Fish and chips @ Epcot

They have not been good in many years. Not ever since they quietly replaced the fish with tilapia. Tilapia is just nasty and when they introduced it to the US, they were marketing it as a cheaper alternative to catfish. It is a nasty bottom dweller and I don't know how anyone can eat it. So yeah, the fish and chips are horrible.
Reminds me of a place near Dallas that had taco Tuesdays and the special was 3 fish tacos for like $5 or whatever. Little did I know it was catfish. I was catfished in my fish n chips lol! It’s yuck

Yeah, I can't stand catfish either. I have a hyper sense of smell and taste so I taste things stronger and differently than most people. And I can't believe what some people eat and I know that if they tasted it like I do, then they would be grossed out.

Tilapia are like a fresh water Blue Fish…they are also known as cichlids (which I used to have in my aquarium)…have tried them several times, both wild and farm raised & prepared different ways…just don’t like them…(and I like all “white” fish species(flounder, fluke, cod, haddock, etc)

They are part of the cichlid family - which ranges far and wide from small aquarium fish to larger fish such as tilapia.

Tilapia are not the same as white fish. It is a matter of taste as to if you like it or not. I find tilapia to be OK. Nothing to write home about so to speak, but I will eat them just fine. Like most fish, they do tend to take on a flavor of what they have recently eaten.

My wife is like that too. Supertasters are a real thing - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super...is a person, having an elevated taste response.

My wife particularly does not like sweet foods. Many desserts are off putting to her because they are too sweet.

I also have a friend who has that cilantro tastes like soap gene.

I'm the opposite , I love catfish and several miles from WDW is the Catfish Place a local favorite in Kissimmee that serves fried catfish, gator, turtle , and other items in simple surroundings.

Tilapia are comprised of over a hundred species of fish all native to Africa. Everyone has taste preferences based on both thier enculturation and personal physiological responses to sensory inputs.

It's also a first world problem for preferences to override necessity.

There is a tremendous difference between fresh fish and frozen fish, I suspect what you are getting at WDW is frozen. If it is frozen the taste will be dependent on how long its been frozen, how long after it has been caught was it frozen, how it was thawed prior to cooking. The fat (oil) in fish oxidizes the longer it is frozen and gives fish a very fishy odor and taste. I have had the fish and chips (2019) at EPCOT and it was very good.

If wanting fresh fish delivered daily , check out Flying Fish at the Boardwalk.

In Feb 2024 we booked the firework package at Rose and Crown. All 3 of us got the exact same thing....fish and chips, and all of us said it was the worse fish we have every eaten. No one finished it. We noticed this at other tables too. I asked the waitress what kind of fish it was as it was clearly not Cod we were expecting. She said they use Hake now. She didnt say when things changed but the fish is now Hake and IMO ill never eat there again.

Hake is in the same family as cod and has a similar texture and taste. I suspect what you got was frozen and old --as
I posted oils in fish degrade and give fish a bad taste.

Hake still isn’t as bad as Tilapia
