Food in Attraction Lines?

General Rule of Thumb Across Walt Disney World
  • No eating, drinking, smoking, flash photography, external video lightning, or cell phone use while experiencing any attraction. You must also remain seated with your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside and supervise children at all times. Those under the age of 7 should be accompanied, typically in the same ride vehicle, as someone 14 or older. No lap sitting is permitted. Shoes & shirt must be worn at all times.
  • When it comes to queues, if you are entering a building all food & drink must be finished upon entering. This means you must finish or throw it out prior to entering the building. If the queue is outside, typically you can eat and drink, but they still must be finished (finished or tossed) prior to boarding the attraction. This also technically includes cups of ice or water.
  • If the item a bottle with a screw on cap, a food item that can be packed away, or a food item in a souvenir container (resort mugs, LeFou's brew, popcorn buckets), these items can enter indoor attraction queues and onto attractions as long as they are packed away, not being consumed, and not at risk of being spilled. Other items like lollipops should be handled carefully or packed away.
  • Items cannot be set down some place unattended to be retrieved later, as Disney and it's Cast Members are not responsible if they are tossed or tampered with even if a CM offers to watch it.
All that said, there are exceptions. Some attractions like the Studio Backlot Tour permits it while others with outdoor queues are strictly against it. Some indoor attractions allow you to while others do not.

Most of these rules are custodial and the courtesy of others. There are fewer trashcans, less opportunity to get into a queue to clean, and even worse if there is a spill, it could hinder the efficiency of that attraction resulting in longer wait times and even downtimes. For an example, imagine dropping your ice cream on the moving belt at the Haunted Mansion. They would have to stop the ride and wait to have it cleaned leaving everyone stuck so that it won't get into the machinery of the moving belt. Imagine someone spills their soda on a fabric seat inside of The American Adventure and because there are so many seats someone sits down on a wet one unexpectedly. Imagine someone is chowing down on some popcorn while riding the Peoplemover they start choking toward the begining of their 10 minute long trip.

There is a reason for everything. So in general, plan to finish your food & drinks before entering any queue or attraction. Even if the wait is long or the attraction is a scenic tour or long show, don't expect to just be able to "finish it in line" or "throw it away inside". Of course, people break rules all the time. They sneak stuff in, they don't pack things away, and they do make a mess in the queues and on rides, but you can't say that Disney didn't try to do anything to prevent it.

A CM asked me to throw away my popcorn before entering Toy Story. That's the only time I was asked to dispose of food before entering a line..
