Fort Wilderness Cabin

My family is planning a large Christmas get together in WDW. We were thinking about a cabin in Fort Wilderness so we could stay together. Has anyone stayed in the cabins and would like to comment on them?

There have been some recent discussions about them. They always seemed kind of expensive to me for what you get. *shrugs*

Anyway here is a link to some threads, scroll down past the first few as they really aren't much help, just a mention of them.

How many people are in your family?

I have made two weekend stays in the Fort Wilderness cabins. They are not as luxurious as any resort room would be, but have a nice cozy feel all the same. They have a refrigerator, microwave, pantry, television, etc. Also, there is a grill outside. One drawback is the cabins have only one bathroom. That can be a pain some times.

The cabins can sleep 6-7 comfortably. You have a bed that sleeps 2 (can't remember for the life of me what it's called- king, queen, whatever  ), a bunkbed, and a Murphy's bed (pulls out of the wall). You could also sleep one on the couch.

One thing I enjoy about staying in the cabins is the heated pools walking distance aways. They may not mean much to those that have heated pools, but if you don't, it's a luxury!

You should probably try and make a reservation soon if you're going to go.

I would reccomend the cabins for a nice, relaxed Christmas.

We stayed there our first trip to WDW, 6 of us. There is a complete kitchen, including stove and dishwasher, which was important to us since my wife is diabetic and needs to eat at certain times. Also, there are comfort stations near each loop, ours was only one cabin over. These had washers and dryers, showers, and toilets. It was a good alternative.

The other benefit was that it was like we were alone without the noise you sometimes get from the adjoining rooms. Another benefit was daily maid service, she even cleaned up the kitchen.

I haven't stayed in a cabin, but they sound perfect for Christmastime. Bring some lights and a tree and it'll be like home. I would like to do this someday. Maybe after we have a whole bunch of kids. :)

We stayed in the cabins last year and I liked them. The biggest issue was the lack of storage space for clothing. There is one tiny nigtstand with 3 drawers and a very small closet ot hang things--not nearly enough space for 6 people. The area is also very large and you cant really get around by walking, you have to take an internal bus where ever you want to go and that is kind of a pain. I also thought they were a bit pricey. We find it cheaper and a little better to get 2 rooms at a moderate/value hotel--plus this was you get 2 bathrooms which is always a plus;)

Dont know if you are taking kids with you, but they do not have a themed pool with a slide, either. Just basic pools (which are great for cooling off). The campfire sing a long is a lot of fun.

Actually, it really depends on the location of your cabin. If you are right next to the pool, it's not that far of a walk. Plus, you can walk everywhere if you want. You don't have to take a bus. When I went, I walked most of the time. Yes, they were long walks, but it was good exercise, and it felt good to be out.

That is true--we were right next to one of the pools. As for walking other places, it was knowing where to go! We couldnt find any trails or anything and didnt feel it was safe walking along the 'main' road. I love walking around the other resorts like Carribbean Beach & PO it just didnt seem like Fort Wilderness was that walker friendly:wave:

We love the cabins, especially when travelling with a larger group. The separate bedroom allows for some privacy, different bedtimes, etc. The only drawback is the single bathroom, as others have noted. Being out in the woods, it's also a bit buggier than the typical Disney resort - most Floridians are used to this, but others may be taken aback. I also love the secluded feeling of the resort, even though the cabins are fairly close together (although my wife still insists that at night there is a Friday the 13th feel to the area - still waiting for Jason to come out of the darkness ).

A little more info of why I was looking into the cabin. Me and my family are looking into a Christmas get away. It would be 6-8 adults, no children. We're looking for an economical way to stay on property and a way we can all be together. Is there a better way to do this than the cabins?

To be honest, I think you would do better with some connecting or even adjoining rooms in a Moderate or Value resort. The Deluxes are nice if you can afford them...our favorite being the WL, which I hear is beautiful at Christmas. The cabins cost more than some rooms at the WL.

That way you have privacy if you want it (doors between connecting rooms can be closed and locked) and there will be enough bathrooms to go around.

Whatever you decide I'm sure you will have a great trip. WDW at Christmas time is an ambition of mine.

Do you happen to have any information about any upgrades being done to the FW pools? Seems that all the other resorts have very nice themed pools & FW has not renovated in a while.

I have not heard of any renovation plans. The pools still have a nice relaxing feel though.

With 6-8 adults, I'd say get 2 cabins.

The cabins are kind of expensive, But when a whole bunch of us went down, we definitely got our moneys worth. especially because we brought down a bunch of groceries and we cooked out on the grill and had breakfast in the cabin, we ended up bringing 2 suitcases of food (we were there for 11 days) and what we paid extra for the cabin, we made up for with money saved in food. it is also very relaxing and private. if you plan on spending lots of time at the campground then it is worth it, but if you plan on being in the parks all day long, i would suggest a regular resort.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the cabins! But we have young children (so the seperate bedroom is nice) and we like to cook most of our meals (making the full kitchen a must). Sounds like that isn't true for your group, so you may want to consider 2 hotel rooms (not very practical for a family like ours). The cabins are praicey, but with our discount and $$ saved on meals, it works out great. Have a great trip!

The cabins only sleep 6. You may want to try to get a 2 bedroom villa at one of the DVC properties like Old Key West(one of the cheaper ones), Wilderness Lodge Villas, The Beach Club Villas, the Boardwalk Villas or Saratoga Springs.

If you need help in making the arrangements in order to make your holidays special, please feel free to contact me.
