Hi I am going to WDW in 22 days. Now I have gone many times before but this will be my 2nd time flying. For some reason I have this fear of flying and I cannot seem to get over it. I have gotten zanax from my doctor to take before we fly out but the fear keeps building up as the trip gets closer. Anyone who has any advice would be greatly appreciated. We fly out on Sept 21 and fly back Oct 1. It will be my husband and I and our 3 kids, 12, 6, 2. I do not want to look scared in front of the kids like I did last year. My oldest said it looked like I wanted to jump out of the plane during take off. We are flying Spirit and sitting by the wing. You can tell I am nervous look at the post I am rambling!! Thanks :hammer:

Giving up control of not just yourself but your family to a group of strangers is a very scary thing. The stats don't lie but that doesn't matter the fear is real. Please keep in mind that it is just a short part of a memorable time with your family and a great chance to teach your children about courage. On a more personal note I am one of those strangers, an eighteen year veteran air traffic controller in Jacksonville Center. I happen to work aircraft into and out of Orlando from the northeast every shift and in the hundreds of thousands of flights haven't been scared yet and I don't plan to be anytime soon. When you see the shear volume of flights day after day you get a real since of how RARE air disasters really are. Good Luck and have a GREAT time. (at least on the ground)

i have flown 82 times in my life, and i still get nervouse, im flying to wdw in 3 weeks. i actually drove by the providence airport tonight (i do that often before my trip, gets me pumped and ready to go). just going by and seeing how much security they have on the outside, nevermind the inside of the airport, really makes me feel safer than ever flying. even though i still get nervous, i do compare it to how many car accidents there are every day as oppose to plane accidents. i think the biggest fear of being on a plane is the subconscious feeling opf not being in control. when your in the car, you feel in control. but being 35,000 feet up and having someone else control the plane is kind of an unnatural feel. but what i do is i bring some books, and a mini photo album of my family and friends and if i get nervous i just look at them and laugh. i also bring all my wdw pamphlets and brochures and i think about in a few hours i can see mickey. and even sometimes when theres a bit of a turbulance, i close my eyes and imagine im on a disney ride hahah. whatever helps. but flying is a common fear, even for frequent flyers. you just have to keep your mind busy to take the thought off of flying.good luck and have a safe flight! just think of what you get to walk out to when you get off the plane... palm trees, mickey and magic !!!

Also, most commercial pilots have to have an enormous amount of flight time under their belt before they can go commercial. If every person who drove a car needed hundreds of hours of drive time before they got their liscense we would have alot less wrecks.

The really worst part of the flight are the takeoffs and landings. You can feel the tarmac as the plane rolls on it and the pressure put on you when it picks up speed. Once you're in the air, it is smooth unless there is turbulence.

I like sitting by the window to see things but if I was afraid I would sit in the middle or aisle. I also bring something to do. For my next trip, I'm bringing my Nintendo DS (hope that there is someone else on the plane with one and have the same games I'm bringing ), a couple books (Passporter and guides) and my MP3 player.

Just think of it as a car trip without the 18-wheelers blowing past you. :D

Hi there!
I was a flight instructor for several years. Here's the best advise that I can give you....it may cost a bit of time and money, but you will be soooooo verrrrry proud of yourself (and your family will be too). Go to your nearest small airport/airfield and take an introductory flight (about 20 minutes) in a small plane like a Cessna or Piper (2-4 seater). Tell them why you'd like to do it (to get over a fear), and they should be very accomodating. Your fear probably comes from a feeling of not being in control. So the instructor will allow you to "take the controls" for a bit. You'll be scared, exhilirated, feel safer and more in control and you will actually have fun and in the end be very proud of yourself! I can't tell you how many people I have done this with ... and it works every time. It gives instructors a great feeling too!
Just do it, okay???!!
Have a great time!

Have you ever took zanax before? I only ask as you may have some undesirable side effects. It could knock you out for the rest of the day and your first day in WDW could be ruined. I hate to fly too but nomally calm down once the plane levels off and the fasten seat belt sign goes off. I figure that I have survived by this point. Depending on the time of your flight you may just want to have a drink instead of messing around with the pills. Also remember it is such a short flight. I assume it is about the same as from Chicago, a little over 2 hours. By the time you level off, they bring around the beverage cart, bring you food (depending on the airline) it is almost time to land. Another idea if you dont have assigned seats already is to let your husband sit with the kids and you sit somewhere else. I know I dont panic as much sitting with strangers since I dont want to look like a freak, but if I am with my husband I tend to be a big baby. :)

Take your ipod - download some great Disney music & just think of checking into the resort in a couple of hours! You'd be amazed how much that helps - at least it helped me - we flew in on the 15th & out the 27th. Have a great trip!
