Trip Report Food and Rain Festival, Polynesian, 5th Anniversary!

Thanks to fall break, I got my photos edited and uploaded already. Yay!

Cast: Me and my husband, R
Where: Polynesian DVC villa (rental)
When: Oct 4-10
Why: 5th wedding anniversary

When we were planning this trip, I was unable to find any decent rates for our flight down on the 5th. I ended up finding a late Delta flight on the 4th that would get us there after midnight. It was around $70 as opposed to the ~$250 Southwest flights I was finding. I figured I wouldn't be able to add a night at the Poly, and frankly, I wouldn't want to pay that much for a room we didn't need until the wee hours of the morning. So I booked a room at All-Star Sports with some Disney rewards points. Score!

Ok now on to the trip. I left work a couple of hours early, took Chipper to his sitter's house and got home to get all the bags ready. R got home a little earlier than planned, and we were able to leave the house a little before 4pm.

We got to the Memphis airport in great time. I don't have TSA pre-check, and they sent me through a line where they were training someone. It. took. forever. I already get super anxious during the security check, and additional waiting makes it worse. Once I'm through and I KNOW I'm at my gate, I'm fine. But enough about my issues...

We had a plane change in Atlanta. Not a long layover. They were already starting to board when we got there. Atlanta had this cool art installation that reminded me of Pandora.

We got to Orlando before 12:30 and headed to claim our bag. It was weird seeing MCO completely empty.

Our bag came out almost immediately, so we grabbed it and made our way to the busses. We were headed to All-Star Sports at about ten till 1. Me = sleepy and cranky. Slanky? (not creepy...:joyfull:). Unfortunately it hit me that we never got a room text, which meant we'd have to stop at the desk. ARGH.

We were the 3rd drop off and got off the bus at 1:40. There was only one person at the desk, and the two people in front of us seemed to be taking forever. It was about 15 minutes before a second person finally came out and we got our room number in less than a minute. Would have been nice to have just GOTTEN A TEXT. I guess maybe when I did online checkin I put that we'd be there late? I don't understand why that would make them not text us though.

Whatever. We got to sleep about 2:15am and I was OUT.

Sorry this is so text heavy. One more story, then I promise I'll do more pictures.

At 6am the freaking in-room alarm goes off. :arghh: I turned it off (I thought)
At 6:10am the freaking in-room alarm goes off :arghh:. I unplugged it
At 6:20am the freaking in-room alarm goes off :arghh::devilish:. I briefly considered throwing it off the balcony, but R took it from me and started trying to figure it out. You needed a screwdriver to get to the batteries, but he figured out how to actually turn it off. Thankfully that worked.

We fell back asleep and didn't get up until 9. After we were up and moving, I took some pictures. Apologies for the slept-in beds (we sleep in a king bed at home, so in these doubles, we split up...no shame)

Donald :inlove: I liked the room instantly because of this.

I thought the headboards were cool.

Honestly, I liked this room better than our Pop room last spring! I would totally stay here again. I think I'd request being closer to the main building. We were about as far as you could get in the baseball section. It didn't matter for us, but for a longer stay it would.

I headed out to get coffee and look for a rain jacket for R (we forgot to get one for him before). Sorry all iphone pictures...I forgot my camera. *Edited to add - after reviewing this post, I realize I took the room pictures AFTER getting coffee. Oops. Bad note taking.

It was raining steadily. It was a light rain, but heavy enough that I needed my jacket on with the hood up.

No luck with the jacket. I headed back to the room with only my $3 coffee. :cautious::hilarious:

We finished getting ready, packed back up and called at Lyft at 10. Jose took us over to the Poly. We had a great conversation! Unfortunately, this was the most expensive Lyft I've had, and it wasn't even that long. Ugh. No idea why there was surge pricing at 10am on a Friday. Whatever.

We walked into the Poly at about 10:30 and our room text came in! I couldn't believe it!

I love this lobby so much and it smells soooooooo good :inlove::inlove::inlove: What I wouldn't give to smell it right now.

We were in Moorea, so we headed there. I knew it would be on the far end, so we headed that way and when we ran across a map, we charted our course.

Well I just spent the last week doing practically nothing, and I figured I should hop back in here to update this report! I will be back in 19 days, so I'm running out of time :jawdrop:

Back to the Halloween party

We dressed at young Carl and Ellie from Up. I loved our costumes! We actually saw another couple dressed the same, except they had the balloon. But our aviator hats were better :joyfull: We got lots of compliments! Even had some cast members give us candy because they liked our costumes.

During the party, we mainly enjoy the entertainment, but we did make it on some rides, and I had one treat I REALLY wanted for some reason.

Candy corn ice cream! It was soooooo sweet, but I really enjoyed it.

We hopped on the Peoplemover next

The sky was really showing out!

I mean, what a GORGEOUS night!! I could tell we were going to have fun.

We headed toward Frontierland next.

Of course we had to ride Haunted Mansion! Love the atmosphere there during the party. We JUST missed the performers when we got off the ride. We were going to watch, but she was going on a break, so we didn't stick around.

Spooky!!!

R gets frustrated taking pictures, but I just decided to let him complain and get the pictures I wanted anyway...I paid for this party, dangit, I want these special magic shots!

Another one from the magic shot at HM. There was a cast member acting like she was scaring us off to the side. It was cute.

This was the shot I wanted most!!!

I don't know if there's a directory that shows where all the magic shots are, but I couldn't find one. I was just happy to stumble upon the hitchhiking ghosts because I wanted that one so bad!

