not seen him injur himself but all the other ones he has. She is keeping him off wheat and that has seem to help. Its hard to get him to make eye contact and he rarely shows expression. My son who is only 5 months will smile and laugh alot more than he will and he is 23 months. I have seen him in nursery putting chairs in a row. The other reason I ask is since DS is our first son, we are more concerned with the MMR shot coming at 12 months. But then the stuff I read say alot of the symptons are before 12 months. So to me it seems to be genetic with a trigure. My sister did not do the MMR. There is a history of mental retardation in her husbands side.

Something else to consider is replacing dairy as well, there have been some studies that a protein in dairy (casein) has a lot of the same problems with digestion as gluten in wheat.
Vaccines, Rick, are tricky. And that's what I meant by political....the idea that vaccines contribute to autistic symptoms is not popular and definitely not accepted by the medical mainstream. The MMR, I should be clear, does NOT contain the mercury. Mainstream medicine will tell you it has been removed from all other vaccines as a 'precaution'. Not true, we could not give Joel his final DTaP because thimerasol was in its processing. The theory is that all these other vaccines weaken a genetically susceptible child, so that when they receive the MMR, a live virus vaccine, it's the final trigger. My cousin's son dramatically regressed after he received the MMR, BUT he received his vaccines when the full strength of the mercury preservative was in it.
Still, I thought the MMR was given at 15-18 months, not 12. I can't tell you to not do it, Rick. You have to look at your own family history, as well as Linde (sp?). Has he had any other reactions to his shots?

not that i am aware of.. although we have noticed a bit of a temper.. but couldn't that just be him getting older and showing more emotion?

Oh yes, he's just developing his personality! No, I mean like high fever, diarrhea, that kind of thing after he gets the shots.
Vaccines, for most kids, are okay. But I still believe there is a certain group of children that should have a different schedule, or shots that don't contain these types of metals. And the fact that these kids are overlooked, for the sake of 'herd immunity' is what makes me so angry. No drug is 100% safe for everyone - even vaccines.

Is it time to go home yet? :lookaroun

15 minutes!!!!!!!!!!

I need to go to Best Buy and get Meet the Robinsons, and there is a new playstation 2 game about the princesses!
You get to dress them up and help them with their problems, all while learning about friendship, honesty, trust, and pixie dust.
Doesn't that just sound like the funnest thing????????????????? :)

Speaking of that, I should run down the hall and get my flu shot.
