Well guys... I caught my house on fire today. I thought I was making some Mrs. T's perogies and I ended up frying up the coffee pot which was sitting on the stove. I accidently turned on the wrong burner.:hammer: That was the most scariest moment of my life so far. The more I'd try to get it out.. the bigger the flames would get.

At this point- I would like to thank my foods teacher from last year Mrs.Higgins because... well she taught me how to put a fire out.

But alas, everything is good. The stove is not damaged, and the only part destroyed was the coffee pot. No one is mad at me... :)

Ill just use the microwave from now on. haha

PS.. another hint... dont use apple cider vinegar when trying to put out a fire... :hammer:

That reminds me of jr. high home ec class... I was making pancakes and they, well... spontaneously combusted, in my opinion. I was put on dish duty for the next few lessons

back to the topic at hand...mom caught some grease on fire that was on the stove once. thankfully the fire put itself out somehow. it was friggin scary though! that's when dad told us that if we ever have a fire like that to put it out with baking soda.

speaking of scary moments...so far, my scariest moment (that is, a mistake that i've made myself) was when i drove off my driveway a few weeks ago. my driveway is kind of elevated, so there's a good 4 1/2 - 5 foot drop on one side, and a fairly gentle slope on the other. of course, i took the drop off. i was going a bit too fast, and looked down to turn on a bit of heat and when i looked back up, i was going off the driveway. if i had stayed calm, i could've stopped and backed up, and i probably would've been ok. but i paniced and kept going while trying to get back on the driveway, which of course didn't work. i eventually came to a point where the car wouldn't go anywhere and my wheels were spinning and smoking. i immediately turned off the car and got out, ran to the house, and breathlessly woke up mom and dad. of course, it was 3:45 am, so that scared me a little bit more cause i couldn't tell what kind of damage i had done to my car. my parents went down the driveway to take care of the problem...dad got the car to where it could drive off into the field beside it and back up to the house....thankfully nothing was wrong with it, but i did almost flip it! which would be really embarrasing to flip my car in my own driveway....and being the first one to do this the entire 18 years we've lived here doesn't help matters :) i kinda laugh about it now, but it was terrifing at the time. the whole time it was happening, i felt as if i were in a bad dream. it was horrible! of course, that has nothing to do with fire, except that i was afraid i was going to catch my car on fire.

but i'm really glad nothing terribly bad happened in your situation, monorail!

Glad to see you are ok Monorail.

My sister once caught our kitchen on fire.

She was I think 7 or 8 at the time. I was home from high school taking a nap when this happened. Diana, my baby sis, wanted some toast and figured it would save time if she buttered the bread first before putting it in the toaster.

Well, butter being the way it is and gravity being the way IT is acted together with the heat from the toaster and pooled at the bottom of the unit rapidly gaining energy from the heat until -- well you know.

Normally a small taoster fire is not a big thing, simply unplug it and it will go out by itself -- that is, unless a panicky 8 year old girl afraid of getting in trouble is thrown into the mix.

Diana did think fast, and this was probably her downfall, she grabbed a towel to try and smother the fire... by FANNING it.

Needless to say what was a small fire turned into a rather largish fire, which began heating up the cabinetry above it which ignited.

Diana, noting how fast thinking was not so good the last time she tried, decided to change her strategy to one of slow thinking. This was not good because as she was deciding what to do next the fire had spread from the bottom of the cabinet to the sides where a bulletin board with bills, letter mail and various other papers were tacked (which seemed to greet the fire most accomodatingly).

It was at THIS point Diana decided maybe it was a good idea to wake her brother for help (me).

She told me the toaster was on fire. So I got up and went to the kitchen. She didn't tell me that the cabinet and mail and bulletin board and pretty soon the entire KITCHEN was on fire.

I was able to put out the fire and had minor blisters on my hands.. but man... your story just brought back that memory.

My mom did a great one once - she had a lamp that clipped onto the headboard of her bed and had accidentally pushed a pillow into contact with the bulb and whoooomph! I can still see her running to the bathroom with a flaming pillow ahead of her

University has been great for cooking fires, I have personally put out two flaming fat in grill pan fires and stopped loads of others from happening (mainly unattended food in ovens/grills that was beginning to smoke) but there was one fire that even made the local newspaper:

Students evacuated after pie catches fire
AN overdone pie sparked the mass evacuation of a University of Hertfordshire halls of residence in the early hours of Tuesday, October 15.

Firefighters were called to Roehyde Hall in College Lane, Hatfield, a little before 12.30am after smoke alarms detected thick smoke pouring from a student kitchen.

Hatfield firefighters quickly removed the offending pie and used a ventilation system to clear the downstairs area, which had become heavily smoke-logged.

There was little fire damage to the building and students were allowed to return to the rooms within an hour.

This one time (at band camp) I was in my kitchen and I threw a washcloth on the stove while it was going, and walked away, next thing I knew, my mom walked downstairs and said, "Kevin! This washcloth's burning!" and she put it out.
It was cool, huh huh huh uh.