I'm pretty sure we rode some things, but I didn't take pictures, so I'm not sure what we rode.

We walked over to Main Street next and got a treat at Starbucks, the pumpkin cheesecake dome. It was quite good! I would definitely recommend it if it's back next year.

We watched the parade while we ate the cheesecake. I got some shots, but I was definitely planning to get better pictures during the second parade. I gotta have a good view!

We just stood in the middle of the hub for my absolute favorite nighttime spectacular: Hallowishes!

I LOVE IT SOOOO MUCH!!! :inlove: This is the main reason I like going to MNSSHP. I wish I could watch Hallowishes all the time, but alas, I only get to once a year. Youtube works in the meantime.

After Hallowishes, I think we rode the Little Mermaid ride (I can never remember the actual name of it...Under the Sea?) and saw another magic shot over there. I also ran across Donald and couldn't convince R to stand in line for him. I still regret it. I should have just done it by myself

This was cool! A cast member walks behind you with a light thing to make the skeletons during a long exposure. It was neat!

We walked back toward Main Street and stood in front of the castle for the parade. There were people in front of us that I just knew would stand up when it started, but thankfully they didn't! We had an amazing view.

Cleanup cast member for the horse :hilarious: Everyone was cheering for him.

Ok I have a LOT of photos from the parade, so just get ready for it...

I don't remember these dancers from past parties, but I love them! I doubt they're new, I just never noticed how fun they were.

One of my favorite villians! Had trouble getting a picture of him because they cut the lights so much.

Ok, that was it :D Sorry guys! Up next is just as many if not more pictures of the Hocus Pocus Villian Spelltacular. The main reason I wanted to watch the parade from in front of the castle was so we could just turn around and be right there for the stage show.

So when we got up to the stage, there were these two girls up there that watched the parade from back there. One of them pretty much never said a word, but the other talked CONSTANTLY. And she was super annoying. I would guess she was in high school. You know how sometimes kids that age just...talk about really stupid stuff? And she was bragging about how obsessed she was with this stage show. Not sure why that's something to brag about, but ok. It was just weird, but thankfully, I was in a good enough mood that I powered through her chattering.

I was pumped to see the show!

The performers are SO GOOD!

These ladies are just so stinking talented.

Clearly I'm a fan of Dr. Facilier

I filled up my memory card during this show  Rookie mistake! I went back and deleted some, and only got one or two shots of each villian. So annoying!

Hades looks SO MUCH BETTER this year.

Hook looks a lot better too.

The woman who is "friends with Winnie" used this photo on her Instagram, and it made me so happy! I love when the performers find my photos and like them :inlove:

After the show, the party was over, so we headed back to the Poly and crashed immediately. We were so tired!

Last day

We went to Epcot after we left our bags with bell services, and headed straight to World Showcase. They open some of the front booths early, so we hit up Mexico, then continued from there.

  • Rib Eye Taco: Marinated Rib Eye, Roasted Chipotle Sauce and Grilled Scallions on a Corn Tortilla — (GF) – $6.75

Can't for the life of me figure out what these two things are  I thought they were Italian, but they aren't...based on the menu I found.

Got this awful slushy thing in Morocco. It was like $10 and tasted like straight alcohol because it was barely mixed. Bleah :hungover:

Made it to the UK!

We got something at the Australia booth

  • Lamington: Yellow Cake Dipped in Chocolate and Shredded Coconut $3.25
Next was the Almond Orchard for something R had been wanting. I didn't think this sounded good at all...

  • Banana Almond Soft-serve Sundae with Fresh Berries and Crunchy Chocolate Oats – $4.50
I actually ended up liking it! I do think it was in the wrong kind of cup...it was bigger than the ones I've seen pictures of. Not going to complain about that!

Unfortunately after that we had to get a move-on back the the Poly to catch the Tragical Express.

Soaking in this beautiful resort :inlove:

Our driver was a tad late, and we had two stops after us. We got to the airport only about an hour and 45 minutes before our flight! I was freaking out because the security line looked long. Turns out, it was. It was about an hour long. I had to take my popcorn from Germany out to be swabbed, which is part of what took so long. They were making everyone take out ALL electronics bigger than a cell phone as well as any food item. It was quite chaotic. The whole ordeal made me go get pre-check as soon as I could. I used pre-check on my most recent flight and it was AMAZING. Game changer.

Well, that's it and that's all!

I hope you guys enjoyed the report. I haven't decided if I'll do one for January. I'll be there with my friend, and we're volunteering at Give Kids the World during the day. So park time will be less than normal...but I may still post some.

Hope you all have a happy new year!

I had a link to a list of the magic shot locations, will try to find it for you

EDIT:

I can't find my original link.. looks like the site where it resided took it down.

HOWEVER, Disney has an interactive map of all the photopass spots in each park at the bottom of this page. It does not specifically call out magic shots, but hope this helps.

I kept reading nightmare stories about the security line at MCO so I went ahead and got TSA pre-check. In fact, my husband and I just got our numbers this week :)

It is truly a nightmare. I don't fly a ton, but it's definitely one of the worst airports to fly out of. So excited to have pre-check next time! Although @Doc Disney mentioned in her report that it's possible to not get it on the boarding pass, even if you pay for it? So that's concerning...but I always fly southwest and get my boarding pass on my phone 24 hours ahead, so I guess at least I'd know ahead of time.
