It's like people at the zoo. Last week a kid was throwing lays potato chips to the giraffes. Parents standing right there. Sign clearly posted not to feed
People are morons and think the rules don't apply to them. Not saying these parents specifically because I'm not sure if they knew what their kid was doing in a split second but if people just let their kid stand there and do what they know they shouldn't then that's bad. Actually at Hollywood Studios they let people feed the ducks all the time over in the water by the Primetime Cafe.

What often gets forgotten when something so horrible happens is that much of the Walt Disney World property is in it's fully natural state. That means it contains most of the same wildlife that can be found throughout Florida and gators are a part of that wildlife. They'e been there since long before WDW was created and there is no way for them not to be there.

As has been said above, this has never happened before at WDW and is extremely rare across FL. Despite how horrifying it is, it is simply not something that is very common and this is a horrible freak occurrence.

The feeding the wildlife thing is a constant issue. I've seen countless times when guests are feeding the birds while eating lunch and then totally freaking out when one of them lands on the table and flies off with their lunch. Those same guests are then demanding Disney replace their food that was 'stolen' by the animals they were just feeding. For everyone who complains about all the birds around the outdoor eating places, this is caused by all the guests who are feeding them. They are only there because there is food available to them and if that stopped, they'd go somewhere else.

As a parent of a 4 yr old and another on the way, I can't imagine the pain of losing a child so young and especially in that type of scenario. I really feel for that family.

I hope these comments don't come off as insensitive but I hope this serves as a reminder that we are not alone in this world. We do share a great bit of land with some dangerous predators. I think because we don't see or experience it we don't think about it and get complacent. Even As A Resort area, This Is natural habitat.
I don't know if the kid was playing in the water for an extended or just ran into it which can happen with little ones. I would prefer to hold off on any blame assignment until getting g all of the details but thst time of night in Florida near water is a time to be extra cautious.

My guess is elevated boardwalks with rock walls lining the beaches. We have that along the Great Lakes up here in MN. You'd have to try very hard to get to the water when you're in a city.

What about the private pools on the bungalows? Aren't those actually like "in" the Seven Seas Lagoon? Couldn't a gator even get in them or are they totally closed off with water generated from elsewhere?

They'll have to destroy ton sawyers island now. Good job.

Gators can also walk on land so basically you'd have to get rid of all pools and water rides not just the beaches and lakes to ensure 100% safety.

This photo is in Costa Rica that I took while walking down a street, but yes- Florida does have crocodiles as well. Just not as many.

The reason I'm sharing it is because even if you put a few rocks you can't expect that there will be 0 chance of another alligator getting to the edge.

I'm repeating myself- but I'm pleading with people to just take this for what it is- A rare horrible incident.

It's so scary because it makes us realize that we can never keep our children 100% safe. No matter what we do or where we are. But we can't use that as a reason to blame or "what if" "why" and what needs to be done to prevent it from happening to me? No one can prevent something like this. And we can't build walls and bubbles around every place that we go.

Yes it was in the water and there were No Swimming signs posted. People are mad that they didn't have signs warning of gators but when the sign says No Swimming then as long as you obey that you shouldn't have a problem with gators. I've heard the kid was in there about a foot deep. For a 2 year old that seems pretty deep. It's definitely deep enough to conceal a smaller type gator and especially under the cover of darkness. I'm not saying their parents will be charged with negligence but given the way things went down with the gorilla thing it could be a possibility when people get out for blood.
The kid was IN the water (any depth) at 9pm at night (dark) with a no swimming sign?

Sorry, but I blame the parents.

It was movie night at the GF and the parents had set up a little picnic area down by the water about 30ft from the bank and the dad had took the little boy down there to let him wade in the water. They said about a foot deep. The signs said No Swimming. I would love to know if there were other kids down there swimming too. I highly doubt it but who knows?

Ugh, I am staying at BLT in December and hate snakes. Maybe they will be hibernating by then?;)
LOL! Well not exactly but blacksnakes are completely harmless. I know that's small consolation when you're naturally scared of them but I don't think you have anything to worry about. We're members there and go 3 times a year and that's literally the first one I have ever seen there.

News has reached my town in Canada. It's also on the site of the Guardian in UK. It's going to be everywhere. I feel so bad for everybody involved in this horrible tragedy. It's really not a good week for the beautiful city of Orlando :(
