Just do not understand it. I have never flown before and going on SWA sight it says you can have 2 bags size 62" length wide depth. But does that mean like a box measures all sides and it cannot total more than 62 or is it just one time down one time wide and one time deep????? So confused... I understand they cannot be more than 50 pounds each. Also what is the carry on thing about 10 x 16 x 24. Does that mean deep no more than 10 front to back tall 16? and length 24. Is there more than one compartment for the both of us overhead or are there one for each seat to store them in? Thanks for any help on this silly question but never flown before I need to know and be ready for sure...

The 62 is the sum of l + w + h (not 2 of each)

The same is true for the carry-on dimensions (in any order)

On SW you just store your bags in the closest compartment to your seat, or under the seat in front of you if it fits.

You'll love flying, and SW is a very reliable airline. We fly with them often.

Limit or size limits. Like can I have several items that are liquid but just no more than 3 oz each. Like shampoo, liquid makeups, mouthwash etc. can we have say 4 shampoos just no bigger than 3 oz per bottle? Or just one of each? I do not want to have to buy things like that there. What about powdered items Like baby powder gotta have that after my bath, powdered laundry soap in baggies to size of load etc. I know this seems silly to ask but I be there are many out there lurking just afraid to ask these questions. So I am to understand you don't measure like a box....just once down once front to back and once width??? We get 2 of those bags each right So 4 for the two of us. I am just afraid that if I don't bring some of each type, winter verses summer then I will have to buy more and I shop Catherines if you know what I mean. Not huge just a bit on the plus size . Last year in Dec one day and one day only it got frigid and all I brought was one pair of capris and the maid threw them and 3 other pairs of shorts and a pair of paints away or so she says. Plus 4 shirts. I was stuck weraing the same 3 outfits after washing daily for the rest of our trip.

It doesn't matter what the liquids are. They just have to be less than 3.4 oz and all fit in one quart size ziploc bag. You can have one ziploc bag per person. It can be all shampoo if you want. The ziploc cannot be larger than one quart.
Powdered items are not liquid. Do not waste space in your ziploc by including them.
I do not know how long you are staying, but 4 suitcases seems excessive for 2 people.
You should look for a 29" suitcase. The dimensions are suitable for check-in luggage. It will be about 61" total, but the label will say 29". Buy one first and see how much you can fit into it. I fit enough for a month long trip there.
Get to the airport early. The overhead space is shared space and first come first serve.

It's actually a one QUART baggie, not one gallon...

Here is the TSA webpage with the rules for liquids in your carryon luggage:
http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

You get one 1-quart plastic baggie each. All of your carry-on liquids and gels must go in the baggie, and each container must be 3 oz. or smaller. A 6-oz tube of toothpaste that's half empty won't be accepted.

There are no restrictions on liquids in your checked luggage.

What I usually do is carry a small travel-size bottle contact solution, eye drops and deodorant in my carryon to get me through the travel day, and then put my regular supply of bodywash, shampoo, contact solution, mouthwash, etc in my checked suitcase. Look for the empty 3-oz bottles in the travel section of the store. Even though I put them in my suitcase, it's easier to fill those with shampoo and bodywash and only bring along what I need, rather than lugging along the full bottles (and the space and weight they add up)

A tip: any liquids in your checked bags should be sealed up into large-size ziplock bags. It's not a TSA or airline requirement, but it'll save many headaches if one of those containers leaks or breaks during the trip. Otherwise, you'll have a lot of laundry to do right when you get to your hotel.

For a weeklong trip, I only use one large suitcase and one backpack. In the cooler months I've been fine with using what I bring, but in the sweaty hot months I find that I need to do a single load of laundry halfway through my trip.

Almost everything goes in my suitcase. My backpack only contains the travel liquids I mentioned above, a change of shirt, travel documents, reading material, and most recently my netbook (it's like a laptop computer, but smaller and lighter). In the cooler months I'll also include a jacket or sweatshirt, and if it'll be rainy on travel day, I put my umbrella in my backpack rather than the suitcase. The backpack fits just fine under the seat in front of me, so I've never had to worry about the overhead bins.

With Southwest, you're allowed *two* checked bags for free per person. If you can get all your clothes into one suitcase, I'd stick to that and limit the hassle of two suitcases. Of course, I usually to deal with taking the subway to/from the airport, so two smaller suitcases would be a pain. If I were getting dropped off at the airport, though, I might think differently and pack more clothes.
What I usually do is pack a collapsible duffel bag into the front pocket of my suitcase. That way I can use it if I end up buying more souveniers than will fit in my suitcase.

If you're flying with someone, I'd suggest you each take a change (or two) of clothing and putting them in the other person's suitcase. That way if one of your bags is delayed by the airline, you still have a change of clothing in the other suitcase.

Lastly, if you pack two suitcases, are staying at a Disney hotel and using the DME luggage service on arrival, you'll have to call DME and request additional yellow luggage tags. The automatic mailing they send only gives you one tag per person.

Good Info rob562. So I get it. It cannot be a larger suitcase only one that says 29" no more???. We are parking at Love field but a shuttle comes and gets us from our parking area and will take us back over. So not much walking with it. But is it ok to put a quart baggie in each suitcase if we did take 4??? I knw that our room will give us shampoo daily but not more toothpaste etc. Good idea on an outfit of each others in our bags so that if something were to go wrong we would have something to wear on second day. If you do carry a carry on the same rules apply for the quart baggies and the size right? Thanks so much

Ok so I can have one quart bag in my carry on full... and another in my checked in suitcase right? Thats what I read on the site you gave me. But it looks as though I cannot have any aerosol cans of deoderant, or hair gels?? period anywhere. I have to bring the roll on type, that is worthless. Ok Ok... Should batteries in new packages be in the carry on so it won't weigh so much. I plan on bringing those 16 count AA for our cameras. Also I guess I need to buy a different case for the laptop and where do I put the cord for elec for it??? So many questions but I certainly do NOT want to hold up any lines for sure.

Okay it seems like there is a lot of confusion here.

You can carry as much liquid as you want in your CHECKED baggage. there is no limit whatsoever (containers can be any size and you can have as many as you like. They do not need to fit into a quart-sized ziplock)

Liquids in CARRY ON baggage is restricted to being in a max 3oz container and all must fit into one quart-sized clear ziplock bag.

So if you're checking some of your bags in then there really isn't a problem with taking liquids (as long as there in the checked bags!)

There are different rules if some of the liquid is medication i.e. insulin for diabetics. But from what I've read in this thread that seems to be irrelevant in your case.

Oh, and I've never had a problem with deoderant aerosols or hair gel being in the checked baggage.

Now I got it!!!! I just couldn't figure it out. But then when you load up on that stuff in your checked bag it will weigh a ton... The little bag will come in handy if the large bags were delayed etc. But no areosols right? Also the suitcase ban not be bigger than a 29" size to be within the 62" right? Thanks again

A 29" isn't necessarily within their guidelines. 29"x29"x6" for example is too large. or 29"x18"x18", also too large. But, a 36"x10"x6" does fit. You need to measure the bag in question and add up the dimensions.

Not to completely throw you for a loop, but I personally would recommend getting a carry on smaller than Southwest allows. For example, American only allows 45". 21x14x7 should work for most airlines.

So you only have to measure one side or width and depth not all the way around like UPS etc??? The carry on on their site said 24 x 16 x 10. so I have one that is smaller in length so will use that.. But the rolling bag just cannot understand it. There isn't a suitcase that is 6" deep is there???
