Galaxy's Edge popularity vs Potter's popularity

Interesting about people refusing to visit Universal.

Here in the U.K. I would say that many families, once their (youngest) kids reach about 10 or 11, don't bother with Disney anymore. They see it as being for kids with few thrill rides, so do a couple of days at most. Luckily for me, my boys, and DH, are ride wimps :D

Star Wars might bring some back. So might GOTG and Tron. The theme of those alone will seem more attractive to people who associate Disney with Mickey and a pre-teen audience.

I definitely feel in a minority being a WDW fan, let alone DVC.
I definitely feel like many still go despite there being a long period of little innovation. Pandora was clearly a flash in the pan but star wars should get me to go back. As a matter of fact I am going to FL on my annual work trip, and when I wrap up around Feb 24th my wife is joining me. We rented a villa south west of orlando and have zero intent on going to the parks. We're bored of them. We have plans to move to FL in the next 2 years and have no desire to have annual passes, and have discussed that we probably would only want the Epcot after 4 pass to enjoy some of the festivals that are around most of the year.

Don't forget however that there is a Harry Potter version of Pokemon Go that is under development. Not sure if that is any better than Angry Birds. On the flip side, both did have Lego games made that were pretty enjoyable.
Lego games are probably the most enjoyable games to be made since I can remember. They really are fun and goofy but still provide lots of good gameplay.

One of the things I'm wondering about regarding the long-term longevity of Potter vs. Star Wars is if Potter can ever exist without Rowling. With Star Wars, most would argue that it's better off now without Lucas, and he was willing to sell it (give it up) to Disney. The question is, will Rowling? She's been very protective of Potter, and I'm wondering if she'll ever sell it, or, what will happen to it when she no longer is willing or able to create new Potter stories? Will others write new Potter material? Star Wars at this point has a much-more certain feature in that new material will be able to be created for decades to come...

I think that Potter can exist without Rowling, under the right creative control there are a number of stories that could entice more fans in. They are making an attempt with Fantastic Beasts. How that set of movies does is going to impact the outlook on the the franchise moving to more general management and away from Rowling herself.

Star Wars is a great case of creative control being delegated to grow a property. SW is now in it's 3rd (4th?) growth cycle. Potter is working on making it's 2nd cycle happen; while Fantastic Beasts has been popular, I don't think it quite spurred the momentum they were wishing for.

Star wars is at a very interesting point in its history. One could easily say that Solo seems that it is in major trouble. Its out in a few months and not even a trailer? JJ getting episode 9 after Johnson made an attempt at a long episode of battlestar galactica... I feel like Kathleen Kennedy is no Kevin Feige.. She isnt into the IP and it shows! I LOVE star wars, and selfishly I love that we are getting loads more content that isnt animated, but it is not what I would consider top notch stuff. Rogue One was probably the best yet but even that was filled with some annoying flaws for me.

FB: I enjoyed it in the movie theater but was not wowed. I recorded it at home and kept falling asleep on the beginning. Eventually just deleted it.

All the other Potter movies are permanently on my DVR and I can watch any one at any time and enjoy it all the way through. (Cedric dying is, to me, one of the most powerful moments, Dumbledore dying surprisingly less so.)

To me, there are three Star Wars movies: four, five, six. Anything else is “extra.” Prequels were disappointing. I’m enjoying the newer ones, including TLJ, and the people ripping it up are just annoying.

Oh I have no doubt that Potter *can* exist without Rowling. The question is will she will let it. She's been very tight with control of the franchise.

Its half filler with no payoff. People are ripping it because part of it feels like a cable tv storyline. Not to mention people getting all riled up about "finally" a strong female character... Princess Leia is a hundred times more interesting then Rey

Never seen Fantastic Beasts, how exactly is it connected to Potter?
Fantastic Beasts takes place in the same Wizarding World as Harry Potter. The first film takes place 70 years before Potter is born. The second Fantastic Beasts comes out this Christmas and one of the central characters is a young Dumbledore, played by Jude Law.

Apparently, he goes up against notorious bad guy Gellert Grindlewald, played by Johnny Depp (on the right below).

To further elaborate on what @Disneyhead'71 said, one of the text books/reference books mentioned in the series was "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them", written by Newt Scamander. That served as the starting point for the new series of movies, and they will then tie back into some of the historical events that lead up to the Potter series. Now personally I'm not really sure how a slightly bumbling Newt gets involved with Dumbledore and Grindlewald. Seems like a stretch to tie in some names that more people are familiar with.

Thanks. Watched FBAWTFT this weekend for the first time. Enjoyed it more than Potter but didn't find it great, though my wife really enjoyed it. Spotted a couple of connections to the 'Potter Universe' though I'm guessing there were many more for the 'fans' to identify that I missed.

And still takes in billions at the box office and cash registers.

Yes. Potter's biggest problem is that the story is told. It's done. ...and all the new stories still tie back to Voldemort  ...which is done. It seems that Rowling doesn't have any fresh material.

I have some quarrels with the direction of the new SW franchise, but they are definitely plowing new ground. Can Potter do that? I suppose we'll find out in the future.
