The concept wasn't even around back then.

Some general comments about the "updated" commercial...

As some of you know, the original commercial was aired only one time. Amazing, huh?

Good digital editing. I wonder if it was done on an Apple?

I haven't seen this commercial for awhile. I had to watch it three times before I noticed the iPod. I was too busy concentrating on the...uh, composition...yeah, that's it, the composition.:lookaroun

Actually no, it aired once in Idaho in a 30 second spot in order to be in contention for some commerical award thingy.

As for the iPod, to everyone their own, but I meet lots of girls with it, and I wouldn't trade mine for the world.

Actually yes, the original commercial was only aired once by Apple. All 60 seconds of it. As a paid commercial.

I am thinking it was a model with green screen and green suit with and iPod on and they layered the videos, either that or its a CG effect. There are a few ways it could have been done... I am sure it was done in FinalCut Pro on a Mac G5 running dual 2.0GHz processors.

It aired only ONCE..during halftime of the superbowl of 1984 (thus the appropriate influence from the book of the same title). 60 seconds of probobly the most misleading commercial in history..did anyone REALLY know what it was about? Prob not.

As for your 2nd comment...what type of girls you meeting who are interested in you cuz of your iPod? heh

Link.... http://www.isd.net/cmcalone/cine/1984.html

quote from book:

To this day, if you ask most Apple employees about the commercial, they will proudly claim that the only time Apple ever paid to run the commercial was during the Super Bowl. It's been repeated convincingly so many times by so many sincere people that it's now accepted as gospel. Hate to break it to you, but it's a lie.

In keeping with industry tradition, Chiat/Day paid $10 to run 1984 in the 1:00 A.M. sign-off slot on December 15, 1983, at a small television station (KMVT, Channel 11) in Twin Falls, Idaho, thereby ensuring that the commercial would qualify for that year's advertising awards. And beginning on January 17, the 30-second version of the commercial aired for weeks in ScreenVision, an advertising medium played in movie theaters before previews and feature presentations (some theater owners loved the commercial so much that they continued running it for months without pay).

The commercial aired for the Super Bowl on January 22, 1984. Check out the date in your quote. Oops! Credibility problem.

And by the way, you just violated the expressed statement not to violate the author's copyright by quoting from the book or excerpt. Oops!

The commerical was about IBM being big brother, what Steve Jobs failed to see was that IBM was not big brother, Microsoft was and Microsoft is who eventuly crippled them...

OOPS on me! Yeah, the dates make sense. Guess I'll have to start wearing my glasses or ditch my 19" and buy a 21".

However, I haven't seen anything saying that Apple has aired the full 60 second paid commercial on TV more than once. The excerpt doesn't clearly state whether the December 15 spot was the 60 or the 30. Even if it was the 60 that ran, it would still be safe to say that the commercial was aired only once during prime time (I know, I know, a fine distinction, but, what the hey).

I guess all this goes to show is how Apple perpetuates myths about the quality of what they do or with anything they have a hand in.

(ducks and covers from the one-button mice being thrown...:D )

LoL..quoted straight from "pirates of silicon valley"..

truth is that IBM WAS the big brother..microsoft was more like the sneaky thief (but then again..apple themselves stole it all from xerox in the first place)
