Galactic Starcruiser: DLR Opinions

I’m not sure if this new hotel in Orlando is officially open yet (I haven’t been following this project at all and only found out about the media preview because @TP2000 mentioned it in another thread), but I know that there’s plenty of footage of it out there on various platforms. What are we thinking, Disneyland fans? Anyone planning to make the cross-country trip to stay there? Anyone think it’s worth the thousands of dollars per night that Disney is charging to stay there to role play with other fans? If issa no for you, what would you rather spend your thousands of dollars on?

Issa no for me, as the kids say. :D

I get what they were going for, but the execution seems off.

A glaring problem for me is that it seems to suffer the same fate as Star Wars Land; it's set in some weird timeframe where alll the cool characters except Chewbacca are dead. Or maybe they haven't been born yet? I honestly can't keep it straight which came first in "the timeline", Princess Leia or the boring gal who wears the gauzy linen outfits. I far prefer Princess Leia. Whatever the reason, all the cool kids are missing on the Starcruiser. No Han Solo, no Luke, no Leia, no Obi Wan, no Darth Vader, not even Billy Dee Williams. I guess Yoda shows up in a hologram sometimes?

Layer that storyline issue with the fact that it was designed and developed solely under the executive leadership of Bob Chapek since 2016, and the cheapness and budget cuts are too noticeable to excuse. The CM uniforms, the decor, the lack of characters, the lack of kinetics, the smaller windows into space, the cheesy effects, the boring space terminal, etc., etc.

A year from now I honestly don't expect it to be operating as it is today, if it's even still open.

I'm spending my money on Ukrainian vodka. Well, okay, it was only 30 bucks, but tonight I bought the very last bottle of Ukrainian vodka left in OC and I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. I don't even drink vodka, but I'm too old to re-enlist and I had to do something! 🇺🇦

No for me. As I said in another thread, I'm not a big RPG person. This would just give me anxiety. lol... Some of the "quests" could be fun as standalone things in Galaxy's Edge (*cough* like we were PROMISED! *cough*), but there's no way I'd pay this price tag for any of that.

Also, I know others have complained about this, but this didn't feel Star Wars to me at all. If you subtract the Storm Troopers (and they aren't there the whole time), then it just feels vaguely Star Trek or generic Sci Fi.

To pickup on @TP2000 's thoughts about the timeline.... (Spoiler alert for those that haven't seen all the movies!)

The final battle between Kylo Ren and Rey was silly. All I could think was, "At some point, are you going to kiss and then Kylo dies?" It was just weird and anticlimactic. So much of a "I know how this story ends" feeling.

ETA: I'm not judging others that enjoy this kind of thing. You do you. Have fun. Geek out. It's just not for me.

I have no desire to see it, or participate in it. I'd consider myself a casual Star Wars fan, but I'm not the type to dress up or own a lightsaber.

That being said, I really like the concept of it. This is sort of a new realm in the world of themed entertainment that could absolutely be adopted to other themes/stories (lol but probably won't be). I remember the play testing they did way back in the day in Frontierland that was a runaway hit and had crowds of people really getting into it, and it was .... exciting. I think Knott's still does this too every year?

In a broader sense, it does feel like a real evolution of theme park experiences: to provide something personal and engaging in a way that theme park attractions cannot anymore. We've been so spoiled with big box e tickets that people now just line up hours for a 30 second ride and move on to the next one. Attaching this personal interactive experience to a hotel, and engaging guests for 2 days straight would be quite the accomplishment (if it works).

Of course it is too expensive, but that's probably more an expectation of demand than anything else.

I watched two 30 min videos on this, and honestly it looks really cool, like a role playing video game in real life. I wonder how linear vs how open it is, and how impactful your choices really are to the main story. Like can you side with the first order but be secretly spying and then sneak out to the resistance to leak some stuff, and will that then change the main story at all. Probably not. But it still looks really cool. I think a younger child/teen me would find this absolutely anxiety inducing, but adult me thinks it’s a super cool idea.

All that being said, the price tag is a turnoff lol.

I'm planning a WDW trip for this May but the Starcruiser is not on my list of things to see or do. I've seen videos and it looks like fun but not worth the price tag. It's clear that the interactive experiences that are aboard were what was originally promised for Galaxy's Edge but with a minimum $5k price tag. I'd rather DLR invest the money in more entertainment in Galaxy's Edge or a new ride.

Yeah, I think it's becoming glaringly obvious that they cut all the entertainment budgets from GE knowing that they were probably going to include it here instead. It's just disappointing on the whole.

I consider myself a casual SW fan, and have no earthly desire to spend that chunk of change to be locked into a two-day experience.
At the very least though, the price tag does cover the cost of admission into Hollywood Studios.

But are you a fan of the breakfast/ lunch buffet room that turns into the fancy dinner show at night by simply turning on the mood lighting?

It wouldn't have been a decision to move money from one bucket to another that would have the characters/entertainment cut from Galaxy's Edge. It wouldn't have mattered much where the money was coming from.

That they were able to create the characters anyway, points to the idea that there were operational difficulties with working those characters into the land, most likely due to demand. They expected Galaxy's Edge to be so busy, they never would have been able to provide the same experience to the mobs of people. If the droids and aliens and characters were walking around Galaxy's Edge, and people were stopping to get autographs and photographs, they would have blocked walkways and created a general mess in getting around.

This is somewhat backed up by the rumors that came out suggesting they were considering a separate gate admission for Galaxy's Edge.

For what it's worth, they had already spent millions doing the development work for the walk around droids that did eventually appear in Launch Bay.

You mean the basement at St. Michael's Lutheran Church they decorated for the church's annual SciFi Nite?

It's the main dining room. It's the only dining room. Not only that, it's where you have to go each night for the main entertainment and "dinner show".

In their defense, they dim the lights for the dinner show. But for breakfast and lunch, this is what it looks like. o_O
This is what I mean when I say Disney insults my wallet.

This doesn’t look like something I’d want to eat in after paying thousands of dollars for two nights.
