The water ways in Future World West are dry, with the exception of the one in front of Imagination. They have been this way no since at least the start of Flower and Garden Festival. There are no signs of any refurbishment taking place.

Anyone know anymore?

Seems they have been draining and re-filling, we were there over a week ago and the one nearest imagination was drained, went back last Tuesday afternoon and it was full again
Those are ponds that are filled separately from the river concept. It's mostly stagnant water and therefore, like an aquarium has to be periodically drained and cleaned to prevent algae build up and animal waste removal. They probably can tell when it is needed by seeing that even the ducks don't want to be in them anymore.

These were drained a few times over last summer as well. It makes you realize how much the waterways add to this area.

but you have to have water to grow it, direct harsh sunlight kills open-air algae
Sort of. Algae is after all a plant. It needs sunlight to live.

What can kill the algae on surfaces (aside from chemically killing it) like concrete is the removal of the water. A long sunny period with no rain will remove the water, but the same would happen in total darkness as well. Bathe it in sunlight, but keep adding water and it will grow like gang busters.

The problem is untreated concrete is like a sponge. A quick rain shower every week or so is all you need to keep it wet enough to keep algae alive and thriving. This is why it is a good idea to seal concrete after you clean it. Sealed concrete can not retain near the amount of water that unsealed will and algae growth can be reduced or eliminated.

We were told it was for cleaning/removing things that grow in the still water. Should be back soon. Please enjoy other Epcot water features.
