for the sinus and allergy sufferers

Here's a question for all you allergy and sinus sufferers. for the past 2 years, starting in the spring and ending around the start of fall, I've been suffering from killer sinus problems. I wake up everyday with a sore face and a killer headache. I've tried everything imaginable, been put on different medicines but nothing seems to help. What do you take to ease your sinus pressure and allergy symptoms? In my junior year of high school, I went to the emergency room around 1 in the morning because the pressure was so bad I couldn't see straight. They said I was suffering from migranes so they put me on caffeine pills (oh joy what fun...interesting stories). I was still in pain and was running around like I was high or something ( I was..on caffeine). I wasn't feeling good at school but the nurse wouldn't let me go home because she said I was bouncin off the walls so I cussed her out. My teacher thought it was funny because I went back to class and told her about it lol. I finally diagnosed myself as having sinus and allergy problems and my reg. doctor backed me up on it but we cannot find anything that completely gets rid of the problem, just eases the symptoms by half which isn't good enough.. what are your suggestions?!

Do you have an air conditioner? If so run it...it filters out the pollens. How about your pets? Are they in your room at night?...you may have to change that.

Have you been tested for allergies or did your doctor just say "you have allergies"? Sometimes an infection is very hard to get rid of; a course of antibiotics over a month or more may be needed. Polyps could also be a problem.(small growths of tissues) A trip to an allergist may be in order.

I find that my sinuses and ears get very stufy if I consume a large amount of sugar...my body just can't handle it.

A cold sinus mask may help reduce the swelling. Good luck!

Suggestions... prescription only...

something with 0,02% benzalkoniumchloride and 0,25% Fenylethylalcohol
Flexonose or something... I used it...
Now I'm getting these pollen injections again... and they really work (thank God).

perhaps mold is the problem... I get alergy attacks, (coughing, runny nose) in my school when in the math hallway and english hallway....

just not in the band room...

(I also get attacks at home, even worse when i have a bad cold from school... Mold got into the back purtch and slightly in the aircondtioner...)

Rx meds, weekly injections, air conditioning, and a Hepa air filter in the bedroom. My newest symptom is that my eyes, which used to water occassionally, now flow almost all day long ! I definitely reccommend getting tested so you know what your worst triggers are. For what its worth, you are joined in your suffering by millions of us out there !

You poor thing!! I know how you feel! I hate to tell you this, but you are living in one of the worst allergy areas in the country. One thing that helped my daughter and me was to get one of the expensive filters for your AC....not one of the cheap little disposable ones. They make them now for allergens. Also, as rosebud's mom suggested, get a good hepa filter for your house (you may need a couple). They work wonders! Have you tried Flonase? That is the only thing that comes close to helping me, but it gives me nose bleeds and a sore throat.

A common side effect. Try saline nose spray during the day, but not right afterward (or you'll wash it away). Hard sugarless candies work wonders for the sore throat & won't leave too many calories behind. :animwink:

you could see if your house is more airtight... cause i know in many older homes their are holes and pollin can get in alot easier through those...

I use flonase and when it gets really bad I also use 24 hour sudafed, only 24 hour sudafed works for me and then it does not work for 24 hours, only works for about 8 hours.

Is Flonase the one that smells like roses ? Several years ago my dr tried a nasal spray on me, and it had this really strong rose scent. I sneezed every time I tried to use it ! I'm also in a REALLY bad area for allergies. Ohio, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania come together and touch right at the Ohio River. That tiny spot where all 3 touch is where I live. Around here in the early spring and late fall - pollen and mold seasons - there are so many people with sinus infections that they call it "Ohio Valley Syndrome ". You should also get the Hepa filters for your furnace also.

Ask your doctor if you can be tested for allergies. An allergist can then prescribe drugs for you to combat your symptoms and/or allergies.

Allergies also come in two forms: rhinitis and non-rhinitis. My wife gets horrible headaches from smells--lotions, colognes, cigarette smoke, etc. Anything with a strong scent pushes her over the edge. This in non-rhinitis allergies--they can't be treated. Her other allergies are dust, mold, and cat dander. Well, show me where in this world you can live with dust and mold.

Good luck in your quest to get relief!

From about the age of 17-30, I was in my ENT's office with spring and fall allergic rhinitis/ or a bad case of sinusitis. One feels really bad when they request a shot! Louisiana is a terrible place for allergy/sinus problems as there is mold, ragweed, pollen, etc. I wipe everything down in vinegar. It seems to repel the dust better and while I love the smell of clean smelling chemicals; this is better for us. I also wipe my bathrooms, and doorknobs, light switches down with old fashion Lysol. This also seems not to irritate the sinus/allergy attacks.
If dust is a big problem for you; look around at your home. When I go into an apartment to clean, after the resident has moved out, here's what I see is often overlooked in housecleaning:
Blinds! ceiling fans (people never turn them off to see all the dust bunnies)
also: bathrooms tend to be very dusty. and folks forget to change their air filters.
Can we say Achoo?

My sinus/allergy problem was so bad this summer that I developed vertigo as a result. My doctor put me on Flonase and Entex. They both help. My vertigo has gone away but I still have a Rx to ease the dizziness if it ever pops up again.

For those of you who suffer from a sore throat from the Flonase, my doctor suggested that I rinse my mouth out with water after using it. This does help.
