Fort Wilderness Cabins

Just wanted to know if anybody has ever stayed at the Fort Wilderness Cabins ? What is your take on these? I know they can fit 6 people and they have grills you can cook on. I am considering possibly taking my nephews with us to WDW and that would mean i would need space for six. It's a choice between getting two rooms or staying at a resort that accommodates large families. Also we already have reservations for one room at the Dolphin does anybody know if they have adjoining rooms if i decide to go with getting two rooms. Thanks for any help you could possibly give me.

Thanks,
Shybre

I have stayed at Ft Wilderness many times and it is my favorite overall place to stay. The scenery is beautiful, especially around Meadows Trading Post which is a store that also has some expensive grocery items, but has checker boards for the kids to play at, as well as rocking chairs outside, I remember being a little kid and as the rain came pouring down just sitting in those chairs under the overhang as it kinda felt like a comforting sauna. The shows are great and the kids love the movies at night. Also near Pioneer Hall there are free roaming peacocks and a petting zoo you can visit daily.

As for the cabins themselves they are basically three room, a main one with table and bed that comes down from the wall, with TV and a connecting kitchen that has a full size fridge. The bathroom is fairly standard, but then there is another roomin the back, with one large bed, and two bunk beds, that kids usually love. Also in this second room there is a second TV so if you have disagreements of what to watch, the kids can watch their own TV. The cabin is surrounded by cedar trees and is very quiet and calming, with a porch and a picnic table for you to have cookouts, that's why many have grocderies or try to buy them when staying here.

If I had two major suggestions it would be these. Because of the sheer size of the campgrounds and it's location it can be time consuming to get to the parks. Some even suggest using your own transportation. The way transportation works is you take a bus to one of two bus stops on the campgrounds and then from there you take a bus to one of the parks, or a boat ride to the magic kingdom. This can annoy people who don't know this. BUT there is something you can do to make better time, as welkl as move around the campgrounds quicker. You can rent a golf cart to drive around, as you'll see many people using tem, and the kids love them. These you can drive to either bus stop, either the beach area or the main gate area, park the carts there, and then just wait for the one bus or boat. Of all the resorts, none has as many activities as Ft. Wilderness, and it is kinda cool to go back and have your own building to yourself after going to the parks. If there were one negative it's transportation....BUT the golf cart helps greatly.

Also Ft Wilderness has a beach, practically every sport near by, pools, two stores, shows, a petting zoo etc. The horses that walk the carriages in the Magic Kingdom live at Ft. Wilderness and you can visit them when they aren't on the job. Also there is no food court like most disney resorts, so you might want to figure that in as well. Sorry if I went on for too long.......just thought this might help. I'll see if I can post some pics to better explain stuff ;)
I can't post attachments....for this I am sorry as I do have some nice pics of Ft. Wilderness.....it is one of my favorite places to be as I went there every Christmas. If you need or want to see the pics, just mention it and I'll try to e-mail them.

I stay at the cabins about two times a year. There are nice and will sleep six with no problem. The only negative thing is that there is only one bathroom. The cabins are stock with a full kitchen all you need is food. Full sized frig, stove and a microwave. They also have all the dishes and glassware. There are three pools, a campfire and sing a long, and a movie after the sing a long. Depending on how long you are staying and how much time you plain on being at the cabins you might want to look into renting a golf cart to get around the camp ground as there is no parking for cars at any of the pools, trading posts, or at trails end and Pioneer hall. There are Disney Buses that will take you to any of those locations plus the parks. The golf cart is a luxury. Hope this helps have fun.

I stayed at the cabins last month with my family of five. We like to eat in restaurants so we did not use the kitchen except for breakfast.

The cabin was good sized, and so quiet at night you'd never know you were on Disney. I loved being able to park literally steps from my room.

If we ever stay there again though I'll make sure we plan at least a couple of "non-park" days, and rent the golf cart for them. We missed out on most of the resort activities because we were just too focused on park time. We did eat breakfast in our room, but getting back and forth was so time consuming that we never came back for dinner or anything.

I think it's a great place to stay if you are there on a long, leisurely visit. If your going in "commando mode" I'd stay somewhere else.

I LOVE the Cabins. They are my absolute favorite place to stay on property. Fort Wilderness just has this atmosphere that is hard to find anywhere else. I love it.

I think you will too.

Is the second tv a sure thing? Or maybe just in some cabins. They aren't advertised as having two. It would be nice.

We stayed regularly at the cabins from 1982 until 1994. As a child, being from a big city, I especially loved staying at FW. Those trips were the first time I ever saw deers, armadillos, snakes, and rabbits, just roaming about wild. So I think your nephews will definitely enjoy the stay. However, a word of caution as others have noted the transportation system in these parks is the slowest of all resorts and the longest of all "commutes" to the parks. The cabins are not located in walking distance to the transportation hub over at Pioneer Hall, thus, you must depend on the internal bus system to get around the camp grounds. So prior to taking any bus or boat to your park of choice, you first need to grab a bus or tram to Pioneer Hall. Depending on your distance from Pioneer Hall it can add on to your travel time. As the years went on and Disney grew travel time and wait time seemed to grow which lead to our family switching to other resorts. My family always enjoyed taking afternoon breaks back at the resort so this became more difficult especially once the studios opened.

My suggestion is to use your car for all the parks with the exception of the MK. The boat ride to MK was always pleasant and rather quick. Epcot on the other hand unless things have changed was the longest commute as it consisted of 3 "legs", i.e. the internal bus system, a bus to the TTC , and monorail or bus to Epcot.

They are great. I stayed in them with my family all the time when I was younger (10-15 years ago) when they weren't cabins just trailers. I recently stayed in the updated cabins and they were very similar to what I remembered in the past.
Like everyone says there are 3 rooms, kitchen/living room/bedroom and a bathroom. The bedroom has a double bed as well as a bunk bed, and there is a pull down murphy bed in the living room. My parents always liked it because they could sleep in the living room and we could be in the bedroom without bothering them. The deck is great, and some of my fondest memories are coming home late at night and walking through the woods to our little cabin after going to the parks.
only problem is with transportaion. if im not mistaken you couldnt take cars down to where the petting farm/restaurants/activities were (by the lake) and had to use the bus system. other than that it is a great place to stay

Oh and there are two tv's one in the living room one in the bedroom. theres this cool plaid carpeting in the bedroom as well that made me quite envious. oh and dont miss the lawnmower tree.
