News Flights of Wonder closing and replaced by 'UP! A Great Bird Adventure'

Andrew C

You know what's funny?
I keep telling myself "it's only a preview show, it's only a preview show", but it is not good as is.

Flights of Wonder was an entertaining and educational show. I was mostly cringing watching this one.

I am hoping this new show will improve or get reworked.

I wonder how typical it is to make adjustments from findings during previews? I would imagine you have previous partly to work out all the kinks.

Great question. It is often third party show companies such as Natural Encounters creating them for many different parks and festivals.
A co-workers wife works at Bush Gardens as an animal trainer (previously at the local zoo before that the aquarium). When I raved about the Flights of Wonder show at AK she smiled and said she had worked with the third party company that puts on Flights of Wonder previously and they do great work (which was news to me that it would be handled by a third party but makes sense). This is obviously unofficial but that is the word from those in the industry.

In the video they are taking feedback, but how much can they really do? They may be able to tighten up some segments. There are bigger problems like mixing the mystic India setting and spiritual host with 2 silly cartoon characters. You can't fix that by Sunday.

Meh. I never cared much for the "story" of the show but I love the bird parts. I expect the same will be true with the new version.

Same, I could take or leave "Joe".

I haven't watched a video of the new show. I assume it's talking down to you as if you were five years old?

I think you can mix the two. Disney just has a habit of using characters to dumb things down so a five year old can grasp it.

My telling moment: when Dugg comes out saying "Find the birdie! Find the birdie!"

I spent the first 8 or so minutes of the show saying exactly the same thing.

And then Dugg says "Point!"

And I realized then that I, too, was searching for the point of this show.

But, to be fair, before I gave up at 15:02, I did enjoy watching the hornbill fly through the audience and catch the grapes.

Maybe they should put more birds in their "bird show." Just sayin'...

The story wasn't great per say, but the pacing was so much better. Plus, it is easier for a real person to interact with the birds than the foam heads. I think that made his inclusion feel more natural, unlike the UP characters.

Oh, it's dumbed down alright. Watch the video and then tell me if you think it was done well. It might be possible to do it, but it was not done in this show (at least not in the preview version).

I will. Not saying they mixed them well *right now.* Just saying they *could* have, IMO (and not that they can in a couple of days but who knows? Why do scripts for shows at WDW come off as so juvenile sometimes?). And I figured it was dumbed down. I know I pre-judged when I say you shouldn't, but when I saw Anika I said to myself this is the Disney Junior version of Flights of Wonder. She just seemed like the typical bubbly character that would appeal to a five year old. I take it I'm not far off. Will watch the video today.

They could have done this right. I was open to it. I'm prepared to be disappointed, which sucks. Because Animal Kingdom usually knocks it out of the park.
