We are booking our next trip for September 2011, and I have read that since this is a lower time of attendance that often the dining plan is free. If true, when is that offered? The difference would be about $1k, so I don't want to book now and overpay. Thanks!

You can book now and IF they release it call and switch it. Free Dining WAS already offered for next year though. So who knows what they will do come April/May?

I was asking myself the exact same question a week or two ago. Then I learned the free dining had already been offered for those dates.
What I did is I booked with the current discounts (kids stay and play free or room discounts) that are offered until March 27, just to make sure, and if ever they announce free dining later I will call to have that discount instead.
The other discounts are far from being as good as the free dining, but it's way better than paying full price. Let's pray they give the 2011 free dining a second shot!!

It depends on the discount. Last year I stayed on cash (ran out of DVC points
) and booked at WL on a free dining bounceback just to hold the date.When %40 off passholder discounts were offered I switched to that.
Even if the DDP worked for me (which it tends not to) %40 off the room was still a better deal.

It also depends on the number of people on the dining plan. We will be 5, so it's a savings of over 1700$ (3 adults/2 kids for 11 nights). Since we will be staying at a moderate resort, the discount currently offered on the room is only a 600$ savings... so in our case we would really rather have the free dining!
Which is why I'm REALLY hoping they offer it in the spring for late summer stays! :slurp:

When Disney does offer the free dining for the Fall, it is usually offered in April, as stated above. I'm not so sure if they will offer it again, being that they already offered it for most of the year. You will just have to wqait and see.
As mentioned above, I say to book it at the best current promotion and then if other deals come along that are better, you can always switch.
